I'm considering moving. Anywhere in England & Wales is possible. Ideally, I'd like a characterful building, medium to large garden. As many bedrooms as 300k will get me. In a really beautiful area. I'd like streams/rivers/woods. Nothing urban. Maybe half-an-hour drive to a town.. Do you know somewhere that fits the bill?

The above two properties are very pretty and look to be in good condition which should be a major factor in your decision making, some old properties have hidden issues. Good luck with your search hopefully you will find something that ticks all your boxes.

As many others have suggested...Northumberland! If you look around the Alnwick area for example, you'd get everything and more.
Just please don't tell anyone wink

Beautiful Weardale, between Barnard Castle , Durham and Alston ....we've been here for forty years and love it .

Mine's just about to go on the market, but looking for £370k, expensive area and garden is small, but nice!

Chocolate box type cottage in AONB in the North Wessex Downs - 20 mins to either Marlborough or Hungerford.

Not Spaghetti some good ones there however it only takes me 10 minutes to walk to Northumberland some of those are a fair hike! ??

trisher - with you all the way

Too many cleaning ladies coming to buy two houses means higher prices for locals. Stay away please!

Where's Mary?

Are you rushing round the country following our leads?

Juicylucy Tue 29-Sept-20 10:59:56

I watch Escape to the country it’s on everyday in afternoon people starting prices are from 250k and they find them some amazing places, worth checking it out.
My recommendations would be Somerset just had week there and countryside houses views streams woodland walks wild water swimming in weirs you name it they had it in abundance. Or Ross on Wye stunning place again with everything on your tick list. Let us know how you get on good luck.

Dorset or Wiltshire lovely scenery.

Lizzie44 Tue 29-Sept-20 11:12:51

Monmouthshire - access to Cardiff and Bristol. Woods, streams and mountains! However, I believe that prices have risen since the tolls were removed from the Severn Bridge, so not sure how far your budget would go now.

Since when has Gransnet become an estate agents? This really is not the place for such things.

Leolady73 Tue 29-Sept-20 11:29:30

North Yorkshire - Gods own country and not too expensive

luluaugust Tue 29-Sept-20 11:38:20

Good luck with your search but with these requirements I am afraid large areas of the country are going to be closed to you.

Georgesgran Tue 29-Sept-20 12:11:15

I wouldn’t bother with Durham or Northumberland. It’s all pit heaps, cloth caps and whippets and don’t forget Mad Man’s Broth alias Newcastle Broon Ale. ? Its freezing cold all year and the local dialect is almost indecipherable!

Of course, we GNs up here love it.

I am a bit curious why the move to ‘any random area’ though?

FannyCornforth Tue 29-Sept-20 12:13:35

Northumberland is the most beautiful place I have ever been.
It's perfection.

We live in Leintwardine, in Herefordshire on the Shropshire border, near Wales. It has beautiful landscape, and a river with lovely old bridge. The village is quiet, but the village shop is amazingly good and there's a lovely pub (that does coffee and meals too). Ludlow is about 8 miles away, and there are buses.
There's a lovely cottage for sale next door to me,

Hope you find something you'd like. smile

I would go for the one in Anglesey everytime I have seen some lovely properties built from almost shells we wanted to retire to Anglesey but the grandchildren came along but we still spend a lot of time their.

biba70 Tue 29-Sept-20 12:40:24

Are you a driver? We have chosen to live in very rural part, but only because we have excellent public transport. What happens when you can no longer drive?

Cressida Tue 29-Sept-20 12:46:28

Another suggestion here for Lincolnshire. Some beautiful areas in the Lincolnshire Wolds and along the coastline. Most villages are covered by Call Connect on demand buses if they are not on scheduled routes.

donna1964 Tue 29-Sept-20 12:49:49

How about the lake district?

LondonMzFitz Tue 29-Sept-20 12:50:05

Frankly I'm loving these suggestions. So ... Northumberland, eh?
