For information purposes:

Microsoft has announced that users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be offered Windows 10 as a free upgrade. There will be a time limit of 1 year after the release date of Windows 10 release to accept the offer.

There has been no firm date given for the release of Windows 10 as far as I know but it is likely to be in the latter part of 2015.

How will they know who to offer it to? Those callers who offer to fix our "infected" Windows OS have no way of knowing that we have Windows.

I suppose we will have to go to the website and download it if we want it. It is not an automatic update.

I wish they would stop all the blooming "improvements". Each time they do an update, the application writers update their stuff too, playing leapfrog, so that the poor customer gets left behind, needing ever more powerful and complicated (and expensive) machines and operating systems.

Windows Update knows what operating system is being used. If it's Windows 7 or 8.1, then the system eligible for the free upgrade (within the year).

Interesting, Ana. Windows is an ecosystem. Never thought of it that way. Just thought it wanted to take over the world.

I regretted upgrading from Windows 7. Windows 8 never really settled down on my machine so I scrapped it and put Ubuntu 14 on instead (free). I liked that windows 7 had a dvd maker but windows 8 got rid of that. I was very disappointed. Luckily I still have it on my old laptop. I agree that they tend to "improve" things just for the sake of it.

I am very happy with w8.1 every bit as good as previous versions. W10 looks promising, especially if you prefer the desktop mode.

I've always got on OK with Windows 8 and 8.1 and will go to Windows 10 as soon as it is released. The only incompatible program I had when upgrading to windows 8.1 was CorelDraw. Even then, it was only that scanning wouldn't work with Photo-Paint (part of the CorelDraw Suite). Easily overcome by using a different program to scan photos into the computer. All in all, Windows 8 has worked well with my computer's hardware and software. I hope Windows 10 will be the same.
