I am shocked that a very elderly one who lives alone has decided you only have one life and has take to drinking wine with her evening meal and what I call a liquer of an evening . She also takes medication but I don't know what . Should I be concerned ?

Pat37 please come back and explain/expand your concerns.

A few years ago we were talking about drinking levels and I asked my mother-in-law if she counted her units, or took any notice of the advice.
"Not at my age" she replied.
She's 96 now and still enjoys her Zinfandel 🙂

Whitewavemark2 Thu 22-Feb-24 08:40:52

I think it must be me that you are talking about - if 78 is elderly

Cheers!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 22-Feb-24 08:42:46

Mum lived to 101.

Always had a gin and tonic before her evening meal and wine with it.

She was always a very happy and contented person😄😄

aggie Thu 22-Feb-24 08:56:38

I think I’ll start drinking !

flappergirl Thu 22-Feb-24 08:57:05

Lol Primrose At your mum falling over the settee after the funeral. I would've claimed to be overcome with grief.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 22-Feb-24 08:58:47

Some people are very easily shocked! 🍷🍷🍷

Redhead56 Thu 22-Feb-24 09:02:08

Cheers 🍷🍷 she is enjoying herself and why not!

EkwaNimitee Thu 22-Feb-24 09:05:09

I suppose it depends on whether it's a glass or two or a bottle or two with the evening meal. But she sounds like a woman with the right attitude to me! Good luck to her.
btw, a doctor recently told me that a glass of red wine was good for you. Not offering it on prescription though...

As if being old wasn’t hard enough without being moralised at. When I was sixty I decided never to waste time finishing a book I didn’t like, when I was seventy the decision was to say yes to everything offered (unless driving) and at eighty never to eat cabbage again. The older we get, the more we should do what gives us pleasure, and the poster does seem very judgemental. As my dear late MiL said, the question is what am I saving myself for?

Alcohol and The Elderly

'a rip-roaring new book full of debauchery & mayhem'

a new novel by our own beloved GN author Sherry Swigger is out now.

kittylester Thu 22-Feb-24 09:30:13

I thought that book was by her sister Rose.

I hope she isn’t eating wine gums as well. Dad used to say mum got drunk on those.

Bea65 Thu 22-Feb-24 09:40:41

I would love to know what a ‘very elderly one’ is?? It’s her life and she’s at home not harming anyone 🥂

I think the late queen and queen mother used to enjoy a drink and they both lived to a ripe old age. I like a drink with my evening meal and why not ?

I remember an anecdote about the QM, some of whose domestic staff were gay men.

I don’t recall it word for word, but it was something like, ‘When are one of you old queens going to bring this old Queen her G&T?’ 😂

Pat37 please come back and explain/expand your concerns.

And let's hope they are less judgemental than the original post.

Nannylovesshopping Thu 22-Feb-24 09:48:59

Ah well, that’s me on the doomed list too😀

We have a 93 year old over the road who lives alone. One day her bin rolled down the road in high winds. My DH retrieved it for her. He said it was full of wine and gin bottles. Her daughter visits her and when I ask how her mum is, she says 'She's absolutely fine'. Good on her.

Bellanonna Thu 22-Feb-24 10:09:46

Wine with her dinner? Such debauchery.
I wonder if I’m a very elderly “one”. At 83 I’ve never thought of myself as old, let alone elderly. Off to the gym shortly and
a glass with my evening meal.
Pat37, you’re having a laugh, aren’t you?

annsixty Thu 22-Feb-24 10:16:17

My friend whom I saw yesterday is 86 like me.
Her Husband died 14 months ago.
He was very keen on fitness and diet, he watched everything they ate and particularly drank.
She invited me to watch the Coronation on TVwith her and amazed me when she produced a wine box for us to have a couple of glasses with our lunch.
She has since told me she has a glass every evening with her meal.
I know she is enjoying while feeling a “ bit naughty”

I remember that!

Let's see, what age did she reach?
Oh yes, 101.

One Consultant did at Swindon hospital; his patients were prescribed a glass of red with their evening meal.

When my father was recovering on a surgical ward many years ago he was given Guinness with his dinner. Good old days of the NHS.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 22-Feb-24 10:31:20

Is it still half term?
