I am raising this as a separate conversation although it has been mentioned on another thread re the Muslim Female Councillors and reports of Mysogyny.

It is worrying to know Anti Semitism is reportedly rising in the UK . When a Political Party is facing accusations of Anti Semetism that becomes a major issue. Now my comment will be challenged but I for one have been asking how such blatent cases of Anti Semitism are being allowed in the UK. We have laws to handle it but they are not being used, why? I will most certainly be happy to say that I do not believe for one minute the majority of Labour MP's nor voters are Anti Semetic, quite the reverse, but is it time voices spoke out against Anti Semitism or at least understood it is an issue within some parts of the Labour Movement.

I have noticed this tendancy from certain Labour MP's and groups they belong to for many years but they were always under the radar and not thought 'influencial' enough, however times have changed. Labour run councils have used Anti Semetic behaviour over issues such as Flying the Palestinian Flag over Tower Hamlets , Calls for boycotting of Israeli goods, banning Jewish films etc. etc.

There is no doubt more interest being taken by the media over such matters and there are calls for Corbyn to show leadership over the actions of the Labour Party activism at Oxford University , indeed something is going radically wrong with our universities full stop an entire thread could be dedicated to that topic alone. I am not talking of racist tweets such as those made by MP's such as Dianne Abbot , Helen Goodman et al. Whilst they are relevant it would just dissolve into a tit for tat fest of he said she said to the left and right of politics. There are idiots in all party's !

I am not , and some will not believe a word of what I am about to say, trying to score a political point. I take my hat off to those Labour MP's who are speaking openly about this problem and calling for action from their Leader. This is not some right wing rag hyperbol taking place but there is something of a 'menacing ' tendency in some quarters of the Party and I hope those MP's who are doing their damnedest to openly stop it's progression do not fail or as some have eluded to run the risk of deselection for speaking out, that's another thread story too.

Are these people anti-Semitic too?

As there is another thread started by Ana on the recent Ken Livingstone/Naz Shah debacle over Anti Semitic rhetoric I wasn't going to bother to 'bump' this thread but it is going to end up with repeat posts of the same nature .

I thought some who may not have noticed this thread might be interested as a lot of detail has been covered already.

Apologies to Ana if I have trodden on her toes but I read the other thread and saw the direction it was taking and I thought some posters might find it interesting to read this one also as the two are most definitely talking of the same thing.

Lol. posted on wrong thread ( should have been the ' breast ironing' one.)

daphnedill Tue 12-Apr-16 13:24:42

rosesarered, How can you say there's a 'lack of interest'? This is page 26 and there have been over 600 replies! I expect everybody's had their say. Until Baroness Royall's report is published, we don't really have too many facts.

I've read the links people have posted and most of them come back to a few isolated incidents and general criticisms. I do not accept that criticism of the current Israeli government is the same as antisemiticism. Nevertheless, it does seem that there have been some incidents of pure antisemiticism. The people involved should be kicked out of the Labour Party and/or prosecuted, as should anybody whether or not connected to a political party.

There has been so much confusing of issues and I think most people would like to see some facts.

Just for the record, Disraeli came from a Sephardic Jewish background. He converted to Anglicanism when young without, it seems, much conviction in either faith and could not have become an MP without having converted because of the parliamentary oath. He was by no means the first MP from a Jewish family but, yes, the first PM. I think Queen Victoria liked him rather more than Mr Gladstone.

I have no idea about the current oath and how that would affect a party leader committed to another faith or sect other than Anglican Christianity or, indeed, an agnostic or atheist.

There seems to be a distinct 'lack of interest' in this subject POGS...... Wonder why?

Well as mentioned so many times before Anniebach we will see what the Baroness Royall Inquiry findings are.

Anniebach Mon 11-Apr-16 15:39:55

Yes POGS, I get it but I stand by my view it is anti Israel not the entire Jewish people

Thank you POGS, it does seem the actions of Israel are causing deep anger, but 30 cases over five years is a very small number amoung thousands, it's wrong, but I am sure far more Muslims face far more racism . I cannot recall which university the British student who was shot by Israelis because he was helping some people in Pakistan was from

I have read the Jewish Cronicle are claiming universities who have received Muslim speakers ,who in turn has criticised Isreal 's treatment of Pakistan , as anti Semitic , nothing about a university banning a Jew.

I accept and understand students criticising Israel, I do the same, this does not make a person anti Semitic . Will have to wait for niggle to share her knowledge of the anti Semitic universities

I have to go out, but in the limited time I had, I found out that the NUS officially 'no platforms' only five organisations:

1 The terrorist group Al-Muhajiroun,
2 The racist British National Party
3 English Defence League,
4 The neo-Caliphite organization Hizb ut-Tahrir
5 The anti-Semitic Muslim Public Affairs Committee.

Individual student unions are free to refuse to share a platform with individuals, so I'm assuming these prospective Jewish speakers come under this category. I'd be interested to know who they are.

Some universities refuse to no platform anybody, because they claim it's a denial of free speech.

Am also awaiting niggly's list.

Anniebach Mon 11-Apr-16 14:55:32

I have contacted the Welsh universities student unions and it hasn't happened in Welsh universities. I think the universities should be named and await niggles list

daphnedill Mon 11-Apr-16 14:45:09

niggly,

Please could you name the Jewish speakers who have been banned and which universities have banned them.

(Not disputing it, but haven't got the time to find out for myself.)

Anniebach Mon 11-Apr-16 14:00:20

I have no knowledge of English universities niggly ,

nigglynellie Mon 11-Apr-16 13:47:58

Pakistan? That aside, I think you'll find it's a hatred of Jews generally, otherwise why ban certain speakers on some university campus? answer:- They are Jews!

Anniebach Mon 11-Apr-16 13:23:22

I am interested in how much is anti semitism and how much anti Israel , they are not the same thing, I am against the Israel treatment of Pakistan but not anti Semitic

Nonnie Mon 11-Apr-16 13:05:35

Part of a quote from Boris

"Sadiq Khan has himself belatedly admitted that Labour is afflicted with anti-semitism. He has rightly called it a “badge of shame”. But for years now he has been sharing platforms with some of the most backward and sectarian forces in Islam – men such as Sulaiman Ghani, who has denounced gays and called women “subservient”, and called for the release of al-Qaeda terrorists.
Khan spoke at an event with a man called Azam Tamimi, who threatened reprisals of “fire throughout the world” after the Mohammed cartoons – words Khan dismissed as “flowery language”. Khan has repeatedly spoken at jihadi flag-waving events sponsored by the Islam Channel, which has been criticised by Ofcom for condoning marital rape. Khan hired a speech- writer who speculated that the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby was staged."

Don't know how much truth in this as all politicians manipulate info.

nigglynellie Mon 11-Apr-16 12:25:35

I just can't get my head round this anti jewish rhetoric. This dislike (hatred?!) of Jews is quite beyond me. Why, FGS would any right minded person be so venomous about someone else simply because of their religious beliefs or racial origins?! Ed Milliband would never be PM because he's Jewish?!!! Whatever sort of way is that to talk?! Yes, we have had a Jewish PM, namely Disraeli, which can't be denied or changed. Referring to people as Zio's? In a derogatory way!! Unbelievable! Let's hope Jeremy Corbyn and anyone else comes up against this grabage gets a grip on this sinister development.
