DS1 is 50 soon (I know I don't look old enough!!!) and we are trying to think of a subscription present for him.

To date we have done (or he has had from other people) cacti, meals, whisky, online comedy, coffee and socks confusedto name a few.

He is physically disabled so physical things are out, although he has been in a helicopter, an escape room and that wind tunnel thingy.

He was an English teacher and loves modern music.

Please help! Thank you!

That sounds really interesting Kate, I look forward to your update smile

Unfortunately I don’t know what it’s called but will try to find out!

I was being told just last night about a gift which involves regular e-mails being sent to the recipient which asks a question about the, sometimes trivial , sometimes not. E.g who did you go to your prom with ? (This was bought by a relative in Canada). The answers (as short or as long as you like) are then edited and formed into a book which is then presented at the end of the year. Could be a nice project!

I have been bought a subscription for a magazine called Ethical Consumer. As well as being absolutely fascinating it's helping me make better choices with things I buy.

As an ex- English teacher maybe he'd like this:
www.allsubscriptionboxes.co.uk/bookishly/
The blurb says: "Perfect for fans of classic literature, Bookishly Book Crate is a bi-monthly subscription box that has a different theme each time. Each box includes a special Bookishly edition of a book and seven other themed items."
And I think it starts at £35

Stirrd is a fudge/chocolate subscription. Delivered in letter box size parcels monthly or whenever. Handmade in Yorkshire and delicious

There are various schemes to adopt an animal which provide monthly news letters, photographs etc. A gift like this benefits the recipient and a good cause.

Cheese subscription was particularly appreciated by my foodie son! Every few months loads of cheeses arrive to be tasted/tested. Or magazine subscriptions. If he likes classical music, there is something called Marquee tv, which someone gave me and my husband as a present for Xmas. Gives access to loads of concerts, ballets, operas etc.

A magazine subscription perhaps for something he wouldn't normally buy as too expensive per issue

A jigsaw library? Could be difficult but I don't know ( no do I need to know ) what his disability is.

If he’s interested in boxing a subscription to “Ring magazine” it’s printed in America. Look it up on the internet.

Just thought because of an email I have received. Is he interested in his family tree? I have two disabled relations who spend a lot of time on Ancestry especially during routine long hospital stays. Membership and a DNA test are what they did and now get messages from a lot of countries.

If DH managed a helicopter flight, then how about a steam train journey? Depends on where you live, but some of these one-day journeys look wonderful and they can include meals.

Maybe Vinylmoon or Cassetteclub subscriptions if he loves his music .

Hi Kitty, if your DS1 is interested in current affairs and politics and also enjoys a good laugh, I'd suggest a subscription to Private Eye magazine. It's delivered fortnightly, is extremely informative but also full of very funny takes on what's currently in the news. I have subscriptions for myself and for my own DS1 (also 50) and we find it highly entertaining!

Cheese tasting monthly from the Dairy at Settle. They will suggest a wine to match and a programme to watch while tasting.
Or a subscription to say the National trust /or Historic houses that has walks for wheelchairs and disabled.

A small gift to add to others might be a subscription to the New York Times Spelling Bee (about £3 per month)
The player is given a honeycomb of 7 letters and challenged to make as many words over four letters as possible. Each word must contain the letter at the centre of the honeycomb at least once. A former English teacher might like that.

OH bought me a subscription to the London Review of Books which comes out fortnightly.

kittylester Thu 09-Sept-21 09:55:17

Thank you Kate. I like you a lot. grin

MayBeMaw Thu 09-Sept-21 09:51:45

Just tell me when Jane and I’ll help you out!
Fortunately gin keeps (given the chance!)

JaneJudge Thu 09-Sept-21 09:48:08

We have the craft gin subscription too. I must admit, I have massive backlog of gin though because of covid and no visitors!

Sago Thu 09-Sept-21 09:45:29

Unlimited Amazon kindle and music.
