Aibu to put the heating on? Have you put yours on yet? This is the first day I've felt chilly. My wall thermometer says it's 20C inside but this is an old house & my feet & hands are cold. I wanted to hold on longer before switching it on but I don't think I can.

Our heating is never switched off. It doesn't come on when its warm and it is easy to override the control if we decide we need it. We don't have a general rule about it being off for summer....as here in Scotland summer can be non existent some years. Fortunately this summer has been not too bad....but heating on when we feel cool. ?

It is interesting to read about costs. My gas and electric this month were £42, naturally it will be higher each month onwards. Its a 4 bed new build detached.

No pensioner should be too cold, I read on money saving expert sometimes about people wrapping up head to toe and saying they are in 12 degrees. We all get a winter heating allowance

Kim19 Fri 25-Sept-20 15:28:53

I put on a thicker layer top and bottom. So far so good.......

SueDonim Fri 25-Sept-20 15:35:48

I’ve got three layers on and am still cold! There’s a limit to how much clothing anyone can wear and still be able to move. grin

I dread the Winter in our house, it is sooooooo cold! In a heatwave it is ideal, just a little cool. I grew up in an enormous Victorian house where we had ice flowers etched on the windows each morning and at weekends my sister and I would wait to hear the rattle of the coal scuttle before we ventured out from under the covers. I swore when I grew up I would have heat in every room but who could have foreseen the rise in power costs. Every year around this time my DH and I have the Big Row about the Heating! When we dragged our ancient central heating into the twenty-first century DH told the builder we would turn the heat on as we needed it, which as far as he's concerned is when snow is on the ground! We've just had this year's row, I am reduced to tears (at least they're warm). And apparently I only have to ask if I want it on. But, really, it's only September you know. I have MS and when I'm in one position for any length of time and am cold (as at night)I seize up like a rusty old jalopy. Getting downstairs to put the heating on in the morning in Winter is positively hazardous.

I think you're entitled to be warm. However, at this time of year, if I'll be spending some time in just one room, I often have the gas fire on for an hour in the evening rather than heat the whole house. I also put thicker socks and an extra layer on if I feel chilly. I have a fleecy, man's shirt I use for this. I call it my ugly shirt because it really is rather unattractive.

Luckylegs Fri 25-Sept-20 16:56:34

I’ve just put my heating on to come on for a little while in the morning and in the evenings totally! I’ve also dug out my lovely electric overblanket! It’s now on the bed ready! If I go to bed with cold feet, it takes hours for me to go to sleep.

My heatings is always on I too live in an old house and I need the heating on to warm it up. The only issue is my DH wants it lowered and I want it higher. Up down up down I’ve got the hive on my phone so that I can alter the heating from a distance if I find the house has gone cold wink

Happysexagenarian Fri 25-Sept-20 17:30:44

Still wearing t-shirts, shorts and sandals down here on the IoW. As I write this the sun is blazing through the rooflights in the dining room where I'm sewing and it's
getting too warm to stay here. But it was a bit nippy in the bathroom this morning so I might turn on the heated towel rail and perhaps put our lecky blankie back on the bed ready for it getting cooler. We don't usually start using our heating till early November. We have a solid fuel boiler which has to be cleaned out and relit every morning so we're used go getting up to cold rooms.

MiniMoon Fri 25-Sept-20 18:17:18

My heating has been on for an hour at a time for the last few days.
It was cold here this morning, and when I turned up the thermostat it clicked on at 16°. I am going to put it on for a couple of hours before we go to bed, just to warm the rooms through.
This is a cold house, it faces east, and in the winter we don't see much sunshine.

Starblaze Fri 25-Sept-20 18:28:28

I have noticed perchance, an occasional warming of the house at times I have felt a bit chilly. I do not change the thermostat, the thermostat retains all heating responsibilities and I am innocent of any wrongdoing.

With that in mind:

I categorically deny any and all allegations that necessary dusting of said thermostat could have changed the temperature setting in any meaningful way.

BlueBelle Fri 25-Sept-20 18:52:38

I live in a big old Victorian house with no heating bar two gas fires one in each main room I can’t put them on yet way too early (money wise) so it’s a jumper hot water bottle and a blanket for me when I sit down in the evenings and a nice high tog duvet and hottie bottle at night

Good one Starblaze. I shall reserve polishing our thermostat until an opportune (really cold) time.

Lulubelle perhaps it's time to refuse to get out of bed in the mornings until DH has gone downstairs, put the heating on and brought you a nice hot cup of tea.

I’m holding off. House is in that mid, it’s definitely not warm, but not yet freezing mode. So saving on bills. And my pathetic gesture to environment. Sure I’ll give in soon though.

Starblaze you are an inspiration to us all!

My living room and hall is set at 22deg all year, bedrooms 18. The hall floor was warm this morning, so the heating would have come on whenever the temp dropped to 21 during the night. It's a new build, so well insulated. The sun mostly stops the living room from dropping during the day, but overnight is different in winter. I would definitely be switching it on if it wasn't thermostatically controlled though.

Missiseff Sat 26-Sept-20 07:37:42

Never understood this. I never turn mine off for any length of time. If I'm cold, whether it's February or June, I put it on. Always found it odd that people don't.

craftyone Sat 26-Sept-20 09:03:00

I am adapting, yay, enough to go cycling later. The sun is blazing in and will keep the house at a good temperature. Its 6 degrees out but not in my sunny walled garden which is a lot warmer

Grannybuy, these new houses are wonerfully insulated, even between the floors. It sounds as though you are the same as me, underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs and different zones downstairs. Bedroom was 19.7 this morning so there is a definite welcome cooling in the bedrooms, I like it at 18

glammanana Sat 26-Sept-20 09:17:31

This last week I have put mine on between 5-7pm it warms the bungalow quickly and keeps things toasty for the night, during the afternoon the sun has been flooding the lounge before switching its self off about 4pm then you can notice the difference and need a little boost from the CH.

I am surprised how many people play with their heating controls. Our system works entirely on the thermostat all year round, no switching on or off. The thermostat is set at 18 degrees and the heating comes on morning and evening. Very occasionally in really cold weather(temperature below 0) we might put it on for an hour at lunchtime, but usally we do not look at it or adjust it from one years end to another.

Woodburner lit for the first time this evening.

Jim-Jams on!

EllanVannin Sun 27-Sept-20 19:10:10

Clear sky over the Mersey----damn cold too, sod the bill the heating's on !

B9exchange Sun 27-Sept-20 19:11:38

Winter is on its way, I always know when DH screams at my cold feet touching him when I get into bed.

Heating on, candles lit as psychologically I think they might add an extra degree of heat!

Bathsheba Sun 27-Sept-20 19:39:52

Heating's been on for a couple of days now, washed the bedding today and the winter duvet is now on. Looking forward to snuggling up in bed later with a hot water bottle and my Kindle.

I see flannelette sheets mentioned on this thread - I haven't had them since I was a child (don't ask me why!!), but I now have a strong yearning for them! I couldn't swap my Egyptian cotton duvet covers, but I can just imagine the comfort of a cotton flannelette bottom sheet.

Right, that's it, I'm off to do a bit of online shopping therapy wink

craftyone Mon 28-Sept-20 08:56:27

oh dear, Bathsheba I hope I am not a bad influence re spending on sheets. I am thinking about lighting my stove soon, I can regulate it now to a gentle warm heat that lasts for hours. There is no sun today and it is going to be grey later

Ooh merlotgran that is a nice fire. I learnt how to light a fire to stop the plug of dense cold air sending smoke into the room. Simple, heat the flu first ie make a pyramid and put a firelighter on the top. I use an electric firelighter and warm the flu with that first
