.. in celebration of Gransnet's 2nd birthday - what else would we celebrate with? cupcake grin

As you've probably seen from Geraldine's thread in Site Stuff, we'll be celebrating Gransnet's 2nd birthday on 5 May.

We want you to join in and show us the birthday cakes (or cupcakes) you've made in the past - or you could even use this as an excuse to bake another cake grin The cakes can be as they are - or decorated - we're not fussed (cake is cake, right?)

The winner will receive a family pass (two adults and two children) to Drayton Manor Park and the runners up will receive a mystery prize <ooh>

To enter, simply upload the picture of your cake onto this thread, using the image upload tool. See our image-uploading tips at the top of this thread if you need help.

It would be great if you could include the recipe, any tips on how you made it and give specifics on decorating styles, tools or tricks that you used.

The winner will be chosen from all the cake pics uploaded to this thread and to Facebook.

The competition closes on Friday 3 May, at which point we'll collate all the images and open up a voting system so you can pick one is the best (keep an eye on this thread for the poll). The poll will close at midnight on Tuesday 7 May and we'll announce the winner and two runners up on this thread and the 'Won Anything?' thread.

If you're picked to be the winner or a runner up, we'll contact you on Wednesday 8 May for your details so we can send out your mystery prize - so keep an eye on your emails!

The winner and runners up will be asked for the recipe they used to bake the cake, and we'll publish a special birthday cake page.

And if you wanted to add your cake recipe to our recipe section you're more than welcome to.

To see our terms and conditions go to our T&Cs page.

Additional T&Cs: The main winner may visit Drayton Manor Theme Park on a date of their choosing during the 2013 season. The 2013 season runs until Friday 1st November. A family pass is for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children). Winners will be issued with a reference number, which must be presented at the ticket booth prior to entry into the park. No cash refund or alternative is available. The prize cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer or promotion, including Family, Advanced and Website tickets.

Basic chocolate and vanilla marble cake made in giant silicone cupcake mould. Spread and fill with vanilla and chocolate butter icings. Decorate with white chocolate finger biscuits and chopped Mars bars. Add a few squiggles made from melted dark chocolate.

My "Toby the Tram Engine" cake for DGS Toby's first birthday! It was
basically 2 madeira sponges baked in loaf tins, sandwiched with buttercream and then shaped to give the curved roof line. Sugarpaste in brown and black for the sides with a band of grey, over a thin coat of buttercream ,white for the roof, red for the lettering and put on a board which was then iced in green with sugar flowers, "rocks" of grey sugarpaste, train tracks made of dowelling spray-painted silver (edible colouring) and the "gravel" was desiccated coconut with a bit of black colouring paste to make a grainy grey effect. Took days and much blood sweat and tears as DD was expecting a "bought " cake. (How dare she!)The face was made of sugarpaste and (roughly) copied from a picture of Toby the tram engine, and stuck on. Will's face when he saw it made it more than worthwhile - he went from the cake to his books, back to the cake and announced "It's Toby the Tram" Whew!!Time in Granny hours? Prohibitive!

Oo-err that's odd. The image might be too big, can you try to make it smaller (50KB max)? If you haven't got an application to do that, this is a good website you can use to crop images.

Alternatively, you could try submitting it on Facebook instead.

I think the innate lumpiness and bumpiness of mine would make it clear that it is definitely a home bake!!grin

shysal Thu 25-Apr-13 15:07:50

Resized, thanks for website.

You really think we're gonna wade through boxes of old photographs, find some of birthday cakes baked back in the mists of time, work out how to transfer an old non-digital photo onto Gransnet, then actually do it, all for a pass to a theme park, to include noisy rides, crowds and screaming kids?!!!

C'mon! Offer it on Mumsnet.

Or bake another one now? #dayslonggone

My mum made fabulous rock buns. Delicious dunked in a glass of milk. No photo of said bun, but we've hundreds of stones on the beach that look similar and possibly have the very same texture. wink
