Talking about hats………….light/heavy hearted depending upon how you look at it!

Family photograph albums show me wearing a wide range of hats. Sunbonnets that had a distinct milkmaid look; berets to co-ordinate with winter coats, GiGi hats, Russian Cossack, cartwheel, fascinator, you name it, I’ve worn it, so why can’t I now?

If I venture through the door in a hat, my husband compliments me (though he must know I look ridiculous) children snigger, grandchildren, look away and roll their eyes. I can’t work out whether it’s my face ( to be fair I tend to avoid mirrors nowadays). My hair? quite a nice silver colour, but nothing special. The shape of my head? But surely that can’t change? Really worst of all is a bobble hat or beanie, honestly Bennie from Crossroads looks straight off the catwalk in comparison.

Honestly, it’s got to the point when I look round at other ladies and immediately imagine what they would look like in wedding hats and know that no matter how “homely” the face, they will certainly look better than I would.

Have any gransnetters noticed that items of clothing or headgear that they used to feel quite comfortable in (and I’m not talking miniskirts and hot pants) now look really weird? Maybe I will have to embrace eccentricity and wear a huge hat with an all encompassing face veil in future before I can venture out wearing any form of headgear………though come to think of it there is always a balaclava. I must rush off and perfect my eye-liner.

I ve never ever worn hats even at weddings I just don’t like them on me so I m no use to you at all
I don’t think hats are in so much are they apart from bobble/ beanie type none of my grandkids wear hats apart from them

MerylStreep Mon 23-Jan-23 19:27:35

The only hats I look half decent in are sun hats.
I was working in our charity shop last week and someone brought in 4 Fedoras. I was as sick as a parrot,

I don’t like myself in hats now either Lexisgranny Funnily enough I wore a woolly bobble hat for the first time in ages the other day as it was so cold when I took the dog out. I felt uncomfortable & looked ridiculous. To make matters worse I met an elderly acquaintance on my walk who looked me up and down as if I’d escaped from somewhere and chuckled and said are you expecting a blizzard!! I think I’d just rather be cold!

For weddings I would go down the fascinator route now rather than a big hat but I don’t really like those either and would prefer to go without or remove it at the earliest opportunity. When I was young I looked fine in hats, I had several including a big floppy one in the 70’s that I wore to death. I get a similar reaction from my GC as you do, there’s some serious tittering going on.

Just a thought but I wonder if it’s because as we age our facial features can lose definition and our jaw line softens. I have noticed other people who are a similar age to me that don’t look too great in hats either but there are plenty of others who look effortlessly stylish. I don’t know what the answer is but I do know I have a draw full of different hats I’ve purchased over the years and none really suit me.

I can’t wear headbands now either, don’t get me started shock

I never wear a hat and never have done They don't suit me at all

Oreo Mon 23-Jan-23 19:46:10

I’ve worn a hat only twice for weddings, wouldn’t wear a fascinator tho as I think they look a bit odd clamped to an older head, but they look great on younger ones.
I wear a bobble hat for walks, they aren’t meant to look great in are they? Just to keep you warm.I have a furry hat which suits me when I go out with a nice coat on somewhere.I also have a couple of straw hats for Summer which look ok.At least I think they do!😁

I've always loved hats and currently sport a Baker boy style hat. I have a couple of bobble hats and beanies for this very cold weather. I'm looking forward to a summer wedding this year so that I can wear a 'proper posh hat.

Hetty58 Mon 23-Jan-23 20:18:53

I love hats too. I might look a little silly in them, maybe - but do I care?

Rosie51 Mon 23-Jan-23 20:30:42

I have a face that doesn't suit hats, hence I avoid them like the plague. School hats were compulsory, a navy blue one with an upturned brim (was it called a girls breton?) in winter and a straw boater in summer. Thankfully in the fourth year you could ditch the boater altogether and swap the winter hat for a beret, which folded easily and hid in your bag as soon as you were out of sight of any prefects grin

I love hats, I wear them all through the Summer to protect my face, head and neck. Used to feel really ridiculous at first, every time someone laughed I thought they were laughing at my hat 🤣 Once I got used to the feel of it on my head I just picked it up automatically when I went out. Even got Mr A to wear one - his head needs even more protection than mine. Beanies don't really suit me but I have some winter hats that are more square in shape (sort of like a short chimney pot) that are really warm.

Fleurpepper Mon 23-Jan-23 20:50:57

Rosie51, glad I am not the only one. Just hate hats with a vengeance!

hollysteers Mon 23-Jan-23 21:00:21

Love hats and they help hide bad hair days. Baker boy hats, fedoras, Russian style, love them all.
My star sign is Aries, which rules the head and apparently this is one of the traits (load of tosh 😁)

BlueBelle Mon 23-Jan-23 21:06:54

I always thought I was odd to hate all hats but I feel quite normal now Quite a lot of us don’t like and don’t wear hats Shall we form a group 😳😳

Fleurpepper Mon 23-Jan-23 21:14:31

Even in very cold weather, I shall wear a fleece lined headband, NOT a hat.

Hetty58 Mon 23-Jan-23 21:41:13

Rosie51, I remember those silly, scratchy, straw hats - and their demise. We all decided, in my year, when starting at that school, to 'lose' them.

A mass protest, much supported by me - and successful ! I lost my replacement hat asap too. They decorated the surrounding trees, en masse, at great heights - until they fell apart.

Lexisgranny Mon 23-Jan-23 22:18:20

Hurrah, it’s not just me, but respect to those who do justice to the titfer!

annodomini Mon 23-Jan-23 22:24:47

A beanie hat makes me look like a 'clootie dumpling' but I like my collection of sunhats, especially the wider brimmed ones. When we were teenagers, my sisters and I used to go to the millinery department of a large Edinburgh department store and try on a variety of hats, until we heard the words 'Can I help you?' Those were the days when you would never go to a wedding without a hat and a number of friends and cousins obliged by providing the occasions. I liked and continued to prefer the 'Breton' style with an up-turned brim.

My summer straw boater folded & fitted in my satchel after it had been flicked off by passing schoolboys often enough & run over by a bike into the bargain! Not the smart image the school was trying to project when worn though.Mine was the tattiest but it had some close rivals.
I love hats, my husband won't let me wear my favourite baker boy hat when out with him, as Jeremy Corbin wore one.

rubysong Mon 23-Jan-23 22:47:43

I love weddings with hats. My niece got married last year and I found a fabulous hat in a charity shop. I nearly missed it as it was in amongst a stack of others. It matched my outfit perfectly and is a good fit. £3.50!

Kalu Mon 23-Jan-23 23:00:05

I have always loved hats from matching coat and hat with a velvet trim and matching pantaloons, school breton, camel breton and matching camel coat as a child.
Breton hats and berets in the 80s. Occasionally a beanie but mostly berets again now. Straw hats in summer including a favourite panama. My mother was a hat lover too.
Friends and I also did the trying on a variety of hats in department stores, posing like film stars. 😄

HeavenLeigh Mon 23-Jan-23 23:02:39

Oh I love hats

nanna8 Mon 23-Jan-23 23:17:30

I wear hats when I go to the Red Hat meetings once a month but not so much otherwise. I should wear sun hats but I find them hot and uncomfortable and I have thick hair anyway. Having said that ,I had a sun cancer on my nose last year so I am very silly.

Wyllow3 Mon 23-Jan-23 23:31:37

Lightweight Sun hats can look pretty if you chose them well and I definitely need them outside in hot weather. Or a visor for walking in and keeping sun out of eyes and face skin.
Otherwise warm bobble hats for winter.

Never wore a hat otherwise, they feel funny perched on my head and you can't move your head around naturally.

GagaJo Mon 23-Jan-23 23:50:39

I loved hats and looked great in them when I was younger. I had a few. The last hat I bought, I got from the V&A, a great big, wide brimmed one that I wore for a wedding. It was fabulous. I guess I was about 45? Couldn't get away with it now, sadly.

Grannynannywanny Mon 23-Jan-23 23:59:42

I don’t own any hats and have never liked them. I hated them as a child as they just made me hot and itchy. I prefer a hooded jacket.
