According to Michael Mosley it's the latest superfood - good for our brain and can make us run faster!

And relatively cheap compared to blueberries and avocados.

I really like it but have to admit have never cooked it from raw - I buy it the vacuum packs.

Beetroot

Oh, I can’t bear it.
I think it’s hideous.
I have a real aversion to it.

I have tried twice to eat it, but I simply can’t.
Yuk.

JackyB Fri 29-Apr-22 13:39:32

The smell, feel and taste, nay, the very thought of it make me shudder in horror.
My mother couldn't eat a salad without it.

But I won't have it in the house.

Well, you did ask.

My sons have discovered it for themselves after a while childhood of "deprivation".

Tillytrotter £1.25 for a bunch of 5 beetroot and it will last me 3 more days at least

£1.90 for five here in supermarkets, £1.50 at the market. sad
It was under a £1 for a bunch this time last year.

My seedlings are coming along nicely, thank goodness!

BBbevan Fri 29-Apr-22 13:52:06

Yes, and coincidentally I planted some seeds this morning .

Soroptimum Fri 29-Apr-22 13:55:00

Sorry! Didn’t realise the link would look like that !!!

I prefer mine boiled rather than roasted. They cook whole in 20 minutes in my pressure cooker, in just a small amount of water. I wear an apron and rubber gloves when I rub the skin off. Slice and put into a sealed glass dish with a little cider vinegar. Yummy

I have sown mine in modules this year and they are all up, no need to thin, the seeds are actually seed clusters and the roots push each other apart in the soil

I have some fresh beets in my fridge,am experimenting with keeping them like carrots, which I wrap in a t towel in a poly bag. I didn`t want the dye all over my t towels so have wrapped in kitchen roll in a bag.

I make a raw beetroot slaw with beets, carrots, cabbage, red onion and coriander, I finish it with a yoghurt and mayo dressing.
Delicious.

Blondiescot Fri 29-Apr-22 14:33:12

Sago, that sounds lovely, I must give it a try!

M0nica Fri 29-Apr-22 14:34:58

Love it and makes fabulous chutney.

H1954 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:39:23

Is there anything better than beetroot???? Yes! More beetroot! Love it and have it Harvard style with new potatoes and cooked ham.

Riverwalk Fri 29-Apr-22 14:43:43

NotSpaghetti

If you want the "full benefit" of beetroot (for the brain/BP/sport you mustn't boil it as the beneficial nitrates are water soluble.

So strange to think that nitrates may be good for you! I have been choosing my sparkling water by their lack of nitrates for years!

Well there must be nitrates, and nitrates!

According to the article:

One of the powers of beetroot is that it is incredibly rich in nitrates. Eat some beetroot, and something remarkable happens: the bacteria that live in your mouth kick start the transformation of the nitrates into nitric oxide, a powerful molecule with many effects around the body.

I love beetroots and grow them my daughter does too but hers are always better than mine.
I eat them cooked or uncooked all year around. But I can't run whether I eat them or not.

Fennel Fri 29-Apr-22 16:12:48

I love it too, but not pickled. just plain boiled, preferably small ones. When cooked, peel them, slice thinly' they should be very sweet. After all sugar beet are a source of sugar (I think).
When we had a veg. garden this was one of our favourites. Easy to grow, not vulnerable to pests.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 29-Apr-22 16:15:36

How lovely to meet you, aggie and Flexible Friend. I have spent a lifetime telling people ( to hoots of derision) that beetroot tastes of earth/mud, and I have, for the first time found someone who agrees with me !

travelsafar Fri 29-Apr-22 16:31:11

Love it. One of my favourite meals is creamy mash, Fray Bentos corn beef, pickled onions, pan yan pickle or similar, and beetroot.....lots of it. It is a meal we had as kids when money was tight. ? ?

Facing me when I walked into Sainsburys this morning was a display of vacuum packed beetroot. So it’s beetroot and orange salad this evening!

foxie48 Fri 29-Apr-22 17:35:00

I've got some cooking ATM. I like to par boil them, remove the skins then fry in a little oil or butter then add some honey and whole grain mustard or balsamic vinegar. Lovely cold with feta and walnuts in a salad or warm with new potatoes and gammon. I'll also roast and serve with any roast meat. I do grow them but unfortunately they are also popular with the mice so they often get eaten!

nexus63 Fri 29-Apr-22 17:40:48

i love beetroot but only the pickled one, same with red cabbage, i eat a jar (sometimes more) each week, my doctor said it was good for me, i have been known to sit with a jar of either rather than chocolate.

I love it too.

Makes the house smell lovely too.

CanadianGran Fri 29-Apr-22 18:32:38

Funny, I hated beets growing up. Mum preserved them from our garden, and served them in a vinaigrette. Tasted like dirt to me as well!

And then.. after having my first child I was served a dinner at the hospital that included beets. I was so famished that I ate them, and decided they weren't so bad after all.

I will roast one in tinfoil, then cut it into cubes when it cools. I will use this in my salads for the week. DH is not fond of them, so I will just add a few to my salad, not his.
