Panic buying again!

I was horrified to read in the papers today that people are rushing out to stockpile food again - and toilet paper! It was very stressful at last March trying to buy essential food items and I was hoping people would be more sensible and not panic at the thought of stricter restrictions over the winter.

I really hope this is not true and is just the tabloids stirring things up. I also heard that slots for online deliveries are also being snapped up, which makes me even more stressed.

I am not physically able to walk far so find grocery shopping difficult yet not being in the vulnerable category, I lost access to online deliveries. I switched to click and collect, staying up until the early hours to snaffle a newly released slot and really don't want to do that again!

I think I need to go and have a lie down! At least I think I have enough toilet rolls at the moment, after getting down to my last one and having to beg one off a friend, I made sure that I always have an unopened pack of nine in my house!

Yes people have gone mad again. Apparently yesterday there were long queues outside a local Aldi. Today is my normal Sainsbury's shop as Monday is usual quiet but apparently people had been queueing at 7.30 a.m. When I went in at 10.30 it about three times as busy as usual. Thankfully everything I needed was on the shelves, including bread flour which I have still found difficult to find. Yes people were buying big packs of toilet rolls but thankfully I have enough from the last time. Still I hope we don't have a second lockdown.

Goodness me, you must have bought a lot of toilet rolls to last six months without needing more!

I've done all my grocery shopping since April from Tesco Online (apart from meat, fruit/veg and fish, which I buy from local suppliers).

I have a subscription, so it's no problem, but I have noticed that certain items are now limited, so maybe they have learnt their lesson.

Did having the subscription help with getting a slot? I use click and collect so the delivery offer is not a saving for me but if it gives me priority booking I might consider it.

I've probably got enough toilet rolls to last a few months too. I live on my own, but have three toilets in my house. Each toilet has a roll on the holder and two spares. I only really use one toilet, so that's six spares. I buy jumbo packs of 24 a couple of times a year and took delivery of a pack last week.

Unless I have a tummy bug or something, I'm not intending to buy any more rolls until next year.

Well, what a fascinating topic for a late night thread!

It works out to about £4 a week, so is cheaper than some of the slots available. Minimum spend is £40. I have two cats and buy paper and printer ink for work, so I do spend that.

When I go to book a slot, there are four weeks available, instead of the usual three, so it gives priority booking for subscription holders. Even at the height of the lockdown, I didn't have a problem getting a booking as long as I booked in advance.

When I book four weeks in advance, I just put one item in the basket to reserve the slot and then add to it during the month. I buy meat, fruit/veg and fish from local suppliers, but haven't done any other grocery shopping at all.

Since lockdown started, I've only filled up my car twice, so I'm saving on petrol. It's worked for me and I'll probably carry on when this is all over.

PS. I got the price wrong. It's £47.94 for six months. All Tesco deliveries are now £4.50, no matter what day or time. So you can have two deliveries a month for less than booking two deliveries individually.

Teacheranne, I do the same as growstuff except I pay monthly though by direct debit. £8 every 4 weeks.

Imagine rolling up in a 4x4 buying up all the £1 t.rolls. How selfish and greedy is that when they can clearly buy the expensive ones ? One thing laughs at another really.

Further away from me are large houses turned into flats/bedsits with a lot of unemployed people who rely on the cheapest of everything and you have these sharks coming along. It makes my blood boil as you can see.

The same thing happened in March with people you've never seen before, coming out of town snapping up everything they could to avoid restrictions/queues in supermarkets.

While I disagree with shelf clearing, just because someone can afford a more expensive version of something doesn’t mean they have no right to a cheaper version

FannyCornforth Tue 22-Sept-20 08:54:25

Sorry,*Teacheranne*, I wasn't very clear.
It was meant for people such as yourself (and myself) who can't go shopping in person.

FannyCornforth Tue 22-Sept-20 08:55:08

Sorry again, quote fail!

FannyCornforth Tue 22-Sept-20 08:55:51

And bold fail. I give up.

I’m truly not being rude or wishing to offend anyone but what we are doing on here is adding to the panic just like the newspapers etc. For everyone that mentions the possibility of panic buying there will be someone who hears it and goes straight out for extra groceries, loo rolls etc. My own daughter mentioned a problem in her area at the weekend. Why haven’t the supermarkets immediately set a limit again on what people can buy! Let’s hope it doesn’t all get as crazy as it did before, especially for people who have genuine difficulties with shopping etc.

Blackcat3 Tue 22-Sept-20 09:27:46

I’m sorry to say it..but threads like these give people the idea to rush out and stockpile! Herd mentality.....

Aepgirl Tue 22-Sept-20 09:31:45

It’s the selfish over the considerate again. My usual supermarket has said that they won’t allow people to over-buy items, putting a limit on numbers.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 22-Sept-20 09:38:56

iI am ok for toilet rolls, I buy ones made from bamboo online and have a subscription for a box every 16 weeks. Just taken delivery of a box. As for food I will put my hand up and say that I have bought two or three of most cupboard essentials, pasta, olive oil, sugar, coffee, tea etc. and put it away in a box. The reason being is I don't want to be queuing up outside a supermarket in the winter, in the rain and cold. I also have a delivery from my veg shop. I feel that by doing it this way I am one less person using home delivery from a supermarket.

inishowen Tue 22-Sept-20 09:39:13

We saw Christmas stuff in Lidl yesterday and I felt it was a deliberate ploy to start panic buying. People may think it won't be around by Christmas.

WoodLane7 Tue 22-Sept-20 09:39:53

Tesco by me ran out of toilet paper and eggs back end of last week according to a couple of people I have been talking to, They had eggs today, don’t know about toilet paper as I have plenty and don’t need to buy any more
Did we learn nothing from earlier in the year? There would be ample Togo round if people didn’t run around like headless chickens stockpiling stuff

25Avalon Tue 22-Sept-20 09:45:33

Remember all the food that got chucked away because stupid people stocked up on everything leaving others with nothing.
I did read that similar problems occurred in WW11 which was another reason for rationing so maybe some people are just wired to panic and be selfish and thoughtless. Did I hear the word ‘morons’?

Desdemona Tue 22-Sept-20 09:51:24

I work in a supermarket and there are some people starting to purchase large amounts of certain items again, ie loo roll, flour, dried yeast etc.

Hopefully they will remain in a minority.

TanaMa Tue 22-Sept-20 10:01:22

My GD has a weekend job with pne of the top supermarkets and mentioned to me that people were already emptying the shelves and stockpiling. All the s/m should enforce a limit to certain items now rather than wait until the situation gets as dire as before.

Maggymay Tue 22-Sept-20 10:08:27

Went to our local Sainsbury’s yesterday afternoon it was quieter than usual and plenty on the shelves,I expect that will change very soon.

NannyG123 Tue 22-Sept-20 10:08:56

Why are people stockpiling the only reason there was a problem was because of people stockpiling. People need to get a grip and shop normally, as in buying only things you need that week, or month . Not looking forward to queuing again. Hope it won't come to that.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 22-Sept-20 10:20:01

Listening to Radio 5L yesterday morning, Nicky Campbell mentioned that he hoped people wouldn't start panic buying again. He was quickly admonished by his co presenter who told him that just mentioning it would trigger that very thing.
Even I, who loathes the selfishness had a twinge of worry that I ought to get a delivery booked. I'm shielding still so can't go shopping and wouldn't normally worry about my next shop but he stirred something in me.
I haven't booked a shop yet though.

polnan Tue 22-Sept-20 10:29:19

well I don`t understand the panic buying.. I thought the media,, don`t we love to blame them for winding us up?

the media have suggested only a 2 week lockup? but then, being in an optimistic mood (till I read the other thread here) I don`t think we will get a lockup just yet,, warning,,, yes,, telling off! (does the Government tell us off?)

but I was thinking no lockup just yet..

but I have heard that our smallish Morrisons is making us queue again, not sure I can face that...

Startingover61 Tue 22-Sept-20 10:34:48

I did an online grocery shop (Sainsbury’s) yesterday but earliest delivery I could get was Sat evening, so went for that one. I noticed some items were out of stock and they were suggesting alternatives.

Craftycat Tue 22-Sept-20 10:46:37

No sign of it in either Sainsbury's or Morrisons down here. Really quiet thus morning.
