Anyone manage without a conventional oven

Our very old oven is no longer working efficiently so we are wondering if we could manage without an oven.
Should we buy an alternative perhaps? We no longer make traditional roast dinners although occasionally we do make pies and lasagna.
Decisions decisions confused

I almost never use my oven since fuel became so expensive.
I had a table top halogen cooker for several years which was like an old fashioned version of an air fryer. I’ve now got an air fryer. It’s great and more compact.and easier to clean. I did use my oven recently to sterilise the jars for my marmalade making. Probably could have boiled them in a large pan to sterilise.
If my oven breaks I won’t be getting a new one.

I do have a conventional oven, although I've not used it in well over 5 years.
I do have an all singing, all dancing microwave, electric pressure cooker and an oven style air fryer.
I've even covered my hob because it's been almost 3 years since I got a saucepan or frying pan out of the cupboard.
I have absolutely no problem managing without the oven or hob, so when I eventually move house and remodel the kitchen, these items won't be included.

Beloved and I don't have one. We use:-

Air fryer
2 combination microwaves
Deep fryer
Halogen oven
Slow cooker
James Martin version of a ninja
Toaster
Toastie maker

I think that's it.

I was lucky enough to be given a ninja air fryer last February and I haven’t used my range cooker since not even at Christmas.

Oven is for batch cooking and cakes . Husband obsessed with the air fryer I received as a gift. I’ve not used it , not sure i can get near it with him . I love my oven.

Oh all these gadgets , We had an air fryer a few years ago ( a freebie) , despite my husband wanting one it sat on the worktop like a big black useless pot . I put it away under the stairs . Then my DD wanted to borrow it to see if she liked it , fast forward my DH decided he would use it but my DD had given to my GS .
At least it’s getting used .
But , we have another big black one that is like a monster sitting on the side again , it’s been in hiding & come back out . It’s being used now as our oven gave up the ghost & we cannot get the part .
Just for the record I hate this big monster & will be buying a new oven very soon , I like an oven & enjoy baking & can’t wait to get this beast out of my way

EEJit , Thats certainly a lot of gadgets 😊 I wouldn’t be able to stand that .
We also have a toaster , a good mixer , blender , sandwich toaster , George Foreman , an air fryer & a Slow cooker .
They drive me crazy & most have been in the depths of the deepest cupboard for decades!

I totally agree , ours has been destined for the oven graveyard since beginning of January, when the electric circuit controls fell inside & could neither be fixed or a replacement brought. It is only ( I say ) 15Years old & for 2 years of that time the house was empty , so not in use . I despair with the fact that things break so quickly & are beyond repair.
Anyway after a few weeks of Airfryer living , which I hate as it’s one of those big old ugly ones that is also a pressure cooker. Though my DH has made some rather nice roasts using it .
We have brought a new one , not the all singing all dancing like before but from a major retailer outlet shop for under £400 double oven . I can’t wait to get baking again !!

I love my Remoska from Lakeland-had it years now. Am trying to decide between an Instapot or a Ninja as my oven kept blowing the fuse so is now just a storage site. Too expensive to repair/replace for the times I'd use it.

I havent used my oven for 3 years, since getting an airfryer.

Nuttynanna2 Tue 04-Mar-25 18:20:59

I haven't used my main oven for years. I have a combination/ microwave. It has a convection mode for roasting and baking. I cook a large turkey crown in it every Christmas. I also have an air fryer and slow cooker. Never need to turn on the large main oven.

Bonnybanko Tue 04-Mar-25 18:25:08

Oops sorry for the typos should be really and conventional

Mt61 Tue 04-Mar-25 18:42:05

When our oven packed up, I used my sharpe combination oven for a few years. Much better than the neff microwave I have now, which takes ages to heat anything through 😩

Allsorts Tue 04-Mar-25 18:55:12

Yes I could manage now on my own, in fact I do, its in my kitchen but not used.

I have an oven and grill combo. Rarely use it though. Have a combination microwave and an airfryer too. The oven would be used for roasting large amounts as it is a self cleaning rather than the combo microwave as I find that more difficult to clean. Airfryer is fine for small amounts. Would still go for an oven if I needed one.

Interesting thread. We've bought a retirement apartment with a much smaller kitchen than we have currently and I'm pondering what to leave out as and when we refit it. There won't be a lot of worktop space for appliances to stand around on.
In our house we have a double oven but I mainly just use one of them, and that's for warming plates! 🤦

BlueBelle Wed 05-Mar-25 08:17:13

Now 2 years have passed without using an oven I have a single drawer Airfryer and a microwave That’s all I need if it was a two person household I may use more
I don’t even have a toaster since mine died I do my morning toast in the Airfryer
Simple me, simple life

This thread is over a year old. I expect madwoman had solved the problem by now.

Things are moving in the oven department these days with people being more energy-conscious and air-fryers coming in the market.

When I was an an pair in France in the 70s, the lady of the house didn't use her oven at all, except as a cupboard for her cake tins. She had a.small table top oven on which she (or rather I) baked her cakes. It had a spit attachment where she would roast meat.

Contrary to popular belief, French home cooking is very plain and dull. At least in that house it was.

I have a work top combination oven which I use most of the time but I wouldn’t give up my oven.
