So called jokes about rape!

AIBU to think that jokes about rape and killing women whatever the context are completely unacceptable and to women not funny at all.

Frankie Boyle, addressed a controversial stand up routine at the Latitude Festival recently in which he joked about raping and murdering tv presenter Holly Willoughby, he argued that the so called "joke" came within a wider context.

This is the context: in describing a game about killing and shagging people he included HW, he said this "I'd obviously kill and rape her afterwards, I'm only joking I'd rape her first"

AIBU, given the all too recent Sarah Everard case and the umpteen other women who will have been raped and kill by men his remarks are reprehensible. How is he getting away with this?

Gives animals a bad name

Smileless2012 Mon 01-Aug-22 12:23:41

No, you are not being unreasonable but I suppose people who go and see the likes of Frankie Boyle know what they're getting and his 'sense of humour' appeals, but goodness knows why.

Blossoming Mon 01-Aug-22 12:24:05

This kind of ‘joke’ was never funny.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 01-Aug-22 12:24:16

Yes, totally unacceptable. YANBU at all.

TerriBull Mon 01-Aug-22 12:34:54

I thought he'd scraped the bottom of the barrel when he cast slurs about Harvey Price, Katie Price's disabled son, but clearly he can go a lot lower, still the BBC don't seem bothered hmm

Shinamae Mon 01-Aug-22 12:36:39

Well what do you expect from HIM?

Smileless2012 Mon 01-Aug-22 12:36:50

Didn't know he'd done thatshock.

RichmondPark1 Mon 01-Aug-22 12:39:24

You aren't being unreasonable at all. I can't imagine why anyone would say such a thing or think it acceptable.

Iam64 Mon 01-Aug-22 12:47:01

No, not being unreasonable at all.
It’s not my kind of humour, I don’t know anyone who’d find it anything other than disgusting.
I wonder how Holly Willoughby feels about it. Could she complain to the Police? Could it be seen as hate speech. The worry is some people find this kind of thing funny.

Quote about the whole sorry affair from Frankie Boyle:

More grief from the Daily Mail. The joke they “quote” is garbled nonsense, a concept and wording no comic would ever use. There is a very long routine in my current show which concludes that certain jokes are probably a product of toxic masculinity. You’d struggle to be offended.

So unless any of you were actually there, to hear verbatim what he said, I'm going to take a punt on this and think its the Daily Mail making things up.

Remember when Jimmy Carr got all that grief for alleged discrimination against romanies? When he was acting as a character who says unacceptable things? As I said at the time, David Baddiel has written a book called "Jews Don't Count". Are we offended?

Galaxy Mon 01-Aug-22 12:54:23

I think that we shouldnt police jokes, however as FB whinges about others jokes I couldnt care less if that happens to him. Petty of me obviously.

volver Mon 01-Aug-22 12:55:28

What other jokes has FB "whinged" about, please?

Galaxy Mon 01-Aug-22 12:57:44

Ricky Gervais jokes. I suspect it goes back a long way.

volver Mon 01-Aug-22 12:58:21

Oh yes, I know what you mean. Thanks Galaxy.

They used to say “in poor taste.”

Kamiso Mon 01-Aug-22 13:00:40

He’s always been a nasty piece of work with a very aggressive attitude. I’ve always switched off anything he’s appearing in even if I would normally watch it. Horrible creep.

volver Mon 01-Aug-22 13:02:00

Shame.

He speaks really highly of you.

TerriBull Mon 01-Aug-22 13:04:06

What I have quoted up thread is also in The Independent and The Scotsman who have probably also taken those words out of a long preamble. In any event this person has form, lets not forget what he implied about Katie Price and her disabled son. hmm A fine example of toxic masculinity at its very worst.

I think we all know what David Baddiel, Jewish himself, is inferring in the title of his book "Jews Don't Count" without having the obvious pointed out.

Galaxy Mon 01-Aug-22 13:06:13

Is this my utter inadequacy with regard to Twitter or has he muted all replies on his tweets about free speech?

volver Mon 01-Aug-22 13:12:33

Ah, OK, so some people are acceptable and some aren't.

But you don't know what Frankie Boyle is inferring - or even implying - so obviously he's beyond the pale.

Mr Boyle again - from the Scotsman, no less: “Can I just say, my routine about raping and f*****g Holly Willoughby was part of a very long routine about whether or not it's OK to do a joke about that, and I look at it from both sides, there are pluses and minuses.”

Get out the pitchforks. Bandwagons will be here shortly.

nanna8 Mon 01-Aug-22 13:15:46

Jokes about rape are never funny. Whatever the circumstances.

volver Mon 01-Aug-22 13:16:28

I think that's the point of what he said nanna8 ??‍♀️

TerriBull Mon 01-Aug-22 13:17:27

Kamiso

Yes he said this about Katie Price's son, "I have a theory as to why Jordan (aka as KP) married a cage fighter she needs a man strong enough to stop Harvey from f*****g her"

A creep indeed.

Oh how droll "he speaks highly of you" like any one would care what that piece of work thought!

mrsgreenfingers56 Mon 01-Aug-22 13:19:51

Beggars belief, it really does. Truly appalling.
