To Think That As We Age ...

AIBU to think that as we age we get bored with clothes etc., due to having seen it all before? I'm currently looking for a dress to wear as a guest at a wedding in August. Granted I'm a bit of a chubster, so choices are more limited, but I have yet to see anything that I've thought, 'oh wow, that's lovely'. Everything seems to be drab, or frumpy in my opinion, but is it just me? Is it because over the years I've seen so many styles and fashions come and go, in all the colours of the rainbow, and have just become bored with them? Or is it because I'm fat, and clothes just don't look as good on me as they used to? If anyone knows of any websites that sell NICE, brightly coloured dresses, for plus sizes, other than the normal ones, like 'Yours', 'Simply Be', 'Evans', etc. which I've already perused to death, then please let me know. I'm looking for a size 20/22 if that helps.

If you want colour...

My daughter who is your size wore one of these dresses to her brother's wedding and looked fantastic.

Doesn't have to be a dress, you could choose a top and wear with trousers as others have said...

I buy almost all my clothes online from euphoriaboutique.uk

Bright and cheerful, a lot go up to 22, and many are loose-fit, so fit bigger than that.

Many years ago I saw a large stand-up comedienne who said, "If you've got it, Decorate it!" and, although it took me a while to be brave enough to do that, it's a great freedom. We (or at least I) have been told for so long to wear dark, "slimming" colours - if you're 5'2" and 18/20 (me), nothing is dark enough to make me look slim, so I'm happy to be bright and cheerful and decorated.

(That said, the diet continues.....😉😜)

On Facebook there is a group "preloved wedding and occasion outfits Uk"
Full of things you may not have thought about...
And people selling/buying.

I have sold a dress on there.

SeaSalt do dresses in larger sizes, maybe worth a look. Their returns are very easy and free, so you can always order 2 sizes if you’re not sure, and return the other.

Roman?

Try Popsy they also do alterations to their clothes so that they fit length wise - you just need to let them know

I still love fashion just not quite as much as I used to do! There are some clothes I love that are ‘suitable’ but many I adore that are not appropriate for a 67 year old! The trouble is my mind hasn’t changed from when I was young and styles that looked nice then would look ridiculous now! It is not helpful that I have remained the same size, just a whole lot saggier in body and face!

Have a look at Sahara.co.uk lots of linen and cotton styles.

I honestly wouldn't recommend Sahara, I bought an expensive outfit once which hung like a rag and cost a fortune. It went straight back.

Depends where in the world you live, if it’s the UK, I thoroughly recommend Kit & Kaboodle &/or Lagenlook Clothing, or if you have the skills why not make your own?

I’ve used ‘Taking Shape’ several times. For larger ladies. Have a look, there’s loads to choose from

I can recommend Taking Shape: bright clothes, and big sizes. An Australian company, a bit pricier than UK but lovely fabrics. Like Yours, check the size guide.

I'm a little bit smaller than Old Hag but always go to www.coastfashion.com for flattering dresses for special occasions.
On their website you can search on "occasion" "size" "sleeve length" etc and I've always been able to find something. They go from size 4 up to sizes much larger than 20-22 and I've always found that their sizes are properly proportioned, not just sacks.
I'm not sure if they still have their own shops, but they do have sections in department stores and have always been very helpful.

Try Klass.

I wonder if OldHag has read the replies that posters have taken the time to give advice Re her dilemma 🤷‍♀️

I'm still on my stop buying clothes waggon and simply pick out my favourite feel good outfit for weddings and all other celebrations. Works well for me.

icanhandthemback Mon 13-May-24 12:44:41

The clothes John Lewis chose for me didn’t suit at all but they were very patient when I told them what I thought looked better on me and they brought along a whole new set of outfits.

I’d suggest Seasalt on Roman Originals, too. Sea salt dresses are well cut for chubsters and look nice with a cardigan. Roman have a huge choice, but a lot more polyester stuff. Both do speedy delivery and it’s easy to return.

I think that this service is worth using, I did it once and found some clothes that I would never have picked out on my own. Also their fashion floor is laid out in such a way that it would take ages to find what you want anyway.

Charity shops are always worth a look.

Ali08 Mon 13-May-24 13:15:35

Peacocks usually have some lovely summery dresses etc, and they're not expensive.
Shein, online shopping, I'm the same size as you and I find their clothes to be quite a good fit and comfortable, too.
Yes, I know what people say about Shein, but if we all stopped buying from them their employees would be in a much worse situation!!

kittylester

Er, what is a dress?

Smart trousers, special top and a fabulous handbag would be what I would go for.

I'm with you on this kittylester!!

Last year I was the flower Gram at my g'daughter's wedding and wore a lovely flowing pantsuit.
