What do you think to Helen Mirren’s hair and make-up sported this week at the Cannes Film Festival? I normally think that HM is beautifully groomed and doesn’t look her age, yet has that edgy styling which helps her look younger and sassier. I think she went overboard at the recent film festival though. It makes her look older and rather - dare I say it - witchy. Nil points from me!

I think Joan Collins looks fabulous. This was last year when she was 88.

BlueSky Sun 29-May-22 19:22:08

You are right Kate Joan Collins does look amazing! I’ve been trying to find faults and flaws but nothing. How does she do it? shock

Kate1949 Sun 29-May-22 19:36:58

I don't know BlueSky. She says she's never had surgery and does her own hair and make up. Somehow I believe her. I know she has hair pieces and wigs bit still she looks amazing.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 19:42:13

I don't believe JC has never had surgery. I would like to see her without makeup and wigs. Or then again, perhaps I wouldn't!

BlueSky Sun 29-May-22 19:45:16

Most of us wouldn’t be a pretty sight first thing in the morning GSM! wink

I seem to remember someone writing about visiting the hairdresser and saying hello to a small wizened old lady only to realise it was JC minus all the make up and wigs.
If she hasn't had surgery I suspect that both her and HM have had a go with fillers!

Kate1949 Sun 29-May-22 19:49:16

She doesn't say she never has treatmenra, Botox etc, just not surgery.

Casdon Sun 29-May-22 19:52:42

I’ve seen Joan Collins in person, she is very heavily made up indeed. What she has is poise, she is very upright, holds her head right up to face the world, and carries herself as if she’s beautiful.

BlueSky Sun 29-May-22 20:01:04

‘Wizened old lady’ ? Charming!

Kate1949 Sun 29-May-22 20:25:24

I'm not one to criticise with my hair system, false teeth and contact lenses. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

I saw Miriam Stoppard a few years ago and she looked amazing. She’s always said she has always protected her skin which was like porcelain. She was much more natural looking and stunning than she comes across on tv.

Interesting range of comments here. Some of you have said that HM doesn’t have to please other people in the way she looks, which is of course true. I have always thought it’s preferable to be the best version of yourself that you can be, especially when in the public eye. Maybe I have little confidence or self-esteem, but I like to present myself reasonably well. HM does have a lovely figure and looks great in that silver dress, but her make-up is too full on and the hair unflattering. Yes, she’s in her mid/late seventies - why make yourself look older with heavy handed cosmetics?

MayBee70 Sun 29-May-22 23:26:46

I bought a black eyeliner pencil a few years ago wanting to wear what was the new fashion for wearing black eyeliner and I looked ridiculous.

Chestnut Sun 29-May-22 23:50:56

Yet Joan Collins somehow seems to get away with heavy make-up which no-one else of that age can do.

MayBee70 Mon 30-May-22 00:31:50

Probably because of her black hair.

DanniRae Mon 30-May-22 07:53:16

I don't wear any make up and at 73 I look stunning ....... mind you my eyesight isn't that great!!! confused

BlueSky Mon 30-May-22 08:26:31

A couple of weeks back I was chastised on here for saying a famous young girl was ‘plump’ (didn’t know it was a swear word), but it seems OK to call older people anything! angry

FannyCornforth Mon 30-May-22 08:34:02

Apart from the unfortunate comment about Miss Collins sans wig, what have older people ‘been called’ BlueSky?

Joan has the most incredible bone structure.
She ‘gets away’ with heavy makeup because every thing is over the top.
I’ve talked before on here about seasons - Joan is most definitely a Winter, whereas Helen us a Spring or Summer (probably the former).
The lovely Dr Stoppard is a Winter too.
What a stunning couple she and Tom made ?

BlueSky Mon 30-May-22 08:49:15

Yes Fanny the ‘Little wizened old lady’ caught my eye. I would like to know where the person who spotted her has her hair done, as I guess JC would have the celebrity stylist visit her home/hotel!

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 30-May-22 08:55:00

I’m surprised JC would be seen at a hairdressers without a wig. She would have them come to her. At her age and especially after so many years of wearing wigs I have always imagined that her real hair is very sparse and the contrast between the heavily made up face and the real hair would be quite horrific.

FannyCornforth Mon 30-May-22 09:43:28

Exactly Blue and Shep
No way would Joan been seen in public looking anything than perfect.
It’s a pity that the poster didn’t take a photo - such a thing would have sold for £££
However, I reckon that she has fabulous skin under all her slap.
I’d love to know what cosmetics and skin care celebrities like her really use.

Kate1949 Mon 30-May-22 09:46:11

Horrific is a bit harsh. I have no hair and probably would be described as 'horrific' without it.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 30-May-22 09:54:50

Oh no Kate. Not you. I was thinking about the contrast between JC’s face with the huge amount of makeup she wears, including false eyelashes, and hair that I imagine is very much like that of a woman her age (89?) who has had her hair permed all her adult life.

BlueSky Mon 30-May-22 10:08:00

I agree Kate ‘horrific’ is a bit harsh. Obviously ‘body shaming’ doesn’t always apply! confused

Peaseblossom Mon 30-May-22 12:09:52

I think it looks absolutely awful. Very unflattering.
