I've just counted 14 'news & politics' threads on the Active forum. There were days earlier this week when it felt as if it was every other thread. Do we dare to hope that there are now other topics of conversation? I've been really pleased to see people making efforts at normal other threads. Let's get GN back towhat it was - a site for chat, laughs, and support!!

Back to the boring, nothing worth posting on, state it was in? I'm thoroughly enjoying all this!

sunseeker Thu 30-Jun-16 10:11:12

And it's usually the same people, with the same views, talking to each other.

Teetime Thu 30-Jun-16 10:16:48

I thoroughly agree with you Nonna although I appreciate some people enjoy a political debate I have felt recently that the Granset site is in danger of a number of us and I include myself giving up on it completely. Variety is the spice of life - I'm wracking my brains to think of new threads and they may be silly but I feel the need for light relief from all this. I'm married to a major news freak and it coming at me from all angles.

I did give up on GN for the past week Teetime and did think about giving it up permanently. I felt overwhelmed with the barrage of opinion and diatribes from the same people who never run out of steam or seem able to recognise that there are other views held just as passionately by other GNs but who are a bit more reticent at expressing them.

Of course we all have a right to post but it felt a bit like a takeover by politicos and really put me - and I suspect others - off. They will say "don't read the threads then" but I would say is it really necessary to have so flipping many of them all about the same topic?

Hopefully we can go back to a more balanced menu now. That's what I would like anyway.

Greyduster Thu 30-Jun-16 10:49:23

Teetime you are nor the only one who is married to a major news freak and it has driven me barmy. I tend to think that Gransnet is becoming weighed down with these political threads now - those who thrive on that kind of political cut and thrust probably consider those of us who don't to be "lightweights", but some of the debate has become so vitriolic and one sided I really don't want to get involved. I have enough of it at home.

Ditto, ditto, ditto to everything said above.

Teetime Thu 30-Jun-16 10:56:48

I should just say in DHs defence he doesn't thrust his views on me but he likes to listen to the news a lot and read the papers and that's Ok. My problem is both daughters are in opposing camps and I'm in the middle with a family wedding pending. Its such a shame its affecting them like that. I come here for some respite and relief and if I can raise a laugh with some of my postings I'm happy. This is not to say that I don't have quite strong political views but I am sure no-one wants to hear them I often think of social media like a coffee morning - if I was at one where a few people were obnoxious or banged on and on about one subject I would beat a hasty retreat. In any case you cant get a true flavour of what someone is saying on line - you cant see their face or hear their voice so you cant tell if they are being ironic, facetious or serious. Dare say someone will take issue with me in which case my coffee cup has gone down and that's me leaving to go shopping.

Ditto from me too smile

fiorentina51 Thu 30-Jun-16 10:56:59

Me too. Same people, same comments over and over and over and......?

POGS Thu 30-Jun-16 11:00:58

blush

Kateykrunch Thu 30-Jun-16 11:02:11

I've tried with some more light hearted posts...but no-one responds much, so I must be boring (ebay, swimming and the like)! Come on, I need tips on how to sort my 'missing' kitchen wall cupboard out! Due to ebay, I now have lovely bleached beech kitchen unit doors with a RANDOM mahogany leaded glass door looming large! I may have to tart it up to look like an open shelve unit, can't take it down as it is the other part of the cooker hood housing, its just the insides of the cupboard is not that pretty, any ideas gratefully accepted, ta.

Teetime Thu 30-Jun-16 11:13:55

I'm having a job to visualise it can you take a picture of it and post so we can help/interfere with your interior decorating?

Greyduster Thu 30-Jun-16 11:20:48

I was just about to suggest a picture too! smile

petitpois Thu 30-Jun-16 11:24:17

I agree (with apols for starting Gove thread earlier). No more politics from me, i promise. Be nice to have a break and some positivity for a change smile

Lillie Thu 30-Jun-16 11:24:34

Ditto.
I'm feeling end of school year this week and break up very soon, so "out with the old, in with the new" come September, and that includes politics for me too. It's exhausting trying to keep up with everyone's views.

sunseeker Thu 30-Jun-16 11:25:41

I did start the Who would rescue you thread which I hope provided some amusement. Not wanting to discuss politics ALL the time doesn't mean we are lightweights, so more non politic threads please!

POGS Thu 30-Jun-16 11:30:04

Katey

I don't know how to describe this but here goes. My idea does sound horrible but I've seen this and it worked. It depends on the style you have created in your kitchen of course. confused

My cousin is really good at home decoration. She altered a kitchen cupboard by painting it , taking the door off and replacing the door panel with chicken wire surrounded by the original frame obviously. It worked , it looked like shabby country sheek.

Greyduster Thu 30-Jun-16 11:48:15

If I tried that, I would probably get the shabby, but not the chic! How long could you live with chicken wire, knowing that it was, well, just chicken wire!

LullyDully Thu 30-Jun-16 12:36:06

An any on suggest a good t towel or how to clean my kitchen floor?blush

Greyduster Thu 30-Jun-16 12:42:03

Perhaps we should have two Gransnets - Gransnet and Gransnet Lite!

Greyduster Thu 30-Jun-16 12:45:44

Sorry, POGS for dissing your idea - I ought to come up with one of my own before I comment on other people's!

GandTea Thu 30-Jun-16 12:47:33

GD, I like the idea of a Lite version, no politics. religion etc.

We did seem to be lightening up for a while, then all hell let lose again. But we do still have some interesting threads for the politically inept like myself.

Maggiemaybe Thu 30-Jun-16 13:35:03

Gransnet Lite was Grannynet, wasn't it? Died a death a few months ago.

Gagagran Thu 30-Jun-16 13:37:14

I like GNLite too - think it would be more popular than GNDeep/Heavy or whatever. What could we call it? GNFullstrength? Any ideas?
