I'm not surprised that Clarence House was maybe a bit shabby. It was a home not a hotel needing constant upgrading. It was bound to have had slightly faded curtains or soft furnishings as time had gone on just as our homes can wear a bit. I can't face the palaver of repainting or replacing curtains etc. I bet the Queen mother had a favourite seat etc.

Lots of shabby not so chic in my own house and decorating shelved. However, I have not opened my doors to the paying public (yet) and the RF are not short of a penny. They operate a thriving business apart from our compulsory donations.

Re Lady Glenconner. I believe she is writing a "fictional" book based on aristocrat's lives in the Caribbean and will be some sort of thriller. I am keeping an eye out for its release as would be great Christmas reading. I would love to be rich enough to stay in the villa (Fireflies?) in Mustique!

Have watched the first episode of the new series. Dont know why, but Im finding the actresses portrayal of Margaret Thatcher really irritating. Maybe its because shes an American actress struggling with a very british accent?

I loved series 1-3 and was looking forward to the new series. But I just didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. I did stick with it to the end but I came close to giving up a couple of times.

I have watched all of series four and this is the only series where I felt it was total fiction.
I can not imagine the conversations taking place especially where Charles said unkind words, he is far too well bred to have voiced the words they said he did.

I started to watch it and got as far as Diana being invited to Balmoral. I have to admit I have found this episode a bit upsetting and won’t be watching any further. If there is any truth in how the royal family and Camillas involvement is portrayed in this episode they should be ashamed.

That’s the big I read about. The producer/writer said he’d made it all up g do if dramatic effect. No evidence that Charles & camilla ‘got together’ in the first 5 years of his marriage., (although they phoned each other) but only after the marriage had broken down & she was seeing others too.

If there is any truth in how the royal family and Camillas involvement is portrayed in this episode they should be ashamed.

You have to take it all with a huge pinch of salt, Pennylane. This series, above all the others, shouts fiction rather than fact. It's a shame because those who believe every word will have a skewed view of the monarchy when the Queen and Prince Phillip deserve better.

Having watched all of series 4 I too have not enjoyed it as much as 1-3. I think this is because the series is portraying, to those of us in my age bracket,( early 60's) events still clear in our minds.
We remember the very thin Diana on the steps of St Paul's, the insistence of taking Wills to Oz, the rumours, the tapes, etc etc
We weren't privy of course to things which happened behind closed doors and many of the events of series 4 would appear to be taken from details revealed in Morton's book, and the interviews of both Charles and Diana. These in turn led of course to be a big part of the Queen's Annus Horribilis in 1992...
Interesting article in the Mailonline this morning re The Crown needing to be seen as fiction not fact...such a reaction never seen re previous series, but I suppose events shown could be seen as quite detrimental to the present popularity of Charles and Camilla which has increased seemingly as the years have gone by.
