Netflix The Crown series 4 starts tonight...who will be watching it?

I really enjoyed series 1-3 partly due to the historical aspect I think. From the trailers I've seen, series 4 is set in the 80's- so the Thatcher Years, Charles and Diana etc.

This is recent memory and I wonder how it'll be received by those whom it portrays, and their relatives, who are still with us...maybe they'll rise above it with no comment.

However some 'friends' of the Royals are already in the press criticising the portrayal of C and D, and Carol Thatcher has dismissed as nonsense the way her mother has been shown as favouring her brother (but even when he got lost in the Sahara I seem to remember Mrs T defending him so maybe the producers aren't too far away from the reality!).

Some of it will have to be taken with a pinch of salt but I'm looking forward to it.

Must NOT binge watch!

Yes we shall be watching it tonight. We even watched the last episode of series 3 again yesterday, in readiness wink

Nadateturbe Sun 15-Nov-20 17:09:28

Yes. Will probably binge watch.

I really enjoyed the first 3 and I’ll definitely be watching series 4. That’s a good idea Bathsheba. I’m now off to watch the final episode of series 3!

DiscoDancer1975 Sun 15-Nov-20 17:13:59

Is that on? I thought they were getting ready to make series 4. We’ll definitely be watching. Good idea to watch the last one of series 3 again.

I'm on episode 2. It's OK but some pretty crass representation of the Thatchers put me off a bit. I'll stick with it I expect.

Susan56 Sun 15-Nov-20 17:17:59

Yes,we will be watching.Pretty sure we will binge watch although will try not to!

Parsley3 Sun 15-Nov-20 17:21:25

Yes I will watch it. Have just finished series 3 in preparation. I love seeing them being dressed and undressed like toddlers.

Pretty shocked at the Independent's article, to be honest, which gives a recap of the first three series. One heading states "Howard Wilson Resigned". Yes, really. And no, it wasn't a typo, because the mistake is repeated in the text. A junior reporter I imagine, for him Harold Wilson is ancient history, and no one checking before publication.

Binge watching and have just seen my brother in episode 5 smile

Watching episode 3, series 4, after chores this morning and before dinner soon! I have liked all the series so far and have liked the fact they have reminded me of recent history. In this series Mrs Thatcher seems to be a parody of herself and it feels more like a soap opera so far. Looking forward to the rest of them but will take them them with a pinch of salt.

Don’t have Netflix, would definitely watch The Crown if I did.

My DIL, after watching past series, told me how good it was, and informed me that Princess Margaret had wanted to marry this divorced man, but wasn’t allowed to.

I was just amazed that this was news to her, but I suppose royal events back in the 50’s was just history to her.

EllanVannin Sun 15-Nov-20 18:00:53

No thanks.

Pantglas2 Sun 15-Nov-20 18:48:43

My DD and DGD don’t understand why Charles couldn’t marry Camilla.....trying to understand that virginity/suitability was prized over love in the early seventies.

It's our special binge treat when MrC comes out of hospital!
I've spent much of today sorting out a TV plus firestick in the bedroom for this purpose.
Mind you - I can't wait until Imelda Staunton takes the reins / reign ( see what I did there!?smile)

Calendargirl Sun 15-Nov-20 18:57:48

It was another world Pantglas.

Not for me don’t have Netflix but wouldn’t want to watch it if I did

Lucca Sun 15-Nov-20 19:01:45

I hope I won’t

DiscoDancer1975 Sun 15-Nov-20 19:06:01

Yes fannyC, as much as I think Olivia Coleman is a brilliant actress, she doesn’t really do it for me as the Queen. The voice is good, but there’s something wrong in the way she looks. Imelda Staunton will be spot on I’m sure. I do hope your husband is home soon, completely recovered ?.

harrysgran Sun 15-Nov-20 19:06:51

Yes I've watched first 3 episodes bit random but did anyone notice the mouse running across the floor in the queen mothers sitting room the scene where everyone is waiting to hear if Charles had proposed

Grandmabatty Sun 15-Nov-20 19:20:43

I saw the mouse too Harrysgran. I'm not a royalist but I enjoy watching for the costumes and history, albeit probably biased at times. I also enjoy thinking about my life at that time. I was married the same year as Charles and Diana.

Doodledog Sun 15-Nov-20 19:26:59

I didn't spot the mouse grin.

I have enjoyed it. I've been looking forward to it for ages, and have set aside today for unashamed bingeing. I am not a royalist, so watch partly for the history, and partly for the soap opera side of it. I think I am on Episode 7 now (the funeral of the friend killed in the avalanche is on).

I think Olivia Coleman has been good, but am less keen on the portrayal of Thatcher. The voice was all wrong, and I didn't find her convincing.

My daughter is watching it 100 miles away, and we are texting one another. We agreed that this series is less kind to the Queen than the others. I was sorry for Charles up to this series, and still have sympathy for him as a sensitive soul with pretty much no love or kindness in his upbringing, but the way they are portraying his marriage and treatment of Diana is putting me off him.

Smileless2012 Sun 15-Nov-20 19:36:13

Not for me; haven't watched any of it.

I felt like that until I watched it. I think it was after Series 2 had ended that I watched the first two. I don't remember the 50's, and was a child in the 60's, so whilst I knew about a lot of the events I have no adult memory of them, and it was interesting to watch them unfold. I didn't know, for instance, that Harold Wilson had Alzheimers, although I have a memory of him as PM.
