modern baby patterns

My Dgd is expecting her second boy in July. When the first was born I knitted usual baby clothes but don't think they were worn. I would like to make something for the new little one but in a more up to date style and colour. Does anyone have any suggestions? The first seemed to wear grey or navy tops with designer logos and jeans from a very early age. I don't want to waste my time and effort. Patterns and materials are not cheap.

Squares knitted on to squares as far as possible (turning them through 90 degrees) Then a triple row of double crochet round the edge when made up)
