Anyone doing ‘Sober October’? I can’t decide ... ?

Well, I’ve not had any wine or a G&T yet. So I can decide tomorrow!

What put me off (I’ve done ‘dry’ January before and once gave up alcohol for Lent - 48 days!) is someone once said it’s the people with a ‘problem’ who embrace this nonsense as moderate drinkers know they don’t need to do it anyway as they are more sensible.

What do you think?

Hmm. I’ve not had any wine today.
But I think I’m cheating as I’ve not told myself whether I’m doing it or not!

Avoidance tactics obviously.

Share a beer or glass of wine about once a week. That's it for us. too expensive so really gave it up when a bottle went over £2.50!

I did this about 5 years ago and found it a lot harder than anticipated, but I did manage to last the whole month! I do love a bottle glass or 2 of wine on a weekend and during that particular October there were several nights out for various celebrations. Drinking lime and soda all night made me just feel sick! So anyone intending to give it a go, good on you! If you manage to complete the whole month you have my admiration!

I usually give up alcohol for Lent but this year, three weeks in, I threw my arms up in despair and grabbed a bottle of wine as lockdown started.
Now I've started Sober October and hope to get to November 1st without a drink.
It's not fair to say that only people with a problem benefit from this sort of discipline. Everyone benefits from living a little more simply from time to time and giving their liver a rest. This is ancient wisdom that has been forgotten in recent years. Thankfully it is now being rediscovered.

I’m very much inclined to agree with you Urmstongran I have 3-4 alcohol free days a week but —seem to go mad at weekends— drink at weekends. Always do dry January though. I almost look forward to it.

Can someone tell me how to “cross out” text. Never works for me.

Maggiemaybe Fri 02-Oct-20 23:43:50

Two dashes immediately before the word/s, glammagran, and two immediately after them. It’s a bit convoluted on an iPhone, as the two dashes merge into one. So you have to type a dash, then put your cursor in front of it and type another. Almost not worth bothering. smile

Most nights we a have a glass of wine or V&T I find it relaxing at the moment as we can’t socialise and meet friends but each to there own!

We have a couple of drinks every night while I prepare our meal.

Watching Saturday kitchen I was surprised to hear that wine with a similar alcoholic content to mine is classed as low alcohol - dont know whether to be pleased or not!!

I never know what the ''experts" call low alcohol kitty. I drink 11.5%. I don't know if that's high or low.

Chewbacca Sat 03-Oct-20 15:29:27

Same for me coastiepostie sad And there's been many a time that I wished I could enjoy a drink, even just a small glass of wine, without almost immediately throwing up and feeling like death warmed up for days afterwards.

I drank two bottles of Sauvignon Blanc last night shock

They were the individual very small bottles.
I rarely drink spirits.

I probably only have a drink (by that I mean a few on one day) once a month. I can take or leave it. I drive when we go out, so that doesn't bother me. I've got a bottle of wine and a few ciders for tonight, as I don't intend going anywhere tomorrow.

Cabbie21 Sat 03-Oct-20 18:31:13

I drink rarely, but tonight I was nearly prevented from having a glass of wine as I could not open the bottle.

Chewbacca Sat 03-Oct-20 18:33:13

How did you get the top off in the end Cabbie?

I used to enjoy a glass or two of wine every evening but then realised that it was becoming a regular habit. Getting home from a stressful day at work and 'relaxing' with a glass of wine. Wrong! I stopped drinking any alcohol over a year ago and haven't missed it, in fact I feel so much better. I cut out all sugar and carbohydrates at the same time. Wish I had done it years ago, you don't have to wait until October.

Bellasnana Sun 04-Oct-20 09:21:08

Shropshirelass I know what you mean! I never used to drink alone, but since being widowed five years ago I found myself looking forward to a glass or two of wine at 6 pm.

Just recently, I realised I was pouring a glass out of habit whilst not really enjoying it, so I stopped. Can’t say I feel any different but it saves some money at least!

As long as you are not exceeding recommended guidelines, why does it matter how much and when you drink? Threads like this do end up with an awful lot of virtue signalling.

I do not drink much because I do not like the taste of most alcoholic drinks, do not like the effect they have on me when I drink them and I like still less the effect the next day. This has been the case since I could first legally drink. There is no virtue in that, the story would probably be different if I had developed a liking for acohol.

So I read this thread with interest for all the different drinking patterns it reveals and see no reason to judge others nor put myself on any high moral plane.

I thoroughly enjoy a chilled glass of Sherry with a cheese biscuit, or a chilled glass of wine on a summer’s day, plus a fruity glass of red with beef. One of the pleasures in life.

4 days a week I drink no alcohol.

Cheers folks ?????
