Witzend - there is one method you can try another time. Keep knitting until you actually run out of yarn, then pull back/undo/frog (all mean the same thing) a row or two (or more if very narrow) and then knit it again. The yarn stretches a little as you knit and this can often be enough to make a difference. Works with crochet, too.
I know it sounds far fetched, but give it a go next time it happens.
