Smoke smell in apartment

We viewed an apartment today which was very nice although not perfect.
One problem was there was a strong smell of smoke. The guy showing us round said someone else had mentioned it too.
I couldn't see any evidence of smoking, blinds and paintwork were clean, which I thought was odd. Some of my family members smoke and there are telltale signs in their homes.
I'm wondering could this be a long term problem. Could anything else cause a smoky smell?

Have you had Covid? My DD did some time ago and is now smelling smoke where there is none.

I have friends who are waiting to move due to the house next door being a rental and various tenants have all smoked outside gheur back door, as it's a no smoking lease, but the smell has permeated constantly into friends house whatever the time of year and/or weather.

If it was recently decorated there could be smells left over from previous tenants/squatters. The smells could be in the floor or carpets, too!
