Regardless of being monarchist or republican, in these hard times who is paying for all the expense of decorations etc?
Most councils are really struggling, as are many folk.
The extravagant celebrations don’t sit well with me.
I DO hope HM has contributed-massively out of her vast wealth

Parsley3 Thu 02-Jun-22 09:02:23

Hithere

So there is a celebration paid by the people for a person who is not willing to pass the torch to the next generation and cannot be kicked out of her job

Doesnt anybody else see how nuts this is?

I do. It is a massive publicity stunt to boost the profile of the RF. By hanging on to the Crown I am beginning to think that the Queen doesn't think that Charles will be popular enough to keep royalists onside. The RF is becoming an endangered species.

Anniebach Thu 02-Jun-22 09:06:29

So the Queen has decided to outlive her eldest son ?

M0nica Thu 02-Jun-22 09:11:05

Extra spending boosts the Treasury coffers as every extra item bought will include 20% VAT (except food).

So the money invested in the Jubilee will bring a good payback to the treasury and make more funds available for NHS.

My bunting is up on the house for the third or fourth time since I made it, no waste there.

A 2012 study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research think tank, it estimated that each bank holiday costs the British economy £2.3billion through lost productivity.

In fact, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012 was believed to have cost up to £3.6billion. With record-breaking inflation also hitting Brits this year, the loss in revenue is likely to be significantly more.

So no, the Jubilee is not profitable. No one, except the Royal Family, will benefit from the celebrations. In many ways, it is just a slap in the face to struggling Brits who are barely getting by.

henetha Thu 02-Jun-22 09:28:29

Many people will still enjoy it though. smile

Anniebach Thu 02-Jun-22 09:28:37

We should stop bank holidays ?

Italy celebrates Festa della Repubblica, Italy's Republic Day, with a national public holiday on Thursday 2 June 2022.

This year marks the 76th edition of the annual event which commemorates the day in 1946 when Italians voted in favour of a republic and against the monarchy which had been discredited during world war two.

eazybee Thu 02-Jun-22 09:42:41

Yes, and successive Italian governments are so wonderful, aren't they?

Athrawes Thu 02-Jun-22 09:59:16

I do wonder if the RF actually want such an event but feel obliged because it is 'expected of them'.

Good point. I believe HM would much rather be sipping her Dubonnet and gin tipple than taking part in all the celebrations! wink

Farzanah Thu 02-Jun-22 10:06:45

The biggest benefactors of the celebrations are the government, so I guess any expense is worth it.
Bread and Circuses springs to mind.

I believe she has given up alcohol, for health reasons.

Grany Thu 02-Jun-22 10:24:35

Jubilee It's all propaganda PR for RF

Grany Thu 02-Jun-22 10:32:57

What about all the Jets and Helicopters RF fly around in causing the coast of most pollution?

And lobbied several times Scottish government to exempt from environmental laws?

What about burning land for grouse shooting instead of rewilding which would benefit environment?

The richest 1% are the worst polluters

Are RF Climate change hypocrites?

Just asking

Grany Thu 02-Jun-22 10:34:05

Jets helicopters cause most polluting

Oh no that’s a shame at her age!

I'm guessing that the events will bring in money to the country and boost tourism - all to the good.

I am no royalist but am going to join in the village celebrations simply because they will be lots of fun.

M0nica Thu 02-Jun-22 14:14:42

Grany. There is more to life than money and materialism. I am sure the CBI could make an economic argument for us all working 24/7/365(6) by pointing out the value of theproducttivity because we do not work like that.

I have just been seeing all the people around Buckingham Palace to day, I have a leaflet telling me everything that is going on in my village and trying to decide which to support and which to miss.

The roads are full of cars, forgetting the environment issues, the duty going to the treasury from all that fuel consumed is large. Shops are open and selling barbecue food as if it is going out of fashion.

Your estimates of the cost of the Jubilee are exagerated. As other people have said, if you listen to the programme 'More or Less', on R4 this week, still available as a pod cast, you will find that the actual cost is about £1.00 per head of population.

I never thought of you as a right-wing Conservative supporter of the most extreme kind, but in your last post, your mask has slipped and we see the real you, a female equivalent of Mr Gradgrind, Scrooge and Malvolio all rolled.
into one. 'Christmas? bah humbug', 'no more cakes and ale'
And Mr Gradgrind? His name is now used generically to refer to someone who is hard and only concerned with cold facts and numbers.

Happiness?, laughter? and pleasure? a waste of time that takes people away from the great purpose in life; to work and toil unremittingly and earn money for other people.

Luckygirl3 Thu 02-Jun-22 14:15:13

I too find the idea that national celebrations should include weapons of war and gun salutes more than weird - a bit sick really!

We just had a lovely happy and pleasant morning involving being in our fabulous landscape. We laughed a lot eating ice cream outside and I found out about a local from this area who won the VC saving men from a fishing boat during WW1.

No Queens in sight. It was grand.

M0nica Thu 02-Jun-22 14:29:57

volver glad you had a lovely morning, but what has the quote above it got to do with it?

The post it was taken from made no mention of the jubilee nor did it refer to it. it was a response to another post where someone expressed some shocking right wing views to any reduction of time spent by workers other than in endless unremitting labour.

jaylucy Thu 02-Jun-22 14:30:48

Most of the community decorations in many villages have been used and re used a few times already. If new has been purchased , it will no doubt be stored away for the next celebration or big village event.
I think that we have all become so insular since Covid, that it's a great chance to get out and meet either people that you haven't seen since before or new people to get to know.
After all, if it was your granny's big birthday / anniversary, would you be sitting on your hands , grumbling about the cost of everything ?
I guess you didn't see the time when people have been interviewed from the Mall and how many people were visitors from overseas? I assume that they will be spending while they are here and possibly supporting UK businesses?

nadateturbe Thu 02-Jun-22 14:39:27

£1.00 per head of population.

£67m that could be put to better use.

A day of celebrations might lift folk for one day, but their financial problems will still be there tomorrow.

Grany's last post was mainly about helicopters and avoiding environmental duties, and the one before that was about a republican country and how it celebrates, and you compared her to an extreme right winger who doesn't want people to enjoy themselves.

Not only is that a non sequitur, but I was showing that you can have a lovely time without long-living queens.

I'm with you Grany and an earlier post about waiting for a biopsy result that would take longer because of another bank holiday. What is the matter with this country?? On the one hand we have poverty, food banks, hungry children, massive backlog of people waiting for NHS treatments and a useless verging on criminal government, on the other we have a woman who has never even run her own bath standing on a balcony overseeing a massive waste of money and a sycophantic public for whom this is a good excuse to eat and drink the Jubilee marketing tat. It is patronising in the extreme to be told that this farce will cheer us all up after the pandemic. It's akin to "let them eat cake" !!
