Argh my proof reading always fails me until after I hit the post button. Would it really be too much to ask for an edit function.

Jackiest Mon 10-Jan-22 09:37:31

Yes it would be good to be able to get rid of silly typos. even facebook has an edit button and you can look back to see what has been edited to show up anyone who changes the meaning of a post.

Having made some (uh hmm) embarrassing typos due to dyslexia and my over enthusiastic spellcheck which seems to change words as I post, I would love one.

It's been asked for over and over, along with other suggestions, but we're still waiting

Juliet27 Mon 10-Jan-22 09:46:21

It’s predictive text that embarrassed me….Zoopla became Zooplankton!! ?

Oldnproud Mon 10-Jan-22 09:48:41

Yes, I've asked for this many times.

Someone will be along soon anyway to tell us that we already have an edit button- the preview one.
However, that doesn't seem to work properly on my tablet, as despite previewing my posts, the big errors/typos/omissions only appear after I've finally pressed 'post'. confused grin

We have asked for this ever since I ve been on GN and it will never happen they don’t trust us unfortunately Even a five minute option would be great

I agree with you and a few choices such as 'like' 'laugh' 'cross' etc to respond to comments would be good.

ExDancer Mon 10-Jan-22 10:14:08

I didn't know there was one on Facebook Jackiest - is it for messages or just public chat? Where is it please?

DillytheGardener Mon 10-Jan-22 10:15:37

Juliet27 that is hilarious ?

Doodledog Mon 10-Jan-22 10:22:41

Another vote for an edit button, please.

Many moons ago someone at GNHQ asked what we would like to be changed or added to GN. An edit button was in the top three suggestions.

I can't recall seeing any feed back from GNHQ about the suggestions made ??

Must say it would be great- I type very fast and do make typos- sometimes mistakes too as English is not my MT. I should always 'preview message' before posting though. But an 'edit' button would be great. It could time out after a couple of minutes though.

BlueBelle Mon 10-Jan-22 11:16:27

There was NEVER any feedback muse we all have asked and asked for a few simple changes but we never get anything and that time not even an acknowledgement

Elizabeth27 Mon 10-Jan-22 11:32:48

Use the preview, an edit button is open to misuse.

Oldnproud Mon 10-Jan-22 11:42:41

Told you! wink

I’m another who would like an edit button and to be given five minutes in which to use it. More often than not I find mistakes having just pressed ‘Post’. If editing is limited to the person writing the post I cannot see the problem.

Yes a 5 minute edit button would not be open to abuse but would be very helpful, particularly to those of us typing on our phones! But mumsnet and gransnet seem stubbornly resistant to the idea.

Ilovecheese Mon 10-Jan-22 12:21:18

I don't agree with having an edit button. There is already a preview button which can easily be used to check for typos. There is also a function to ask for one's own post to be deleted.
An edit button would be open to abuse, goady or downright unpleasant posts could be altered later so that the perpetrator could claim "that's not what I said. Look! "

BlueBelle Mon 10-Jan-22 12:25:06

A five minute edit button works on every other forum I ve ever been on
Abuse can be imagined just by posting
Are you presuming there are never any * goady or downright unpleasant posts* on here anyway …dream away ilovecheese
There are many and they often stay on for days and days cloud cuckoo land

BlueBelle Mon 10-Jan-22 12:26:05

See I need an edit button my capitols didn’t work out

Doodledog Mon 10-Jan-22 12:32:28

A five-minute button would pretty much eradicate the possibility of offensive posts being altered. As BlueBelle says, there are plenty of 'goody or downright offensive' ones anyway, and one poster's straight talking is another's bullying in any case - what constitutes 'offensive' is often in the eye of the beholder.

Admin can see the edits, so if someone did post 'Doodledog is a big fat meanie' then change it 4 minutes later to 'I beg to differ, old girl', and anyone reported it, the culprit would be bang to rights.

NanTheWiser Mon 10-Jan-22 12:33:00

It’ll never happen. Mumsnet doesn’t have one, despite MANY requests for it, and it is open to abuse. I always use preview, so that’s good enough for me.

Doodledog Mon 10-Jan-22 12:33:08

goody, not goodie - see! We need an edit button (and I did look on Preview before posting grin

Doodledog Mon 10-Jan-22 12:33:19

AAHHGH!
