I'm considering moving. Anywhere in England & Wales is possible. Ideally, I'd like a characterful building, medium to large garden. As many bedrooms as 300k will get me. In a really beautiful area. I'd like streams/rivers/woods. Nothing urban. Maybe half-an-hour drive to a town.. Do you know somewhere that fits the bill?

Southport or Ormskirk have some lovely dwellings

Newatthis

Shropshire - it's called 'The Hidden jewel" and that is exactly what it is. Beautiful countryside, safe, medieval towns, historical, good pubs, lovely villages and it borders Wales.

Lovely but it rains!!! Go East for dryer weather ...sunshine

Try the Lake District. You might manage a garden shed for that price. It is a wonderful place but decent property is very expensive.

Monmouthshire is a very expensive area. I wanted to down size now I am on my own. Unless I want to live locked in on a new estate, anything that looks exciting is over budget!!

Justanotherwannabe that looks lovely! I’d love to buy that! Me? Not jealous at all.

BlueBelle Tue 29-Sept-20 13:43:12

I expect most of us would like that too

BlueBelle Tue 29-Sept-20 13:49:51

elothan I wonder where you ve been to in Suffolk it isn’t all countryside we have towns, cities beaches and seasides as well Like most counties there’s both but not all counties have beaches and we re one of the driest counties to boot and not an expensive area apart from secluded parts like Southwold Aldeburgh and Constable country
There’s my plug for beautiful Suffolk
New Forest is lovely but expensive

I have just moved to rural Suffolk to a cottage slightly over your budget, but only 20 mins from a large town, good road connections to a dual carriageway, and a railway station just 10 minutes drive away. The house is a detached listed cottage with 1/3 acre garden and double garage, but there is absolutely loads of work needed. I think it will cost me around £80k to get the renovation work done. My new neighbours are lovely people. In the meantime I live in a muddle but this time next year, and assuming Covid is waning, I hope to be planning a lovely family Christmas with tree in the sitting room and fire burning in the inglenook.

Don't forget that - wherever you choose - it will be a good idea to stay within easy reach of health care; some facilities; and neighbours not too far away who will know who you are (after you have taken the trouble to get to know them and contributed in some way to the life of the community). Also, public transport should not be too far away, should you at some stage find you and yours are no longer able to drive for whatever reason.
And if you choose certain areas of Wales that are predominately Welsh speaking, do people the courtesy of showing you are prepared to learn a few words. As some here have already said, incomers are often blamed for pricing locals out of their home areas, and as a result may not always be well received. In such cases you may need to tread carefully.

The Amber Valley is equilly as Pretty in places as the Derbyshire Dales, both are within easy reach of the Peak district national park, the big difference is though that you often get better value when living outside of the Derbyshire Dales postcodes when it comes to house buying.
Take a look around some of the World Heritage sites, such as Belper, Ripley, Duffield or further North around Chesterfield, lots of Pretty little cottages for sale and well away from the areas with a high flood risk which are often found further south.

I am on holiday on the Welsh Marches, staying in Ludlow. We are compulsive readers of Estate Agents windows and that list of wants and price bracket would see you inundated with potential new homes in this area.

The cheapest home we have seen so far is a renovated 2 up, 2 down for £125,000, in Knighton.

Jzpap Tue 29-Sept-20 16:01:05

Somerset? You must be joking. I live there and all £300k will buy you is a 1960s mid terrace with a teeny tiny garden!

Bluedaisy Tue 29-Sept-20 16:55:39

We are for sale but for £339,950. Sought after village (Elburton) in south hams Devon. Beautiful one off design built 18 months ago chalet bungalow, extremely economical due to a one off builder design. 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, all large rooms etc, just move in and unpack.

Look at small villages around Guildford, you could be surprised what you can find for the money.

kathyd Tue 29-Sept-20 17:31:41

nahsma

Get out your trusty road map and investigate Herefordshire and Monmouthshire: look at the A49 from Hereford to Ross on Wye, then the A40 down to Monmouth and across to Abergavenny and the A465 back up to Hereford, and the 'triangle' that forms. Unsurpassable views, lovely villages, Hereford still has 'proper' shops, as do Aber and Monmouth. Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham near enough for a day out.

nahsma My area! It's lovely. A French friend came to visit and was enchanted - fascinated with enclosed fields, narrow country roads and hedges. He had a wonderful time and went on lots of walks.

Sheilasue Tue 29-Sept-20 17:35:56

Suffolk or Norfolk lovely places and good house prices.
Weather is good.

Goodness me I must be the poor relative on Gransnet
You’re all very rich people

Justanotherwannabe Tue 29-Sept-20 19:04:45

A word of caution.
We loved the area round St Agnes in Cornwall, lots of steep roads and gorgeous sea views. Then I met the parish priest who remarked that one of her problems was that people moved down when they retired and were the life and soul of the place, but as they grew older they became housebound because the roads were too steep.
I turned down a couple of places when we were looking recently because the road to the shops was rather steep!

(Oh and don't forget to check the likelihood of floods!)

Juliet27 Tue 29-Sept-20 19:05:59

Wise words Cassandra - much as I’d love to move to the country I realise that being near to my GP surgery, Dentist, shops, hospital, buses and train station is wise as I age.

FannyCornforth Tue 29-Sept-20 19:06:22

Don't worry BlueBelle
I'm not loaded either.
And I'm not entirely sure why anyone would be so clueless about where they would wish to live...

I'm not rich, which is why I need to sell up sad it's horrible as can't afford much here near my daughter - went to have a look at the cheapest bungalow in the area this afternoon - ugh it was what I would call 'grotty'!

Kitchen didn't even have room for a fridge/freezer, that was stuck in the boiler cupboard where they had removed the wall and stuck a roller blind in front of it! The main bedroom had an outside window in it looking into the extension, and the extension had two curtains in to cover the bedroom window! Weird layout throughout, needs all the internal walls knocked out and redone completely! Also covered the front door with sliding patio doors to create a 'porch which must have been all of 2 feet??
