Daughter in debt

Hi ladies.
I need some good advice about my daughter. I discovered yesterday that she has been gambling. I am worried sick as she asked me to make a payment for her. She asked me to give her my bank details on line as she needed to pay it that day. I have no idea what form this gambling takes. It was difficult getting any information out of her. She has not told her husband ! She owes almost k3. My dilemma is do I tell her husband.
All of our communication has taken place via text. The last text I sent she has not opened.I have told her I will support her in getting through this but she must put a stop to it now. I’m worried that if I interfere I may end up falling out with both of them. I am also worried what she might do if pushed to far.

crazyH that is dreadful. Was it recently?

This sounds very like a scam that’s doing the rounds just now. Especially as you say all your communication has been by text. Please don’t give your bank details. You need to speak to your daughter and you hopefully might discover she didn’t send those texts. Her phone may have been hacked.

Yes, there was another warning in the media this week.

This scam has been doing the rounds for a while now.

just try ringing the mobile number you had for her.

I have made contact with my daughter. It was all a scam. Phew I’m so relieved. She thought it was funny and reminded me she is as careful with her money as I am !
Thanks again for your advise ladies.

It's a scam. A friend of mine had a text from her daughter asking for bank details and giving a new mobile number. She phoned her daughter on her old number. Was relieved it wasn't her daughter but angry she nearly fell for it.

So many scams making the rounds again. When anyone has tried it with me I always phone the company they are supposed to be from and report the scam.

Scam - I had a similar one on Thursday last week. Luckily I phoned my DD first.
I had a text saying she’d smashed her phone and was using a friend’s phone, could I WhatsApp her on xxxxxxxxx
‘She’ then sent a WhatsApp saying her bank account had be frozen for 48 hours and she had urgent bills to be paid that day - that’s when I phoned her. It sounded very convincing at the time ?
Beware. Blocked and reported the number.

Glad it was a scam, but a bit surprised you were so quick to believe your daughter was having money troubles with gambling, if, as she says, she is as careful with money as you are!

I also had a similar text the other night - the mistake they made was using the word ‘Mom’….my daughter would only ever call me mam!

I’d still ring her on the landline to check before doing anything anyway so it wouldn’t work on me!

A friend paid two lots of money to her ‘son’ who said he had dropped his phone in the bath and it wouldn’t work. Luckily she did get the money back.

My daughter has debts, these are left over from when she separated from her husband. She has four children and she is very unwell with chronic fatigue syndrome, therefore she cannot work. We own her house so I know that she cannot be evicted. They are not gambling related, but she isn’t very helpful when we suggest debt consolidation charities.

It’s a scam. I had one the other day. A text supposedly from daughter saying she needed to pay an invoice urgently or would face extra charges. When I spoke to my daughter she said she would never have asked me for money by text. Speak to her ASAP

bear1 Mon 18-Jul-22 11:53:52

this is a spam so do not give any details away but even if it was your daughter you should not pay her debt or give her your bank details if she is so hooked on gambling you will only be supplying her with more money she needs to take responsibility for her actions

pascal30 Mon 18-Jul-22 11:55:38

SCAM... just ring or see her

Grannygrumps1 Mon 18-Jul-22 11:57:27

Just a thought…. I had my phone stolen recently ( that’s another story and returned now). But had to contact my son when it happened. We have a code word that we use to prove it’s a genuine emergency when using a different phone. Maybe You could try doing this. Then you would spot scam’s immediately.

Grantanow Mon 18-Jul-22 11:59:05

Obvious scam. Talk with dd.

Lovetravel Mon 18-Jul-22 12:06:10

There was a warning only yesterday on Jeremy Vine lunchtime radio show detailing exactly this. You get a txt from your son or daughter saying firstly they have changed their mobile number. Then some friendly txts. Then Iv got financial problems please transfer money I need help. THIS IS A SCAM 100%
