So called jokes about rape!

AIBU to think that jokes about rape and killing women whatever the context are completely unacceptable and to women not funny at all.

Frankie Boyle, addressed a controversial stand up routine at the Latitude Festival recently in which he joked about raping and murdering tv presenter Holly Willoughby, he argued that the so called "joke" came within a wider context.

This is the context: in describing a game about killing and shagging people he included HW, he said this "I'd obviously kill and rape her afterwards, I'm only joking I'd rape her first"

AIBU, given the all too recent Sarah Everard case and the umpteen other women who will have been raped and kill by men his remarks are reprehensible. How is he getting away with this?

I have never liked Frankie Boyle. I don't find him funny, he makes despicable comments and dresses them up as banter or jokes.

Comments about raping and killing women (or men, but then how often do men "joke" about doing that to other men?
A. They don't) go beyond the pale.

I have never found misogyny at all funny.

Late DH and I used to watch panel shows with FB and he wasn't too bad then - not hilarious but not offensive either. Then we saw him on something like Live at the Apollo or similar with a 'routine' which wasn't in the slightest bit funny. We watched, didn't raise a laugh, DH said, "Well, he's just about offended everyone he possibly can." That was ages ago and it's surprising that he's still on the telly.

Of course he'll get away with much worse at live performances which is why I'll never pay good money to see him.

Volver OK, I have washing to do which will be more productive than this. But here we go.

You have openly mocked other posters for such as this. You once posted a list of excuses such as having to go out, do the washing etc. which are used, in your opinion, when they have no snappy answer to your arguments.

You have also been known to trawl back through threads and point out what others have said. I believe you said ‘sauce for the gander’ when someone pointed out one of your contradictory posts recently….

I have heard some absolute filth on stage, some funny and some not but I wouldn't want stand up comedy policed, it is sort of part of the fun smile

There's a lot of very angry and, I venture to say, obsessed people here, isn't there?

Not you, JaneJudge wink

TerriBull Mon 01-Aug-22 16:31:29

I love that "there's a lot of angry and obsessed people here" maybe, but conversely others will find you equally angry and obsessed.

Why is everyone picking on me?

If I cared, I might be upset ??

But it is odd.

tickingbird Mon 01-Aug-22 17:33:11

Oh dear ‘picking on’ people.

It’s a discussion forum. People post, others respond. Obviously the more one posts the more others will respond. That’s how it works.

I agree that what he said about Ms Price's son 11 years ago was unacceptable. I find it difficult though to hold a grudge for that long though.

Unlike some, it seems.

It's not holding a grudge
It is evidence of previous offensiveness by Boyle.

Mr Boyle again - from the Scotsman, no less: “Can I just say, my routine about raping and f*****g Holly Willoughby was part of a very long routine about whether or not it's OK to do a joke about that, and I look at it from both sides, there are pluses and minuses.

He's being disingenuous if he is pretending it is anything but a subtle attempt to incite certain feelings in those of his audience who may not understand the so-called claimed nuances of his nasty attempts at humour.

I have never found misogyny at all funny
Me neither.
Nor jokes about rape.

I'm very surprised at your defence of him volver.

No, we're not being odd!!

Rape has no place in any comedy routine, regardless of context , regardless of if it’s referring to male or female rape.

I think FB is a misogynist but I think it's a dangerous road to decide that subjects are off limits. Ricky Gervais does a joke about the holocaust, it's funny moving and quite a powerful commentary on what happened.

Iam64 Mon 01-Aug-22 18:24:30

I’m with GrannyGravy on this. Rape of any kind has no place in any comedy routine. I ve yet to meet anyone who has been raped find anything remotely amusing about the subject

Perhaps if it was someone else?

He has criticised Ricky Gervais for making offensive jokes.
However, Ricky Gervais appears to be much cleverer than Boyle so perhaps Boyle doesn't understand the difference between being downright crudely offensive humour and jokes which make people think twice about their entrenched attitudes.

Lathyrus Mon 01-Aug-22 18:31:57

It’s not actually a joke is it? It’s just a statement of intent.

No story with an unexpected ending, no play on words, no comic twist to an everyday event, no whatever else makes a joke.

The desperation of a fading career. Anything to be noticed.

I don't like Frankie Boyle or jokes about rape. I still don't want comedy, especially stand up to be PC or regulated. The whole nature of stand up is to test boundaries and the audience will do that job perfectly well smile

Callistemon21 Mon 01-Aug-22 18:41:37

MissAdventure

It's his trademark to make offensive jokes - Jim Davidson was the same, (and hated!) until suddenly everyone liked him again.

until suddenly everyone liked him again.
Not me!

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that.

Could you post the recipe again please Lucca

GagaJo Mon 01-Aug-22 18:50:11

I don't agree with Volver and her enjoyment of FB.

But she does have a point with this statment. It really worries me how much people remember about what I post. Is this stalking?

Volver, the answer is yes. Some GN members do searches, to find stuff from way back, to then bring up to attack members they dislike with. It'll only be specific members. Most wouldn''t do it/couldn't be ar**d.

Spinnaker Mon 01-Aug-22 18:53:53

Blimey I'd best keep quiet about going to see Chubby Brown then grin
