DaisyAnne it was certainly not my intention to bring any group alongside. These costs or gains are hard to measure, not living in the UK I am unaware of any discussion. The pomp and ceremony is part of how visitors see the culture of your country.

We could already be using them in our communities. As far as I can see, they are the only way the truth can compete with the drivel we get from the likes of the DM and its repetition, as if it is a truth, on forums such as GN.

Not sure if this is what is being referred to, but have seen a picture of Meghan and Harry being driven to the parade yesterday, and Meghan has opened her car window so she can be seen more clearly by the crowds. Harry apparently not so keen. Meghan not too worried about any security lapses it seems, happy to risk undoing the bullet proof window. (Well, I assume it was bullet proof).

It is so interesting reading some of these comments, I am borderline Republican but until and unless there is a viable alternative, we should stick with what we have. Tax payers money was not used for these celebrations and if people want to enjoy those celebrations, I’m fine with that. I will be missing the Jubilee thing in my village but I’m not sad about that. What I am agitated and cross about this morning is the absolute rubbish written about H&M in the Daily Fail today.

I've just seen the DM headlines today - to the effect that a poll suggests the RF will be seriously discredited by the Queen allowing Harry and Meghan to join the Jubilee celebrations.

The whole notion of being subservient to an individual who by an accident of birth is born into a family revered as having a divine right, is absurd.

But the fact remains that the Queen is still a human being and she has a family, and if she wants her grandson to be part of her 'last Hurrah', then for goodness' sake, what is the problem? Harry and Meghan are a totally self-absorbed couple and they've shown themselves to be immature and thoughtless on occasions... but they haven't murdered anyone, nor started a war. Can people not save their fury and anger for something more important?

All those who profess to "love our Queen" and are now pursing their lips in vinegary disapproval... can't you just give the woman a bloody break? The prodigal Harry is her grandson, he's family, she probably loves him. You might even have the same imprudent profligates in your own family.

I don't even know why, as a borderline Republican also, I feel so antagonised by the Daily Mail's fire-stoking. I'm feeling 'the rage', but not in the way they want it to be manipulated.

1. It's not a fixation. If you read a couple of articles from it on Facebook, it will then regularly appear on your feed.

2. The Daily Mail stirs the pot - you'd have to be blind not to notice.

3. I read The Tines, The Spectator, The Independent, The Guardian - and sometimes the English language editions of the international press - and one in its native language.

I'm glad for HM that she is being spared the ordeal of the service at St Pauls. Imagine sitting through the service that celebrates (or commemorates?) her reign. It would be like attending her own funeral. I wonder if she will be watching it on TV.

Regardless of being monarchist or republican, in these hard times who is paying for all the expense of decorations etc?
Most councils are really struggling, as are many folk.
The extravagant celebrations don’t sit well with me.

This thread has run its course regarding the questions asked in the OP. So my conclusion would be:

Having the Jubilee is not the reason the councils are struggling.

Having the Jubilee has not made people poor.

If you don't like the celebrations, you are totally at liberty to opt out. You don't need to have anything to do with them.

Most of the celebrations have been organised and funded locally by communities. Most of them were by volunteers who gave their time and money. That is not extravegance.

The larger celebrations are an investment in tourism. The result far outweighs the investment. Many of them cost less than a local football match to put on. That is not extravegance.

I doubt we will ever know if the Queen has contributed but in what other job would you be expected to pay for doing it?

My conclusion would be, wherever the money comes from it doesn't sit well with me.

Queen's Jubilee: Glasgow councillors say using public money would be crass

SNP council deputy leader and city treasurer Ricky Bell said: “In the current financial restraints that Glasgow City faces, spending money on a jubilee celebration would in my opinion be crass, I want to direct every penny we can to helping with the cost of living crisis.”
Green councillor Anthony Carrolll said he would like to see Glasgow’s communities and their history celebrated more instead – pointing to the Kenmure Street Festival of Resistance and the Govanhill International Festival.
He said: “We should be celebrating Glaswegians and our history. As a city we have proud moments. There is a lot we should promote more.”

Defending Glasgow’s absence of events online, Green councillor Leodhas Massie said: “To set aside even a penny of Glasgow City Council’s budget for this during a chronic cost of living crisis would be sickeningly offensive. You are free to celebrate this ‘tradition’ at your own expense if you feel like you want to.”

I loved Glasgow before. I love them even more now.
