Sad to see an old lady growing infirm in front of you. HMQ has been an ever present in my life though I haven't necessarily been royalist. Do remember standing outside my primary school, lat 50s waving flags when she passed by. I think, despite her proclamation to serve all her life, that she should have stood down in favour of Charles a few years ago. Once Philip had gone she had lost her main support and it shows even though he had stepped back. I agree that after she has gone the monarchy will not be regarded in the same way. Harry and his (can't find a word for her) and Andrew have not helped.

Perhaps you would get a better response on GN if you didn't tell others to ignore whole nationalities and then call us geriatrics. Cruel? Nasty? Mean?

Even hospitals don’t call older people geriatric anymore. In hospitals it’s called elderly care. I’ve visited my mother in elderly care but there was no one even remotely my age in there. They really were elderly. Lots of Gransnetters are in their 50s and 60s, and some are in their 40s. Of course others are in their 80s/90s but Gransnet isn’t full of geriatrics.

Incidentally there are more gentle threads about gardening, knitting, cooking etc and quite a few about grandchildren. Perhaps they would suit more.

I too think monarchy is an anachronism and should be abolished. I'd prefer an elected Head of State - that way we are not forced to support their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and supply them with jobs for life, support them with palaces, servants and our taxes. Best of all, we don't not have to keep them in post for life with their children guaranteed privileged existences.

The queen has had a long, privileged and pampered life - much better than the average citizen living in the UK and commonwealth countries. She could have given up the post at any time, she has a 73 year old son waiting and a 39 year old grandson also waiting to do the same job!
Neither have held a full time job in their life and yet can live in unbelievable splendour as 'aged trainees'. However much the royals try to imply they are in a 'Firm', they are not 'working' - the occasional garden party, dinner, appearance does not equal hard graft.
True, most people are not still 'working' in their 90's - that is because many of end up dead before that from a lifetime of real work, seriously hard work and worry about how to keep a roof over our head, how to get our children into a good school, how to get to the top of the NHS waiting list, how to heat our homes and how to stay safe in retirement while hoping our children do not end up unemployed - despite their many qualifications.

How privileged are we to voice our opinions on computers, from the comfort of our homes with gas & electricity etc.
Who amongst us would give up what we have for those in the world who still live substandard lives.?
Let he who is with out sin cast the first stone, a quote from the Bible I believe, just a thought.

Ohh I forgot what about the 1000s of folks that they employ , ok for them to loose their jobs is it?

And of course that includes reporters & photographs who can make a fair old sum of money out of them.

Our next hereditary head of state has brothers and a sister. The following one will have (an) aunt and uncles. He, and the next one in line, and the next one after that, will also have cousins, nieces or nephews who, if they wish, could take advantage of the fact that they are part of the RF and so they will be able to stay in palaces rent free, if they like.

I don't know about some republicans not doing facts. But I do know that some others don’t do thinking about the future.
