I want to take DD to Liverpool next March for weekend ,want to go by train any recommendations for train/hotel booking company or site

humptydumpty Fri 02-Aug-19 15:29:41

Normally I would have said SuperBreak but obviously not now. Just make sure you use a credit card to pay.

Maybe your train company do deals I know East Midland trains do.
We usually book ourselves though and do it separately booking the hotel with Booking.com.

There's a company called Hotel Direct who operate South somewhere but do train/hotel holidays/breaks.

I’d like to visit Liverpool too but am concerned it will be full
of hen/stag parties

KatyK Fri 02-Aug-19 16:32:50

Liverpool is fantastic. We've been a couple of times as I am a Beatle nut. We didn't see one stag or hen night and apart from all the Beatles stuff, it's a wonderful city (in my opinion).

I too would have recommended Super Break. Used them several times and was never disappointed.
Friendly and efficient staff.
Sorry to see them in trouble!

Stag/Hens seem to join the Ryanair flights for cheap do's abroad now rather than home towns.

Looking at todays Liverpool Echo in the letters page there are some good write-ups from those who've visited the city. A good letter from someone living in East Sussex who thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the heat that we had.

Is there a particular reason that you want a holiday company package?
Booking.com is great for searching by the criteria you want and you could then contact the hotel directly for a better rate.
Friday and Saturday nights are considerably more expensive than Sunday nights as by comparison and the city would be much quieter too into Monday / Tuesday .Be careful to check if there are any Beatles conventions etc on as that will push up prices and reduce availability.

Also check the football fixtures to make sure that Everton and Liverpool aren’t playing each other the weekend you choose !

Liverpool is a great place for a weekend break even if you aren’t interested in The Beatles .

My son was at uni there and I learnt a lot about all the above then .

I took my sister to Liverpool last year (by car).. I can recommend the Dolby Hotel. The room we had was compact but the hotel was well located right on the waterfront and was only a 10 minute walk to the centre and it was a reasonable price.

I agree with the comment about Booking.com. I have found them to be a really great site and the best is you can book accommodation and cancel at no cost should your circumstances change.
Expedia is another site I would recommend and for train trips try 'The Man in Seat 61.

Im going on a 2 day break to Liverpool in October. Ive just booked train tickets on trainline.com - cheap because its 12 weeks out. Also booked hotel on booking.com! And im in Australia! Looking forward to seeing my birth city after many years. Definitely doing a ferry across the Mersey.

I recently stayed in Liverpool at Hotel Indigo, which was reasonably priced and within walking distance of the waterfront and the town centre. Nice hotel.

Have you thought about looking on Airbnb for accommodation you can get some amazing places to stay for a weekend. Depending on what part of the country you are there are some really good train deals as your booking this early. My FIL comes to visit us down south from Durham a return ticket around is £25 but he books 3 months in advance.

Farawaynanny Sat 03-Aug-19 11:01:11

If you can book the train in advance you can get cheaper fares. We went on Virgin, booked ahead and got very good prices. I can recommend Premier Inn on Albert Dock. If you use a booking /travel agent you will pay a lot more.

I use Red Spotted Hanky website to book train fares everywhere. they are a good company. I am a Liverpudlian and when i was a child, I used to go past the Adelphi hotel which was the largest poshest hotel in the city in the 1940s...last time I stayed in the 80s it was rather shabby and run down. Go on Trip Advisor and look at the reviews as there are so many hotels in the city.

Hert2Hart Sat 03-Aug-19 11:43:21

I agree with all of the above, I tend to use Booking.com and book 12 weeks ahead for trains from trainline.com for good deals, going first class means you get fed and watered.

Liverpool is a compact city with several hotels near to attractions. Allow three days for sightseeing if you are in to museums, galleries, churches and Chinatown plus visit out to Crosby beach to see the Anthony Gormley sculptures. Not forgetting the ferry 'cross the Mersey.

One time we did a trip on 'Snowdrop' from Salford Quays down the Ship Canal to the Mersey, docking at Liverpool with a quicker return by double decker. Quite an entrance to the port !

recently a whole group of us had a Liverpool weekend. The highlight was a Beatles tour. Two taxi type cars took us round to each of the main sights, with pictures and commentary. It was really good, (even if very cold, wet and windy... tail end of Hurricane Hannah). I don’t know the name of company as organised by someone else. Our hotel was close to centre but rooms small and basic so I wouldn’t recommend. All they had for ten of us.

Nandalot Sat 03-Aug-19 12:44:22

What I meant to say was only hotel we could find for ten of us.
Enjoy your trip!

Try 'JustGo' or 'Omega' (same company). They do excellent package deals. Otherwise, go on to the Trainline site for trains to Lime Street. Lots of Hotels around there (Adelphi for one) that do deals.

Musicgirl Sat 03-Aug-19 20:07:59

When l want to visit somewhere by train l go to trainline a few weeks before l travel. They have some fantastic deals on off-peak travel and it often works out a lot more cheaply to go first class than the usual second class fare and only slightly more expensive than the offer for second class. If you have a senior citizens' railcard it is even cheaper.

Premier Inn at Albert Dock reasonably priced and in a great place. The Adelphi used to be The Savoy of the North, now avoid, whatever the deal.
If you stay at Premier, several nice breakfast stops - less 'pre-prepared' than Premier - actually on the dock.
Hanover Street Social and Salt House Tapas both great restaurants.
Tate Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, Slavery Museum, both Cathedrals and Gormley at Crosby all unmissable.
Do the hop-on-hop-off bus tour, you'll see all the interesting bits.
Try The Baltic Fleet for a beer, it's lovely - The Philharmonic and Ye Cracke should also not be missed.
If you can find David Olusoga's A House Through Time - the Liverpool one - from BBC2 before you go, it gives context to the city, if you're interested in history.
Enjoy!

I went a few weeks ago with a friend. Fabulous city, yes there were hen and stag parties in the City centre on Friday and Saturday nights but you don’t see them during the day! I agree that trainline.com is easy to book on, 12 weeks in advance for best deals. We stayed at the Travelodge near Lime Street Station, clean, convenient and very comfortable as well as good value for money. Do both routes of the open top bus trips, you learn so much. You’ll have a great time.

I often visit my son and family in Liverpool, it’s such a fabulous, interesting city. Absolutely my favourite thing to do is to go to Crosby to see the Anthony Gormley standing men. Very, very atmospheric and usually crowd free. Whatever the weather, those figures gazing out to sea never fail to affect me.
