I do think once the Queen goes all the bowing and curtseying needs to stop. It looks ridiculous in this day and age and most of the younger royals certainly haven't done anything to deserve that level of respect. Far far from it in some cases.

I also think Harry, Eugene etc having very lavish weddings that cost a fortune in security is wrong.

No one has to bow or curtsy , it’s choice.

I've just re-read the whole thread rafichagran, so that I can post what I wanted to say and be sure I'm right.

I don't believe that there is hostility towards this woman, I believe there is hostility towards what her existence and that of the Royal Family means for society. Let’s see what has been said:

Our dear and beloved queen has been to hell and back, we are blessed to have her and she is irreplaceable. She has had an awful job thrust upon her, (job as yet undefined) and she has to be a symbol of unity and integrity.

One poster got torn into for posting what she thinks, none of which was offensive or untrue, and one poster seems to think its OK to ignore everybody of a certain nationality.

On another thread we’re told off for talking about simnel cake, but diversions to criticise certain former minor royals are more than welcome on this one.

Its unpopular to say that we treat the queen and her family like celebrities, but that is exactly what happens. We act as if we know them and their natures, and we talk about how we dread their passing. And that’s what you get with a monarchy where the members of the top family are to be deferred to in all things. But the world is moving on, and some members of GN are moving with it.

I think it's more that people dread the Queen, in particular passing because she has been a constant presence in most people's lives and a connection to a past long gone.

I don't think they'll feel the same about Charles.

Sorry, sorry, but it did make me take a second look...

When she goes it will be the end of an era. Which is no bad thing. I am not a monarchist but if you have to have one I think she has been a good and respected example and she has had a very long and mostly happy life. To mourn her excessively after such a lengthy reign would seem inappropriate.

I don’t think I’ve been disrespectful, I just tried to put down what I think in a few words. I certainly don’t disrespect the Queen, or her family, and I’ve said on Gransnet that I hope she’ll be okay and get to her jubilee. I would take issue with the fact that she’s hard working, and that’s partly the issue. She shouldn’t be working at her age, however small her duties. It’s wrong that it’s expected of her. She may well still believe that she’s expected to carry on, but that doesn’t mean she should.
We should be able to elect our Head of State. In my opinion it’s wrong that we have no say in our Head of State. It’s undemocratic. We should also be able to elect those who serve in the second chamber. The second chamber shouldn’t be filled with ‘grace and favour’ people or old men who fall asleep all through the proceedings.
Anyway, it’s a big topic. We have to agree to disagree. I would like to see fundamental reform but it’s not going to happen in my lifetime, I accept that.

I quite * agree Maddy It will very sad day when the queen is not here for me and many others. Charles will be a completely different matter that the problem. Even this month France, who guillotined theirs, nearly 225 years ago, but these days love ours, is having a problem voting for a President, where a huge percentage say they are making a null vote. I am going off the point from OP now.

Era ‘s always come to an end, gradual change takes place , I believe that this is preferable to a dramatic change.. I think that the younger Windsors have a better understanding of the diversity of circumstances .

She looks far less frail than a lot of people the same age, due to the excellent life and medical care she has experienced. I agree that she has been a hard working and loyal Queen but the institution is outdated now especially since the Monarchy have little to no power. Like many others I think it’s time to do away with them.

I think she has good genes.
Some of our relatives lived to 90s and even 100+
Others died too young.
No rhyme or reason as a couple of the real oldies smoked too.

I think the reason she may appear less frail than some is simply because she never appears without her hair and makeup freshly done and wearing quality clothes.

Our relative (who did look thinner after 100) always wore a shirt, tie and jacket with hair neatly trimmed and combed.

I will quite happily welcome Charles as king, I believe that he and William will shakes things up and we will have a much more modern royal family, a bit like the Dutch royal family

Sad to see an old lady growing infirm in front of you. HMQ has been an ever present in my life though I haven't necessarily been royalist. Do remember standing outside my primary school, lat 50s waving flags when she passed by. I think, despite her proclamation to serve all her life, that she should have stood down in favour of Charles a few years ago. Once Philip had gone she had lost her main support and it shows even though he had stepped back. I agree that after she has gone the monarchy will not be regarded in the same way. Harry and his (can't find a word for her) and Andrew have not helped.
