We have Dgs4 (8) and dgd (7) here. Dgd was upset about his parent's divorcing 4 years ago. He loves his stepfather but sometimes has these wobbles.

I was hugging him and he suddenly said that I smell like an old lady.

I'm hoping it was perfume and nothing else!!

My current perfume is Aromatics by Clinique - suggestions please.

In my mind, old ladies smell like baby powder smile

Fernhillnana Fri 14-Aug-20 11:58:58

Thank you for the recommendation Daisymae. I haven’t bought perfumes for years as am vegan and don’t want to buy cruelly produced stuff. I’ve just ordered from Floral Street.

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 11:59:50

This one doesn't!
But my Mum did. She liked Johnsons baby powder. smile

Dior Gabrielle...had a free sample when purchasing another perfume, Iknow what I would like next!

I was intrigued and did some googling; here's the link to an article I found informative, from a reasonably reliable source:

www.nytimes.com/2019/08/08/well/live/do-older-people-have-a-different-smell.html

Old people smell?? Pah! Just another thing to make us worry and go and buy expensive products. Don't fall for it.
If you keep yourself, your clothes, and your home clean, there's nothing to worry about.

There may of course be perfumes which some associate with old people.
Personally, I don't care for perfumes. I use something cheapish occasionally, my daughters tell me it smells nice!

Go to the Chanel counter in any department store where they will give you samples to take with you to try at home.
You can then ask your nearest and dearest or fussy grand children what they would like you to wear.

What about happy by Clinique that's supposed to be lovely my daughter-in-law wear's that and it does smell nice in fact that's my go to present for her. And comes in a gift set.

I wear Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass. I’ve been told several times I smell nice

"ExD Fri 14-Aug-20 10:26:46
So I Googled it and frightened myself silly www.healthline.com/health/older-people-smell-different"

ExD - what is 'healthline', who is behind it, are their articles monitored in any way? Read the article from the NY Times (link posted earlier) and un-frighten yourself!

Well, I'm so glad I have never heard of Aromatics thus avoiding the "old lady" smell. Chanel No5 is my go to everytime.

Theoddbird Fri 14-Aug-20 12:35:14

Since I retired I cannot afford the prada or chanel that I used to wear. I now buy a light rose fragrance that I love

Juliet27 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:35:42

If you're an old lady you well remember Youth Dew...that takes me back!!

rosemarigold Fri 14-Aug-20 12:44:38

Yes Aepgirl! ......and what's this website called again?!

threexnanny Fri 14-Aug-20 12:45:13

I thought an 'old lady smell' was talc and a toilet water from Yardleys!

harrysgran Fri 14-Aug-20 12:49:06

I did wear aromatics for years but now i find it overpowering blue grass and Yardley esp were big favourites but like channel no5 old lady perfumes I'm informed by my DDs I now wear Elizabeth Arden Mediterranean during the day and Alien in the evening if I'm going out however I can very rarely smell either of them on myself after an hour

Kim19 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:49:09

Well I never.... mix 'n' match perfume. What a splendid idea. How have I become this ancient without thinking/hearing of this myself? I despair. My regular potion (which GC seem to appreciate) is Pomello by Jo Loves. Sadly I do associate lavender with older age but I have plenty of it in the garden and love it out there.

Veenus Fri 14-Aug-20 12:53:13

I use Clinique Happy all the time, it is light and floral. I found the Aromatics very heavy. It reminded me of my aunt who used to use Este Lauder Youth Dew. That was heavy and old lady type too.

JanT8 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:57:01

I love Aromatics but perhaps I need a re-think too ! I also love Angel , apparently that’s a ‘Marmite’ perfume, you either love it or hate it. My very favourite is Coco Chanel but too expensive for everyday.
I think a lot of today’s perfumes are too flowery,

Granarchist Fri 14-Aug-20 12:58:33

First by Van Cleef and Arpels

Cambia Fri 14-Aug-20 13:14:09

OMG I have been wearing Aromatics for years and years. Get lots of complimentary comments on it still, even though I can hardly smell it now.

Maybe it is old hat now....will ask my gd and GS when they visit this weekend if I smell like an old lady. If so, off to Jo Malones. I do love their bath oils!

Georgesgran Fri 14-Aug-20 13:26:34

I used Obsession from its 80’s launch right through to discovering Pomegranate Noir. Then a few years ago, I was in House of Fraser and realised I’d forgotten to have a spray before leaving home - saw the familiar Obsession bottle and took a quick squirt. Within an hour the girl making my coffee and the checkout girl in M&S both admired the fragrance, so I’ve stuck to it ever since. I think it must suit my skin, as I can’t really smell it in me - even yesterday someone behind me in a queue asked what it was.
Not everyone’s cup of tea, but often on offer in various places, so a win win for this OAP! X

gillybob Fri 14-Aug-20 13:29:36

J52

In the summer I wear Clarins Eau des Jardins. In the winter Dior Joy. But Kitty you couldn’t wear the same as me. ??

I love the Clarins fragrances too J52 smile

My all time favourite perfume is J’Adore (Dior) but it’s way too pricey for me . I also love Black Tulip by Shay and Blue ( my DH bought it for my birthday a few years ago because he like the bottle ) smile

paddyanne Fri 14-Aug-20 13:57:14

Prada Candy ,my son buys me it because my GD loves it and it and "It smells like sweeties"

Kalu Fri 14-Aug-20 14:11:13

Chanel Coco has been my perfume for so long and I hope it is never discontinued. A very distinctive scent which I spray onto my tops as it lasts longer this way than on my skin. GD2 told me as we were having a cuddle, she could smell it in a store one day and it made her think of me and she likes the smell.
It seems I have passed an acceptable Granny smell kitty ??

My first perfume was Ma Griffe when I was a teenager. The next was one I loved which my aunt wore, Youth Dew. In the 80’s it was Opium which always gave me clues DD’s, as young teenagers were pinching the odd squirt obviously thinking I wouldn’t smell it on them. Nice try.

Nonnapg Fri 14-Aug-20 14:16:20

Jo Loves “Pomelo” for the summer and Jo Loves “Red Truffle 21” for the winter.
