Where’s my …?

Is this a constant question asked in your house ?

I think you are going to get a resounding - "Yes"!

My mother, who was Irish, used to say something like "Have you looked under the bed?" and when, invariably, it wasn't there she would say "Well, if it's not there it is somewhere else".

the constant question in our house is "Where have you put....?" as if I spend my entire time hiding glasses/cark keys/even food in the fridge.

There is a standing joke with the adult children that their Dad can only find things if their are fairy lights spelling out 'here I am'.

The irony is that Mr HPQ is unable to put car keys back where they belong, close kitchen cupboard doors......

Get a small basket (or more than one, as necessary) and keep putting the relevant items in it, if they're "dumped" around the home. This works (most of the time) in our house.

Where's my small, black handled knife is a constant one, here.

Tried that, didn't work.

It is infuriating, I suffered it for decades. But I do miss him so much now.

I'd struggle to know what is "dumped" and what is "carefully placed"!
Ii might as well put the whole house in a basket!

DH 'Well you must have because I haven't and I definitely put it there.'
Me 'I haven't seen it'.
DH raises eyes to ceiling and huffs off muttering under his breath.
Returns a while later with 'I've found it' still eyeing me suspiciously.
Later on DH 'Sorry I remember moving it now'. 🙄

It's in their DNA!

My mother worded it as "Has anyone seen my bag" and was "not amused" when my father and I answered, "Yes." Nor when she said, "Then why don't you give me it?" Our standard reply: "Because you did not ask for it. You asked if we had seen it."

I get this and is so annoying.
My DH will often say ‘where have you put my…?’
I reply that I haven’t touched it he then rolls his eyes before going to look for it, which mainly involves him standing in the middle of a room and half heartedly looking around him. I then help - which translates as ‘actually’ looking for the blooming thing, and when it turns up he looks rather sheepish admitting he put it there earlier.
I have told him before that I have absolutely no interest in moving his glasses case/book on birds/half eaten bag of mint imperials etc., but he obviously sees me as a serial mover of miscellaneous items that belong to him. 😂

We’ve got this system for DH’s important stuff. It works for us. Two baskets, and a box labelled My Little Garden Shed In a Tin that’s supposed to be for seeds, gloves etc, though they’re usually sitting on top. It’s helped - at least it narrows down where to look. The latest item consigned to one of them was a map of real ale pubs in Skipton, that’s been knocking round for weeks. He doesn’t like real ale, and we haven’t been to Skipton for 20 years. But yes, he wants to keep it.

I admit I’m nearly as bad when it comes to keeping “stuff”, but I do have homes for it all.

You need to be hard on this one as men cannot be arsed to look further than their nose. When asked this, I just say NO and do not move or even look up. He soon finds it. We all would like a slave.

MrOops has had over 50 yrs of me explaining ‘gently’ that keys, wallet and now his phone go onto the small basket in the hall, he has walked past it in all of our different houses, keys now go into a drawer (with all the other car keys) as it’s one of those cars that you don’t actually have to have the keys in it to start it.
I can’t get him to keep his glasses handy though, they can be (and often are) anywhere in the house, garage or shed. He knows better than to ask me to help though.

Yes same here, only I have to admit I’m nearly as bad ! Only difference is he does the man looking thing, can’t see what’s under his nose. I usually find what I’m looking for without too much bother.
I often say it’s why we retired, we spend so much time looking for things. 🙄

Our home, my husband's business function best on the basis "put everything back where you found it/where it belongs".

Precision seems to work for us.

My GS who is 2 and a half, is a fiend at finding things. He has found my glasses many times as well as my DHs wallet on the occasion my DH thought he had lost it or had it stolen. Have encouraged my daughter and SiL to continue honing my GS’s skills because one day his spouse/partner will be eternally grateful.

Mine is slightly different as it's my 18 year old daughter and instead of 'have you seen', it's 'do we have'.

My sister was lazy and when she had finished her homework would just go up to bed, leaving her books and pens all over the dining table, for my mum to clear away before laying the table for breakfast. The next morning it would be
“ Who’s stolen my Maths book / pen/ ruler?”

As a child, we had the left hand drawer in the cupboard. if you found a spare sock, key glove or screwdriver, all were chucked into the drawer. Every so often there would be a demand to come to the table where the drawer would be empied and we would have to sort it all out. . My personal comment to "where did you put" or "can you see my" is always "what did your last slave die of?" and if I absolutely knew where the items was I would say so but other than that , I would carry on with what ever I was doing and never leave my things to traipse round after them. Or more annoying to them if they have been very irritating I just say in a very bored voice ?"no idea" and continue reading.

'Have you seen my keys, phone, ear buds' etc is asked so often, that I've come to accept it. But, what really pushes my buttons is when I explain in detail where something in the fridge is (middle shelf, lefthand side, behind the butter etc) he cannot for the life of him find it! Grrrr 😤
