There is universal shame out there if we choose to seek it out, and we're all part of it, so rather than pointlessly exchange penance pennies for past deeds, wouldn't it be better if we just concentrated on making sure that it doesn't happen again, on treating each other with respect in the present world, and where those evils still persist today, on concentrating on attempting to stop them?
Good point. Apart from apologising that your ancestors were part of anything bad, where would reparation start or stop.
My ancestors had no part in slavery in the past, if my searches into ancestry are true, but even if they had, monetary reparation was up to them, not up to me. We can’t pay money to those who were affected at the time, because they’re dead.
If you were talking about something more recent, e.g. the Windrush affair, then people who suffered because of that may still be alive, and deserve reparation, but what sort and from whom? The government in power at the time? The people who voted for the government in power at the time? Any government who has had anything to do with the matter together with their political supporters?
