Often said by my mum if I was being mardy or moody or crying

I remember being told not to suck my paintbrush as the paint would make me poorly I was very serious about this and neve4 did and then one morning without thinking I found myself sucking the end of my paintbrush I was terrified I was going to die and I remember running to find my Nan saying am I going to die

‘I’ve got eyes in the back of my head!’
I was always looking at mum’s head but never did see her other set of eyes.

If my Mum thought I was up to no good she would say " don't forget I have my weather eye on you" I never quite knew what her weather eye was but imagined it was somewhere on her body but did know where!
Obviously it was her mother's instinct!!

I love lots of vinegar on my fish and chips and and was warned that if I had too much it’d dry up my blood. Not only did I believe it I think my mother did as well.

DS had just got back from a run and 3 year old DGS asked if he could go running with his dad. "When you're big and strong, we'll go running over the mountains together" his dad promised. DGS looked a bit worried, then whispered "but I might not get big and strong because I didn't eat my vegetables at nursery". Bless!

As a child I was told that if I didnt eat my crusts from my shandwiches I would lose all the curl from my hair. By my teens it had gone straight but I was quite glad of that as straight hair was fashionable by the 1960s. Girls used to iron their hair to make it straight.

I remember when I was about seven putting hot water on the bonfire because I thought because it was hot, it would make it burn better 🤷‍♀️🤓..

We were told if we swallowed chewing gum it would stick to our hearts and we would die. Also, if we didn't wash our ears properly, potatoes would grow out of them.

I was told the same. I had curly hair which I hated so always left my crusts and was disappointed when it didn’t work. How I longed for a straight fringe! Used to sellotape my hair to my face at night!

We were told our insides would stick together if we swallowed chewing gum. Later she said it was because she didn’t like us chewing gum.
I assiduously ate crusts in the belief that my hair would become curly. It never did!

One parent insisted that I never let her child sit on the floor as it meant she would have arthritic knees when she was older. I didn’t believe it at the time. Now I wonder . .

Our Catholic nuns told us it was a sin to cross the road at an angle. Their attempt at road safety I suppose!

We had big old Victorian radiators at school but were warned not to sit on them or we would get piles. I love nothing better than sitting on a radiator and have yet to develop piles 🤣

I loved Beechnut chewing gum and pink bubble gum Bazooka I was told if I swallowed it I would choke to death! So I didn’t I actually did as I was told which was rare for me I was usually argumentative.

A couple more:
“Don’t sit on cold concrete or you will get piles.”
“Pears are not good for anyone”. My grandma used to say this but when I asked her why pears were bad, all she did was sigh.

My mum used to say if you eat carrots you’ll be able to see better in the dark !

I had this only the chewing gum would give me appendicitis.
We all waited for the potatoes to grow.
Also if you picked your nose it would grow into a pig's foot,I didn't see many but as an Infant teacher saw lots of what wasn't supposed to be done.

I remember being told a lot of these things, but I don't remember ever believing a single one of them. I think I was born sceptical!

My dad used to say that my nose turned blue when I told porkies. I believed him.
