Do you tip your hairdresser?

I do usually tip. For me, it’s the fact that a hairdresser has given a very personal service and a good stylist - and most hairdressers I’m sure - have tailored their service to the client’s needs and hair type. As long as you’re happy with the outcome, I think it’s not so much about the money as showing your appreciation.

Yes I give my Stylist a tip.
I also tip the Postman and Dustbin men (all men 🙈) …
My other half hates tipping anyone and I find that really mean !

I live in the States and it’s expected. So I do.

Here in New Zealand no one tips hair dressers, taxis etc. Restaurants are trying to encourage tipping but most people don’t. It comes from being a country where everyone is considered equal (theoretically and less equal financially now since monetarism came in). When we arrived here in the ‘70s there was a banner in the airport which said “We are a proud people and we don’t accept tips”

I'm with our NZ cousins! Unless the service is exceptionally good, of course. Some of the other Pacific nations like Vanuatu seem to be the same.

I have just been wondering about tipping hairdressers as I am returning to NI to live soon and have not been tipping hairdressers in Australia. Appreciated this thread

I never give tips, getting your hair cut is stupidly expensive for the actual time spent (I always get a dry so it takes barely 5 mins but that costs £29!)

I changed my hairdresser last year as their prices shot up. I now visit a local hairdresser who charges a much lower rate but the styling is just as good. I give a small tip when I visit and I gave a bigger one at Christmas. Hair dressers are the only people I tip because it's personal thing - and fun too

I used to make a contribution to their coffee/biscuits expenses, where a mug was placed for clients to pop a few coins into. A cup of coffee was always offered.
This was many years ago and a different hairdresser, as I moved.
However, these days I don't tip as the prices are so high already, and each time I go, the cost seems to have gone up. Last time it was £30 for a wash and wet cut, which takes at most a half hour.

I always used to tip my hairdresser and the junior who washed my hair but at my present salon when I apologised that I didn't have any cash one week I was told that very few clients tip any more. I now give them something every few times that I go but not every time. Just depends if I have any cash!

Also tip Tesco delivery drivers. They are almost always so helpful.

I generally don't tip as there is now a minimum wage. BUT I did tip the hairdresser when she did not put her prices up despite the increase in energy prices. I think deserved more money

I used to drive for a supermarket (not Tesco) and we were told we weren’t allowed to accept tips!

LynW medical staff, carers etc also give a personal service tailored to your needs, do you tip them. I hope so.

No I don’t tip. My colour cut and blow dry is very expensive but it’s my treat to myself. I have never tipped my hairdresser as I feel once you start giving a tip you feel obliged to tip every time you visit. I always buy my hairdresser a small gift at Christmas.

Simply because it’s so unfair We don’t tip bus drivers, train drivers, so why taxi drivers We don’t tip shop assistants or nurses what about the community nurse that comes and bandages you leg weekly, you wouldn’t tip her so why a beautician or hairdresser You tip the waiter but you don’t tip the washer upper or someone who chops and cuts up in the hot kitchen

I am extremely fair I don’t tip anyone and no I m not tight I give a lot of my money away but this idea of tipping some and not others just isn’t fair

Quite agree with you, BlueBelle. The whole thing is illogical.

I tip the young lady who washes my hair. I get a very good wash ,condition and head massage. Well worth it!
