Mother of Groom wedding outfit

If the Mother of the bride is not wearing a hat to the forthcoming wedding, does it mean I should follow suit? I have bought a dress and jacket and was thinking of getting a hat to complete my outfit but don't want to wear one if it is not the done thing.
Can I have some advice please?

Oh, and ladies, have a great time at these weddings!

I went to a wedding where the invite said the bride would like ladies to wear headgear. I just ignored it as I've never found a hat that I felt comfortable with. Wearing a hat reminds me of school. I was the only one at the wedding without a hat. I hadn't realised everyone else would do as suggested.

You do realise that this thread is years old and was refreshed by someone wanting to push their own agenda. Annie's posh frock is probably long gone now, the wedding was two years ago ?
