(42 Posts)There may well be fumes from the paint which are making your eyes sore.
I would ventilate the house thoroughly- every possible door and window open and seek medical advice about your eyes.
If you still have the paint tins there may be something on the side to warn against using it indoors, or without protective goggles and an indication of the chemicals it contains.
Did you use it for walls or just woodwork?
You may need a professional decorator to go over what you have done or it may be that the fumes will disperse in a couple of days.
Google the particular brand of paint you used and look at the warnings, if you still have the can look on the side and read the warnings.

It would depend upon the paint ingredients. If the paint includes fungicides, I should think that may explain it.
Once it's dry and cured, though, I doubt it would be a problem (unless you touched it, then your eyes, which seems unlikely).
I'd keep some windows and doors open, for as long as possible, to ensure good ventilation, until it's thoroughly dry.
Just call the manufacturer.
The details will be on the tin.
According to the label on the tin the product contains mould inhibitors and they are listed and they say they can (not will) cause allergic reactions. www.sandtex.co.uk/products/sandtex-smooth-masonry-paint/
The warning is very low key, which suggests that any reaction will be minor. The VOC level (volatile organic compounds) is exceedingly low.
The Agrement certificate www.sandtextrade.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/1970/01/Sandtex_Trade_Fine_Textured_Matt_BBA_Certificate_Jan_18_2114ps2i2.pdf states that the fungicide is approved by law and no where on either container label or certificate does it mention that anyone using the paint needs to wear mask, gloves or other protective equipment - and it surely will do, if there is anything even slightly dangerous to human health.
I think just open the window in the room you used it in and give the room a good airing and everything should be fine.
There are interior paints that contain fungicides as well and I have used those inside withput any harm.
Just a question. Why did you decide to paint an interior room with exterior paint? And why did you do it without getting clarification on whether it was suitable or not?
At least you won't have to do it again for 50 years!
Open all your windows then get in touch with the manufacturers.
I don’t want to be controversial but why use exterior paint inside a living area? Was it a porch or something like that? I hope it works out ok & your sore eyes calm down. Lessons learned maybe?
Perhaps Msida you used it on an exposed brick or stone wall which may have made sense to you.
I agree with others that good ventilation for a week or more should help.
If your eyes are very sore then call your doctor for advice.
Msida
I did try and call the manufacturer but the li e keeps cutting thank you for helping its been a nightmare night
We've just used that but outside; I can't say I noticed anything but we still have more to finish painting so I will take note.
It dries quickly but fumes could remain so yes, open all windows and doors if possible and contact the manufacturers of necessary.

I used masonry paint on a fireplace in the sitting room but didn't notice a problem with my eyes. It was a different make.
Tha k you so mu h it was a terrible night because it was late when I finished painting and it was then that it dawned on me that I may have done something silly. I never decorate because I have in the oast been too lazy to do that but I don't want to be that orson any more and so starting painting
I really did not know that oainti g a wall could cause me so much stress
Because of the stinging eyes I called 111 just because I lu e alone and at that late hour coykd not speak to family about it
The Doctor Ad ised that I leave my property! and I had to spend the night in the care after trying to book myself into a local hotel and was told fully booked
So you can just imagine how Grateful I was when I got support and help from Gransnetetters Tha k you so very much I appreciate every post and read it through I really needed the help.
I felt much much better when I saw posts and reply from Gransnetters
An bit if an update
I spoke to two professional painters and they told me just to keep windows open, they told me that some people actually use e, terior paint for bathrooms and that I wouldn't need to leave my property for a couple of days and that was a relief but would need to do more research now that I am in a calm place
The reason I used Exterior paint was because I did not realise that it made a difference
Thank you to everyone that took the time to help thank you for ???
Sorry for the typos
I meant to type,, I was forced to spend the night in the car
Isn’t exterior paint more expensive? I still don’t understand why you used it. Surely wouldn’t give the same finish on walls or ceilings as ordinary interior paint?
Maybe the OP already had it.
Or perhaps is was in a "discount bin".
... I have some tins of totally unsuitable paint from discount bins!
No wasn't discount bin
I have said that I really didn't know there was a difference that's why I used Exterior paint
I just needed to go over a few patche's inside
My younger critical son always telling me how I am stupid for not doing my own decorating and telling me how his mother in law is brilliant at that kind of thing
My eldest son is the opposite and just offers to do it for me
Life is funny isn't it, hard to believe that two sons so different came from the same mother n father
Went off in quite a different direction there but that's wat I luv about gransnet I can do that
I hope everyone is having a lovely peaceful day Enjoy the sunshine guys while it's here ????
Msida * you are sounding very stressed- the house you don’t like, the effects of bereavement and I think I am hearing a less than sympathetic response from your sons. (Apologies if I am wrong there)
You may be trying too hard, so take your time, go with your own wishes - not comparing yourself to your sons in-laws)
If the sons are critical, tell them to organise things or at least ask for their help. Take up your elder son’s offer! You sound as if you are in a dark and lonely place- that’s usually when things go wrong!
Be kind to yourself.
My younger critical son always telling me how I am stupid for not doing my own decorating and telling me how his mother in law is brilliant at that kind of thing
Well, bully for her!! Perhaps if she likes it so much she'll come and do yours.
We're all different. I am hopeless at decorating probably because I dislike doing it.
I agree with MawBe Be kind to yourself ?
Don't do something just because someone thinks you ought to.
I hope you feel much better today Msida. You are neither stupid nor useless, you just made a mistake. I’m sure we’ve all made them as nobody’s perfect (except perhaps your son’s MiL). Any paint makes me nauseous, last time we had the house decorated we went away for a week., heaven knows what your son would think of that!
Msida
I don’t know where you live but if your anywhere near me ( Southend) I’ll come round and give you a hand ( and advice)
I never go long without using a paint brush ?
Pm me if you want.
Oh MerylStreep, how I wish you lived near me, I hate decorating, DH now has eyesight problems, so it's down to me and I keep putting it off!
I bet there is something you do much better than DS's MiL.
