I think it would soon become a popularity contest, and also that people would stop posting if they didn't get enough validation. I also think the board would get slower if people clicked 'like' instead of posting, and that there are those who would delight in a 'dislike/disagree' button if we had one of those.
I use Ravelry, which is about knitting, so maybe you'd expect it to be friendly and supportive. On the whole it is, but there are those who get 'dislikes' for everything they post. I'm not remotely involved in the politics there, so I don't know the finer points, but it's clearly because they have upset someone who has friends. Human nature can be quite horrible when people can be anonymous.

Why do people keep saying this
(166 Posts)I know before I ask that I am being unreasonable about what I am going to say.
I don’t know why, but it makes my blood boil when posters start their reply to a post with ‘this.’
Why on earth do you do it? We all have enough of a brain to know that your answer agrees and/or relates to the post it is answering. It just seems a stupid and pointless thing to do. Why not just say ‘I agree’ if you really think it’s necessary?
I have seen this used in this context on mumsnet, haven't noticed it on here. However I think it is a good way of agreeing with someone on these type of forums. Unless the person they agree with had just posted or was the original poster, if they said ^I agree with x poster ^who other than that poster would know what they were agreeing with?
Because you would use the quote facility.

Sorry, Crossstitchfan, just seen your last reply. Sorry if I’ve come across as rude, certainly not intended. I really should read the whole thread before posting, I suppose 😂.
Thank you, Ziplock and you weren’t rude at all. At least you were kind which some people haven’t been. All this has rather put me off putting my own views forward, to be honest. I didn’t expect such a telling off from others. That’ll teach me!
Thanks again.m

Doodledog, thank you for taking the time to post. I was shocked by what you said about Ravelry (which, although an occasional knitter I have never heard of). I had no idea that there could be such nastiness in an innocent pastime like knitting!
It would be lovely to be able to raise one’s head above the parapet without being shot at!
I don't think Like or Dislike is a good idea.
However, Thanks seems to work.

I use it occasionally to look for a pattern but have never noticed Likd or Dislike on there.
Who'd have thought even the seemingly lovely crafting world could be subject to scams? Someone who takes a long time to design crochet patterns has had her patterns stolen and sold by a scammer under different guises.

I would say it is the verbal equivalent of a tick✔️ or thumbs up 👍 “like”:sign
This!

Maybe because four little letters is quicker to type than, I agree with *the poster above*.
Some posters might be in a hurry and not have time to write a fuller comment.

This!
Sorry couldn’t resist it but I do agree with you.
I know, Calli. It's strange. It's 'Agree' and 'Disagree', and is entirely unhelpful as it's anonymous. People don't know whether disagrees are about prices, colours, or what, but particularly on the 'off-topic' threads that are not about knitting/crochet there are obvious feuds going on
. The site is very US biased, which could explain some of it, but basically it's human nature, I think.
If only we had both an Edit button, AND a like/dislike then people wouldn’t get so upset!
Yes, you’re being unreasonable 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
if only 'this' was the one thing in life that upset me - not that it does, actually.
I could give you a list, but I wont.
I used to get uneasy when being served at counter by young ones and they say. 'are you ok'?
Not 'what can I get you'
🤣🤣 I'm over it now. Things change
Your post made me chuckle, but probably not for the reasons you may think…
It would be lovely to be able to raise one’s head above the parapet without being shot at
Indeed.
As many of us who use/have used this may have felt.
Errrrr! Must be going senile. I can’t understand what this post is about.
Is there an example somewhere….?
To be fair, I have been sarcastic on this thread, but it would have passed unnoticed in Pedant's Corner, where people regularly sneer at forms of language they don't use themselves. Sometimes using forms of language that will annoy others to do so
.
I suppose we all have things that irritate us. In this case it was calling the use of 'this' 'stupid and pointless' that pushed it over the edge into rudeness.

Hi! I started this with an innocent comment asking why so many people answered a post with the word ‘this’. Then all hell broke loose! You’d think I had at least called the king a nasty name, or questioned if there is a God!
Posting on here is a dangerous game. There are people on here who are absolutely lovely. They give support and advice and, if they disagree with something you’ve said, they’ll comment in a friendly way.
Others are here, it would seem, like spiders waiting to pounce on a fly! They can’t wait to make you look stupid, knock your opinion down in flames, and even ridicule you.
Be aware of this if you post. On th whole though, I love it but you do need a thick skin!
Crossstitchfan this ( 😂) has nothing to do with your post but with your ‘name’ . I have just found a cross stitch kit belonging to my late MiL and thought I might give it a go in her memory. But … it’s difficult as there are no obvious holes to stick my needle into so my stitches thus far are uneven. Frustrated!!

I agree with you . I prefer to type ‘I agree* or give a 👍
Thank you, CrazyH
Hear, hear.
You would have something to man abiut if your daughter was dying of cancer, weighs under five stone and in constant pain. Get a grip woman.

I read it as a more emphatic version of agree, "this" encapsulates all the points I would make, perhaps it should be preceded by "exsctly" for even more emphasis. I'm probably over thinking it though before your post it hadn't occurred to me to question it.
Exactly this TerriBull. I completely agree with everything you’ve said in your post. But ‘this’ says it all and to me, and displays a touch of exasperation, so ‘this’ makes sense to me. We all have our foibles though Crossstitchfan.
I can't say I've noticed it.
