Two of the biggest French TV channels bought the rights for the whole 4 hours with no advertising. Other counties look on in envy at the continuity of the Queen in the UK.

Cost of Jubilee
(117 Posts)Regardless of being monarchist or republican, in these hard times who is paying for all the expense of decorations etc?
Most councils are really struggling, as are many folk.
The extravagant celebrations don’t sit well with me.
I DO hope HM has contributed-massively out of her vast wealth
Great post buffyfly9.
We bought a full size Union Flag fro the VE celebrations plus some bunting; all this was put safely away and is now out of storage and trimming up our front garden etc.
However, bunting is so cheap and easy to make I would have simply made some had I not already got enough; I was also happy to make some for the neighbours but sadly everyone wants something for nothing these days and they weren't prepared to pay for the actual fabric even though I said I wouldn't charge for my time. Sorry folks, I aim not bank rolling anyone!
Thanks nadateturbe! I liked yours as well.
I wonder why people assume “ other countries look in envy” at the jubilee, monarchy etc. Ok they like to have a gawp and print stuff in the likes of Hello magazine along with stories about the Princesses of Monaco, the Beckenham etc but if they really were that envious they’d just copy it. France has a pretty spectacular display at their Presidential swearing in or whatever they call it, it was on our TV news . Our TV had live coverage of the US presidents inauguration, I watched Obamas one, but just out of interest not out of “envy”.

I too find the idea that national celebrations should include weapons of war and gun salutes more than weird - a bit sick really!
I agree! Quite baffling, and not even good to look at. What could be uglier than a bomber?
I quite enjoy the toy soldiers in their red tunics and bearskins, but I know that’s hypocritical of me.
Actually France had the longest ever reigning monarch - I think it was Louis X1V(?) So Liz has only to hang on about 3 more years to get that record.

Great post buffyfly9.
Agree

I'm with you Grany and an earlier post about waiting for a biopsy result that would take longer because of another bank holiday. What is the matter with this country?? On the one hand we have poverty, food banks, hungry children, massive backlog of people waiting for NHS treatments and a useless verging on criminal government, on the other we have a woman who has never even run her own bath standing on a balcony overseeing a massive waste of money and a sycophantic public for whom this is a good excuse to eat and drink the Jubilee marketing tat. It is patronising in the extreme to be told that this farce will cheer us all up after the pandemic. It's akin to "let them eat cake" !!
If you bothered to watch any of the coverage you would have seen for yourself today that it has cheered an awful lot of people up.
London is heaving, it is looking splendid, tills are ringing, children are laughing, the sun is shining.
Schools have been having Jubilee themed lunches, tea parties, red/white/blue dress up days. Neighbours and families are getting together.
After two years of Covid, this is a fabulous boost to the U.K., to the economy and to a lot of peoples well being.
There are communities all over the country having a good get together. Those who don't want to enjoy it will, no doubt, be enjoying bringing everyone else down. That seems to be their raison d'être.
If you bothered to watch any of the coverage you would have seen for yourself today that it has cheered an awful lot of people up.
For a very short time. As I said their problems will still be there tomorrow.

and ... Do you think you making that remark puts people in any better position by reminding them on a day they could well be getting a break from their worries?
Our town was full of good humoured people today. People spending money in the local businesses that have struggled for the last two years. The market traders were doing a thriving trade. Many enjoyed themselves listening to a brass band, sat by the bandstand at the river side which wouldn't cost them anything. Why do you want to make them feel down and depressed?
A day of celebrations might lift folk for one day, but their financial problems will still be there tomorrow.
And cancel Christmas, while you’re about it!
I cannot remember there ever being such polarisation over a royal event so this has everything to do with the cost of living crisis. I am not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination but I am happy to accept the BBC’s More or Less explanation that taxpayer expenditure on the Jubilee has cost every household something between £1 and £2.50. Considering the Office for Budget Responsibility have estimated that Brexit is costing every person £1200 (so far) the cost of the Jubilee is piddly. More worrying is the GDP loss for the four day holiday estimated at £2.5bn but again Brexit GDP loss is running at around £200bn.
There are lot of things classed as entertainment that I am not interested in but I still have to pay taxes towards. It costs £8million a year to police football matches in London alone, paid for out of the public purse. I watched cat kicker Kurt Zouma being surrounded by police as he left court. Again paid for by taxpayers.
I met a friend for lunch today. A small family-run village cafe which just happened to be in the flight path of the vintage planes and Red Arrows heading for London. A big crowd on the village green to watch this and many came to spend money in the cafe afterwards. We eat there often but I have never seen it so busy which was great for the owners. .. although not great for us as they ran out of cake!

So no fun for a few days?
Not having theses celebrations would not mean that the poorest in society would be less poor.

I don't agree. I also bet those waving the poverty flag are rarely those suffering themselves. I think it is a Brexit leftover. All those folks who just wanted to argue for the sake of thinking they are cleverer than they are, are still trying to "win" another argument. Everyone else is getting on and enjoying themselves. Do you really think they will listen to the Jubilee Grinches? The Grinches will generally just talk to one another and enjoy their misery.
This tells me it's time to stop indulging people and allowing them to think their opinion matters to anyone but themselves. This is one of those times when I wish I could "ignore" a whole thread.
Totally agree DaisyAnne
I’ve just looked back to Gransnet posts in 2012 about the jubilee then, and posters comments then. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

It would if the money was given to them instead.
It's simple to understand.
One young boy on the programme I'm watching was asked why he loved the Queen.
He replied Because she's very helpful. Hmm.
nadateturbe it’s also simple to understand that joy comes in many forms.
So if one doesn't celebrate the jubilee, one is miserable.
I'm not miserable, I just happen to care about people.
My opinion matters as much as yours Daisyanne
I agree DaisyAnne. It’s just four days. There is a public cost from but, as More or Less explained, it’s around £1 - £2.50 per household.
Here in Republican Corner, I have just answered a knock on the door. The five year old girl from a few doors along had given me a hand-decorated invitation replete with stickers of princesses, starfish, stars and unicorns asking if I will please come to her party for the Queen on Saturday. There will be cake and trifle and Daddy’s home-made beer. How can I refuse?

No if you do not want to celebrate that us down to you, but there is absolutely no need to be so down and disparaging on those who do whatever their financial situation may be.
If you read Newquay's post you will see what I am answering.
And I am entitled to post.
My OH is playing at a party tomorrow and will donate his fee straight back to the local food bank.
And I'm off now!
