Do you tip your hairdresser?

My hairdresser comes to the house after cutting my hair for a few years in a big salon. She changed salons but cuts mine on her days off. When she first came to the house I asked her how much she charged and I said that’s not enough and gave her £20 more and have automatically done that ever since. A couple of times I have asked if she wants more and she has said “no”. At Christmas I give her extra in a card.

My Hairdresser comes to my house and cuts and blow dries both mine and DH hair,she is here for about 2 hours and charges £45 I always round it up to £50.

I believe Mumsnet is being used to build up a profile of women's problems with the menopause so that advertising of useless products can be targeted at them.

Isn’t it just the kind of questions you might ask in a chat with friends, just out of interest in what others do? Maybe the ‘askers’ don’t have as much contact with friends as they would like.

No, I would not tip shop staff for doing their job so why tip a hairdresser?

You are asking about tipping when you don't even know if they are going to do a good job, to me tipping is if someone goes above and beyond not for those that ar doing what they are paid to do.

Yeah I think she's very cheap so I tip her a fiver every time I get my hair cut which is approx. every six weeks.

I also tip my manicurist - it’s her own business, but I just round it up, rather than wait for her to find change. So, my £24 gel nail polish costs me £25, every 6 weeks. Still a bargain compared to those big salons in shopping malls.

Yes I tip my hairdresser and young girl who washes my hair.

Yes I tip when I have a manicure, pedicure or any beauty treatment.

Yes I also tip waiting staff and taxi drivers (unless service was dreadful or their driving/cab was not up to to standard)

No…. Just me as a gran asking other grans for their view on tipping the hairdresser!

I used to tip my hairdresser, but now I pay by card, (and the price has increased), I don't tip because I don't carry much cash at all.

Simply because it’s so unfair We don’t tip bus drivers, train drivers, so why taxi drivers We don’t tip shop assistants or nurses what about the community nurse that comes and bandages you leg weekly, you wouldn’t tip her so why a beautician or hairdresser You tip the waiter but you don’t tip the washer upper or someone who chops and cuts up in the hot kitchen

I am extremely fair I don’t tip anyone and no I m not tight I give a lot of my money away but this idea of tipping some and not others just isn’t fair

I tip people who work for themselves, or work on their feet, or work out in bad weather. Anybody really, who does for me.

I have been tipping my hairdresser for 20 years so it would look odd if I stopped now. Even though the price has gone up and she no longer does pensioners’ rates since Covid I still give her extra. As I go only every 3 months for just a cut it doesn’t hurt me to give her an extra couple of pounds.

Tipping is not a thing in Australia, have never done it.

Yes I tip 10% too. Salon has less staff since Covid so stylist washes my hair too.

I think tipping is a thing of the past. For example taxi drivers now usually accept cards so it wouldn't apply. I don't think either of my AC would tip anyone.

i get a dry cut, i wash my hair everyday as i have psoriasis and only use capasal shampoo, it costs £14 and i always giver her £20, i know people will say it is too much but i don't carry money and hairdressers don't take card so it is just easier to get £20 out the atm

I have a body perm every four to five months at a cost of £75. She takes such care I give her a £5 tip. It is worth every penny as she takes such care with my fine very blonde hair.

As my hairdresser owns the salon I feel the small amount of tip I give would look a bit paltry. I give chocolates and wine for all the staff to share at Christmas.

Not since she put her price up by £5 between visits without even mentioning it. One week I went in it was £55, I went 6 weeks later and went to pay and it was £60. I always used to tip but the fact that she failed to forewarn me of the reasonably big rise griped me so I no longer tip.

I used to. But the prices have gone up so much since my new hairdresser took over the salon that I’m now paying twice what I did 3 years ago for my usual cut and blow dry. He’s good, but I now go for the principle of not tipping the salon owner!

Precisely. The Salon averages £100 a month off me, so disinclined to tip.

In the US 20% is expected so that's what I did, got used to tipping when living there but back in UK seems to not be a routine practice. However I always give the hairdresser a fiver for a cut and if I have a colour too then I give £10 as a tip. Also tip manicurist and always 20% in a restaurant unless service poor when it's either 10% or nothing.
Have never tipped very helpful and pleasant shopping delivery chaps although did once offer a Christmas tip and was told they were not allowed to take tips.

My hair cut is expensive. I don't tip my hairdresser as he is the owner of the business but I do tip the young girl who washes my hair and does a quick head massage. I think they get paid almost nothing as apprentices.

I’ve been going to my lovely hairdresser for over twenty five years…I always used to tip her, and didn’t stop even when she and another girl bought over the business and became the owners.
More recently, there are only three or four stylists and no juniors, which I like as it means my hairdresser does everything from start to finish. Since lockdown, I really don’t ever have cash in my purse, so I now buy her a little something maybe every other visit, such as a bottle of wine, at Easter or Halloween, I buy buns or a cake, most recently I gave her a bunch of flowers, which she absolutely loved. I always tip generously in restaurants etc, but found the business of tipping someone that I’ve known for so long, and visit every five/six weeks, very awkward, but I feel this is a much more pleasant way to show my appreciation of her and she seems to love getting unexpected surprises too.

I don't tip the salon owner, but do tip others who wash or whatever. At the moment I have a hairdresser who comes to my home and don't tip her but she is moving and I don't know where I'll go.
