The zip does work, I think, but is rather temperamental, like the one on my M&S coat.

Better than no coat at all, I still wear mine!

I’m big into giving stuff to charity, but if the zip doesn’t work, it won’t keep someone as warm as it should as poppers/press studs can fly open if the coat fits a bit too snuggly. I threw such a coat away a few months ago, because the zip was faulty and I didn’t want to give away something defective to a homeless person or a charity. I’d hung into the coat for some time, but I wasn’t able to put in a new zip myself, so I binned it, but felt really guilty doing so as I try not to throw things away, especially clothes. The majority of my stuff that I no longer wear goes to charity, but not the broken zipped coat, unfortunately.

I feel confused Anita79. Not quite sure what happened.

I don't understand your point Theewife. Sounds very noble - but really!!?? Good job we don't all think that way or there would be even more people on the streets who freeze to death. Calendargirl some one will appreciate your coat.

It's embarrassing rather than chilly.

I still like it and there's a knack to zipping it up!

Calendargirl Tue 07-Nov-23 17:35:13

That sounds the same problem as mine Callistemon.

It’s not broken, just unzips itself.

The poppers still work so it should be fine, better than being cold.

I'm wondering what is wrong with the zip?
I have an M&S padded jacket which starts opening from the bottom, annoyingly, unless one side of the zipper bottom is really firmly jammed in.

So long as it is wearable, I'm sure someone can make use of it. I have just donated a good-as-new camel coat to the Salvation Army. It has never suited me, but I hope someone else will like it.

Yes

Surrender wtd

Anita79 Tue 07-Nov-23 15:57:56

I agree, however made mistake sitting down with homeless veteran chatting. Rumours spread I was begging for money. Gave him blankets, cash, found that he was a fraud. Sat next to cash machine, people gave him notes. Probably living it up, imo I was a fool. Surrender are genuine people and will continue the way I am.

Perfectly acceptable .

Good points BlueBelle

BlueBelle Tue 07-Nov-23 15:47:27

It would be fine, even better if you could find a belt that looked ok with it in case the zip didn’t work so well
Well if we all did that theexwife they probably never get any donations
If I was homeless in this weather I wouldn’t be looking at the style the buttons or the zip or anything else I d be getting it on and wrapping it tight round me even if I used string

Theexwife Tue 07-Nov-23 15:40:08

Personally I would not, if it wasn’t good enough for me to wear then I would not expect someone else to.

Jaxjacky Tue 07-Nov-23 14:47:46

Definiely, much better than no coat.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 07-Nov-23 14:33:17

Perfectly acceptable I would think.

Juliet27 Tue 07-Nov-23 14:24:47

Sounds perfectly usable and I’m sure would be gratefully received.

Calendargirl Tue 07-Nov-23 14:18:24

Would you donate a good quality M&S Blue Harbour winter coat for the homeless if the zip doesn’t always stay fastened?

It has good press studs, so would stay fastened up, but obviously not so good without the zip also.

It’s really warm and cosy, apart from the dodgy zip.

I feel it would keep someone dry and warm as it is, but can’t sew myself and don’t feel like buying a new heavy duty zip and having to pay for it to be put in.

Thoughts welcome, even if you don’t agree.
