To Think That As We Age ...

AIBU to think that as we age we get bored with clothes etc., due to having seen it all before? I'm currently looking for a dress to wear as a guest at a wedding in August. Granted I'm a bit of a chubster, so choices are more limited, but I have yet to see anything that I've thought, 'oh wow, that's lovely'. Everything seems to be drab, or frumpy in my opinion, but is it just me? Is it because over the years I've seen so many styles and fashions come and go, in all the colours of the rainbow, and have just become bored with them? Or is it because I'm fat, and clothes just don't look as good on me as they used to? If anyone knows of any websites that sell NICE, brightly coloured dresses, for plus sizes, other than the normal ones, like 'Yours', 'Simply Be', 'Evans', etc. which I've already perused to death, then please let me know. I'm looking for a size 20/22 if that helps.

Grannygravy is right. Go to Sahara.

Hi OP , some of my friends order clothes from a company called yours clothing . And get some really lovely dresses . Personally I prefer dresses over trousers and skirts . Less faff and no worrying about what to wear on top.
I’m 64 and still love clothes , fashion and shopping. Currently embracing wide leg jeans .

Scarlett and Jo online have some beautiful dresses made for larger ladies. A couple of years ago I bought a lovely long dress for my daughters wedding. It has a very clever banding under the bust then floats out hiding bumps and tum. Reasonably priced too about £80

Reasonably priced 😂

Hi there
I’m far from an expert but I do love the advice of choosing 3 words …So Mine would be Feminine,Vibrant ,Boho so You would try to incorporate those words in Your outfit although I don’t always wear Maxi dresses for example but I do have quite a few Summer ones 🙂

Take a look at Merissa Murrell (Think I’m spelling it correctly)Her motto is fashion for the every day woman so ladies isn’t various shapes and sizes .

I do have a fun style Instagram channel …I’m almost59 and generally a size 12🙂

If you want colour...

My daughter who is your size wore one of these dresses to her brother's wedding and looked fantastic.

Doesn't have to be a dress, you could choose a top and wear with trousers as others have said...

I love some of those. Not for every day wear maybe but for special occasions. Thank you for putting up the link.

I bought my Mother of the Bride dress from Whistles. I know they go up to size 20, but I don't know how generous their sizing is.

I buy loads of dresses and skirts second hand from eBay or charity shops. I never pay more than £20 (absolute max) and sell them on when I want a change. I always buy well-known brands such as Seasalt, White Stuff, Boden, Whistles, etc because there is some guarantee about sizing and quality.

John Lewis do a couple of good ranges. I think it's Live Curve they go up to a 26. So do M&S, La Redoute. Quite a few companies. Good luck in your quest

I have promised myself that I will buy a Gudrun Sjoden outfit for the next wedding I attend. I won't do the whole layering thing but the clothes are so colourful and pretty and so good for matching up. I think the clothes look good on older women and any size and are a bit different.

Gudrun Sjoden is good for colours and larger sizes

Couldn’t agree more - not the cheapest but good fabrics and nice designs. And you are very unlikely to meet someone wearing the same as you!

Hi, I’ve just taken a quick look on Vinted for you. Plenty of “wedding dresses” in all styles and colours in those sizes on there. Worth a look and you can save a fortune. You can filter sizes, colours, brands, cost etc easily too for good browse. Good luck 🤞🏻

No, certainly not bored with clothes, I have far too many, but I don't spend a lot on them, go mainly for sales, charity shops and Ebay.

twiglet77 Mon 13-May-24 15:56:11

John Lewis? They have lovely dresses appearing on my Facebook feed lately, Phase Eight, Monsoon, Whistles…

twiglet77 Mon 13-May-24 15:58:06

If you’re willing to wear a preloved dress then Oxfam have excellent wedding and designer clothes, or Vinted and eBay will have lots of choice.

semperfidelis Mon 13-May-24 15:59:21

I love clothes, and I always have! I think they are part of my identity, even if they don't look as good as they would on a younger person. If I'm in bright colours and matching scarves I feel good about myself, no matter what anyone else thinks. Some very classy clothes and accessories can be found in my local charity shop. I think I'd look in those before buying new for a wedding.

Have a look at Sahara.co.uk lots of linen and cotton styles.

I agree re Sahara. Expensive, but they're 'keepers'. For something a bit cheaper, try Apache.

Emelie321 Mon 13-May-24 17:00:00

Agree with semperfidelis.Had to attend dressy event recently, but have been ill so no chance or inclination to go shopping beforehand. Dug out best black linen trousers, from back of wardrobe, put with trendy long sleeved top (£4.99 from charity shop, nice colours, skims over all the lumpy bits) then found matching silky wrap I bought for less than £20 from TKMaxx last year ( ditto re skimming success)
Received several compliments on outfit, too.You don't need to spend a fortune to look and feel good ..

Jannipans Mon 13-May-24 17:49:36

Try Gina Bacconi - Just looked at their website - They have a sale on at the moment - Happy shopping!

RosesAreRed21 Mon 13-May-24 21:46:20

Have a look on line at ROMAN they have some lovely stuff and good quality and if you sign up you get (I think) 20% off your first order they go up in sizes too

El73 Mon 13-May-24 22:12:03

If you look on the Yours website and find the London range, they usually have some nice dressed.

Sarahr Mon 13-May-24 22:16:34

My first thought is, do you have a nice outfit in the wardrobe you can wear? Perhaps you can add a new jacket or cardi to jazz up a dress.
You don't have to always have to buy a new dress for a wedding. Have you got a "new to you" shop nearby? I found a fabulous outfit for a wedding in one fairly near to us. It was a £750 designer label but cost me £80. The hat was £20 (cost the previous owner £200).
Otherwise, maybe there is a dressmaker nearby who can advise on styles and fabrics and make you an outfit. Have a lovely time at the wedding.
