I am shocked that a very elderly one who lives alone has decided you only have one life and has take to drinking wine with her evening meal and what I call a liquer of an evening . She also takes medication but I don't know what . Should I be concerned ?

Are you a new poster, Pat37?
It's lovely to see so many new posters on Gransnet 🙂

We're a jolly lot on the whole. Cheers 🍷

What business is it of yours Pat37 to be concerned?

I have had a very difficult day.
I am86, my autistic GS who moved in 5 weeks ago temporarily has decided he likes living with me and wants to stay.
There is nothing permanent sorted for his education so he is at home with me all day.
My friend has told me just how wealthy she is for the 100th time this month.
My other friend who I have visited this afternoon is increasingly deaf and has misunderstood everything I have said to her plus she is always right.
Am I forgiven for a G&T before my meal, a small bottle of white wine with, and a brandy after even though it is only Wednesday ?
Don’t worry about your relative/ friend.
She is fully aware of what she is doing.

I would definitely phone social services or talk to her Dr ( if you know him/her) which I’m sure you do.
The woman is obviously on the slippery slope of becoming a lush.

Pat37 I suggest you swing by one evening with a bottle and join her.
You may enjoy it and loosen up a bit!

Oh I’m definitely a Merlot Mountie but these days it would be on a Shetland pony so I don’t have far to fall! 😂

Thst's real Champers!

henetha Wed 21-Feb-24 23:26:27

Leave her be to enjoy herself, I think.
From what I see around these days it's younger people who drink too much too often. Some, not all of course.

Kate1949 Wed 21-Feb-24 23:30:14

annsixty You are definitely forgiven. We are having a few glasses of wine. Nobody else's business.

SeaWoozle Wed 21-Feb-24 23:36:39

Good for her!

When I'm really, REALLY old I totally plan to do the same because it's nobody's business. Should I get to 80+ I'll be grateful and will care even ess what other people think. YOLO..

We all have free will. So the lady can do what the hell she wants none of anyone's business .

I think the late queen and queen mother used to enjoy a drink and they both lived to a ripe old age. I like a drink with my evening meal and why not ?

PamelaJ1 Thu 22-Feb-24 06:28:21

Here is a toast to you. I am in Aus so haven’t taken to the bottle at 6.24a.m.😂
Mum is 95 and takes a dim view of the copious amount of alcohol that 3 out of 4 of her children imbibe.
I trying to reduce my longevity so I leave some money to my children and don’t have to spend all my money on care!!

NotAGran55 Thu 22-Feb-24 06:48:15

Perhaps she is following medical advice?
A consultant neurologist recommended that I have a glass of red wine a day, along with 2 squares of dark chocolate and my usual strong coffee.

Calendargirl Thu 22-Feb-24 07:14:13

My friend’s parents ( in their 90’s) enjoyed a Baileys in their morning coffee.

The visiting district nurse tutted at this, and felt it wasn’t to be encouraged!

I ask you! If you get to be 90……

Sago Thu 22-Feb-24 08:09:18

When we opened our garden a couple of years ago a couple of ladies of around 80 came in, they ordered a couple of coffees and scones, they had a small bottle of whisky on the table when I took the drinks over they said they liked a “snifter” with their afternoon coffee.
I was delighted!

NanKate Thu 22-Feb-24 08:13:55

flappergirl you did make me laugh with your comment ‘lap dancing’ 😂

Kittylester we are both doomed, 🍷🍷cheers !

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 22-Feb-24 08:18:51

Alcohol is well known as a preservative.

Abitbarmy Thu 22-Feb-24 08:19:56

Having had our car written off this week in a car park no less, I’ve possibly exceeded my usual modest amount of alcohol. Purely medicinal to calm me as feeling quite discombobulated! We all have our needs!
