Aaah! Lovely to be given a choice, so go for what you like. I have been nana, nannie and nannie Carol to my lot over the years. I don't really mind what they call me - it's those strangulating cuddles round the neck and the beaming smiles when I walk in that tell me how I relate to my lovely grandchildren. Happy days sunshine

I went for Nana - because it is VERY easy to learn to say, and because my own Nana was special.

Congratulations to all how wonderful a new baby to snuggle...
I've been Nan or Nanny to all my grandchildren but now the older ones are adults they tend to call me Grandma , as Ben (21) said to me, it has more 'gravitas' Nanny.. I had to smile at the thought he'd put into my new 'name'.

I remember being so surprised, and delighted, at being asked by my Daughter-in-law what I'd like to be called so I opted for Grandma (as my mum was), as the Italian/French connection had already chosen. Anyway, as is often the case, it was our grandson who came up with his very own version. I am Mema. As he rarely speaks, it is very special.

Never liked the Nan/Nanny idea ...too much like a goat! shock

What did your daughter call her grandmother?

jeni Fri 18-May-12 12:33:04

butter my mil was Mema to my children my mother was mama. Me I'm granny!

Butternut Fri 18-May-12 12:36:51

smile jeni.

I'm Granny or Gran just like my Mum was to her numerous grandchildren but as whenim64 said, it's those enthusiastic cuddles that matter really - not what you're called!

My DG solved the problem of who was to be called Granny [neither grandmothers like Nan or Nanny] - I am Gaggy and the other is Granny - she started this at 2 years old. Her maternal grandfather is grandad and my ex who lives in Florida is Grandad America

My daughter also asked me before she had her first child. I was quite happy to settle for gran or granny but the aforementioned first child decided that I was grana when he was about two and that is what all four who can talk call me and, no doubt, the fifth will follow suit later. (The other half of my screen name is because my grandchildren are all in New Zealand while I live in the UK – but not for much longer.)

MrsJamJam Fri 18-May-12 12:54:02

I am Grandma, and delighted with the role and the name. My OH (step grandad) has been christened JamJam, hence my username!

soop Fri 18-May-12 13:02:24

I'm Nana, and I love it grin

granjura Fri 18-May-12 13:16:39

Very happy with Granny and Granpa for OH.

In French 'nanna' means something like 'bimbo' - so it just wouldn't work, lol.

kittylester Fri 18-May-12 14:29:54

My mum opted for nana but our eldest son could only say Anna. So my mum who was christened Alice but nicknamed Babs, is also called Anna. It's no wonder she is confused.

Our daughter wanted her son, our eldest grandchild, to have a grandpa as she really loved hers but he had other ideas and we became 'ma' and 'pa'. smile

nelliedeane Fri 18-May-12 14:54:24

I am Nanny to my GD..I dont mind the goat connection because that is my birth sign,my mum was little she got smaller with age,by my GD,my two would call mum and MIL nanny Brenda and nanny Billie, now my exes partner is nanny sue.....and to all GD's friends I am nanny P,and back to the goat connection my partner is called Billy so we are nanny and Billy smile bet you wished you hadnt asked now..xxconfused

nanachrissy Fri 18-May-12 14:55:50

There were quite a few greatgrandparents, gps and step gms when my first gd was born so I opted for Nanachrissy, Now even the grown ups call me that!

Just like to stress that on here there is another "NanaChrissie" and we get lumped together if you do a search.
I am the original one wink

Many thanks for sure we all remember our grandparents with many scots grandma was crippled with osteoarthrits in her hips(no hip replacements then) so bless she was a bit grumpy & whiffy!..but she was so interesting to talk to..she was a direct decendent of the McDonald&McPherson clans & always said she had a Danish Princess in her family tree..really wished I had listened more!

whenim64 Fri 18-May-12 16:03:47

pammygran that's given me an idea for another thread about our grandmothers' achievements........

Diddlyididi Fri 18-May-12 16:04:39

I'm a Nani - strange spelling but my grandmother and mother have both used it. I didn't put much thought into what to be called nearly 11 years ago when the first grandchild appeared and am now stuck! At least it differentiates between the various grandparents that my grandchildren have. I guess its a good plan to consult with others in your family so you can choose something unique to you. I always feel that the 'Gran...' words sound very old and wrinkly. Nona is nice - think it may be Italian. Sort of wish I'd gone for that, but I wouldn't swap my grandchildren or what they now call me for anything! Wishing pammygran a wonderful new life as a grandparent. sunshine

i hated my cousins calling my grandma "nanny" to me it sounded like a nanny goat and somewhat disrespectful ~ as an adult i discovered she HATED me calling her grandma and she'd always blush and tell people i was the very formal one out of the grandkids

i think nan' is quite nice but i reckon you should go for nana <3

congratulations **

Maniac Fri 18-May-12 17:04:08

I wouldn't mind what my GS called me if he would just call!
He always called me Grannie Mani

whenim64 Fri 18-May-12 17:13:17
