My hair has gone so dry and tangled these last few weeks.
OMG ?

I got Himself to take a photo of the back for me just now so I could see it. It feels so dry and tangly and I wanted to see it up close.

The first picture is from the end of October and the second one, just tonight.

No haircut in between & I can’t get to a hairdresser right now. (same for everybody I know)

What do you think I should do?
I’m thinking apply some products. Like Argon oil ? or coconut oil ? and wrap it in a turban to absorb the conditioner. It shocked me to be honest.

Any suggestions please? I’d be grateful.

Thanks for report Urmston pleased for you it’s working, good advice you got, I wouldn’t have had a clue!

Hello everyone!

After all your very kind inputs and advice I did promise to get back to you all.

This is my hair now after 3 treatments using ‘Aussie 3 minute’ very rich conditioner. It is so much softer and has no tangles. I’m really pleased and not anxious.

Himself took a photo. I’m actually surprised at how much greyer I’ve gotten (from the front, it’s brown from the roots to where the bleach is!)

Good job hair salons will be open, hopefully, from 21st April!

I intend to book an appointment in Manchester city centre for a decent blunt cut, probably about 3” off, and instead of the ash colour I might go for a warmer mid brown with caramel highlights. The ash colour is perfect when I’m in Spain as it doesn’t go ‘brassy’ but here in Manchester I think a warmer tone is more what I’m looking for.

I honestly didn’t realise how ‘old lady’ my hair shouted from the back! I’m ‘only’ 66y and not quite ready to embrace the grey just yet.

Again, sincere thanks to all who contributed. GN at its best!

I have noticed that a lot of my friends are reporting the same problem. They all colour their hair (professionally and at home) so maybe 'more mature' hair just can't cope with the chemicals? Is there a more natural colouring solution, less toxic to older hair? I have let mine go grey naturally and it is in better condition than it ever was when I used to have highlights etc. Though it is much finer now, do those with thicker hair have the same problem with colourants and hair products?

JackK Sat 13-Feb-21 20:55:53

I tied mine in a ponytail and cut it off!

My hair like yours is suffering - i have since developed a very dry scalp. The pharmacist suggested once a week soak your scalp with almond oil . It has certainly made an improvement to my head and hair

Thanks for posting lizzie but no, never had the courage to colour my own hair. I’ve always had it done at the hairdressers.

lizzypopbottle Sat 13-Feb-21 10:58:54

Urmstongran I haven't ploughed through eight pages of replies so apologies all round if this has already been suggested: Are you colouring/bleaching you hair yourself? Some home hair colour products can be very harsh indeed. Just a thought....

I hope it all works, Urmstongran ?

I must go and fight with my own haystack in a minute (I needed breakfast first).

❤️ your comment Calli made me giggle!

I noticed my hair getting drier as I got older (just turned 61). I always use a mask before shampooing my hair and then conditioner. But, and this may be coincidence, my hair has been better since I got a real silk pillowcase. It’s supposed to help skin and hair. Got it from Amazon.

It looks like winter hair to me. Dry and porous from being indoors, exposed to cold weather and in need of a product that seals in humidity. Porous hair has more surface area than smooth hair so loses moisture quickly. And if you are using a humectant type shampoo and conditioner, your hair is being subjected to attracting humidity and losing humidity due to it being too porous to hold the moisture, so it's attracting moisture but due to being porous, being dried out by environment. Over time the process damages the hair, making dry and then tangled. Think about hands when washed too many times become dry. It's like that. So you probably need something to apply to your hair right after its washed to seal in the moisture.

I am reading avidly in the hope I can tame my wild hair.
It's like a badly constructed haystack, apparently, according to DH.

Well, you lot have been pretty amazing.
I’ve read every post.
I really cannot thank you all enough. You’ve been so supportive.
Definitely GN at its best!

Urmstongran
To sum up - do ask for a blood test to check that there is nothing wrong which could cause this and

Use hair treatment/Argan oil/olive oil/ Olaplex/Frizzease/ Philip Kingsley Elasticiser/mayonnaise
But not all at once
Aussie Miracle/Hif/ Elvive/Notright etc
But not all at once
Brush/don't brush - comb with wide toothed comb
Tie it back/don't tie it up/don't pin it up damp
Do not have sex on a cotton pillowcase

Isn't Gransnet wonderful!!

Sorry to see you are having this problem Urmstongran. Your hair in the before pic looks lovely.
I have had an underactive thyroid for years and take levothyroxine. I became very anaemic last year , very dry hair, skin, pale lips, they were almost white, and longish blonde hair started to fall out. Could see it on the dark carpet. Had an iron infusion in November and felt better after a few days. It was so bad I had struggled to move. If you get your thyroid checked please get your iron checked too.
I had a lot of tests to see if I was bleeding internally but I wasn't. Still don't know what is causing it but the full body scan showed up something else so that's taking priority for now.

I swear by Philip Kingsley products. Hair thickening shampoo is very good also various hair type conditioners but the Elastisizer treatment works wonders for your present hair condition Urmston.

mancgirl Fri 12-Feb-21 22:37:08

Just have to add Urmston I also use Moroccan oil. It is expensive but lasts forever. Once tried to decant some to take to Spain because my hair does not like Spanish water. Sadly, it didn't survive the journey. My problem is thinning hair?

shirleyhick Fri 12-Feb-21 21:39:12

Argan Oil is brilliant just make sure you do not use to much or you will end up with hair feeling greasy

Urmstongran Fri 12-Feb-21 20:35:49

Nb. To the poster who pm’d me - I just read your message tonight and have to say TEN duplicate messages appeared so something’s up! Plus when I tried to reply it wouldn’t send.

“Good to hear from you!
Actually somethings up ... I’ve just had TEN messages from you - all duplicates of this one!”

Maybe check what’s happening with GNHQ?

Argan oil a small amount rubbed through your hair at bedtime works wonders

Notright

John Frieda FRIZZ ease does what it says on the jar.
Deep conditioner, miraculous recovery.
From the very first time it does wonders to my hair. It's in a purple jar. Try it. You have to leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. Let me know if it works for you before trying oils and all that. Karen

I’ve just added this product to my shopping list *Notright’.
Thank you for the recommendation!

HazelGreen

Sorry I have not read thru all pages here. Just thought to post about very dear friend many years ago who attended a consultant over her hair. She was a natural blond but it was very fine. She was rather cross given expense and trouble of seeing him, to be given advice of olive oil as a conditioner and fairy liquid as a shampoo.

Yes definite seasonal shedding of hair and perhaps linked to new growth. But I once had dramatic loss after several of antibiotics.

Interesting to note HazelGreen.
However I’ve not had a course of antibiotics, but thank you - always good to store information away for further reference in my opinion!

theprovinciallady

just chiming in to say Good Housekeeping did a test on hair supplements recently so you could google that if you were thinking of buying one.

I get your drift here theprovinciallady but to be honest I’d rather not take supplements.
That’s maybe just me, I appreciate.

Thanks grannygrandby for this.
I’m writing all these fantastic suggestions in a notepad for future reference.
Very kind of you to take the time to post that link.

Actually upon thinking about this discussion, all these great products may help others on here too. It’s good to have recommendations!
