Sitting here remembering my teens, probs 1971/72 have a photo somewhere, wearing white tights, platform shoes, a short dress, orange, with flowers on it and puffed sleeves. I think my make up was white eye shadow and an orange lipstick.
But those white tights!
Yuk!

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 23:46:15

Oh I really wanted pewter tights, but my mum said they were ridiculous.
As if women ever have grey legs!!

I had white tights, both plain and lacy, in the mid sixties before I progressed to American tan. I think next followed a shade called mixed pepper. I’m cringing now thinking about it. Buying a 3 pack in Littlewoods.

I remember white tights. A friend's divorced father remarried and his new wife wore white tights and shoes for their registry office wedding. I have no recollection of the dress but 'think' it may have been silver. I remember thinking she was so glamorous!

My friend's older sister (who was a 'hand' model) was doing the 'painted on' eyelashes before Twiggy made it famous, it was common amongst 'those in the know'. She attempted to show us how it was done with very mixed results!

I never wore American tan tights, always pewter grey which I loved. I wore ecru tights for years after that…fashion at the time I suppose.

I don't remember mixed pepper tights.
I must have been into a different phase by then.
Were they reddish?

Grannynannywanny Mon 20-Jan-25 00:04:03

They were a very dark tan. Sort of garam masala powder shade 😆

MissAdventure Mon 20-Jan-25 00:08:25

grin
Spicy tights.

I would rather wear white tights any day than those hideous nude coloured leggings the younger gen are wear today 😂

Doodledog Mon 20-Jan-25 00:48:46

I remember the pewter ones with white socks, too. They showed every click.

Redhead56 Mon 20-Jan-25 00:59:24

I remember the pop socks then stockings tan coloured with suspenders felt so sophisticated. Then tights came in fashion what a revelation no more suspenders. Then with my little black dress for fancy nights out very fine fish net tights very costly from GH Lee and gorgeous black patent leather stilettos.
They were nice shoes good quality not too high now I can only wear flats.

BlueBelle Mon 20-Jan-25 05:27:25

I crocheted a lovely orange (holey) set (a very mini) skirt and top The top finished just under my bra with a fringe that met the skirt I used to wear it with tall white plastic boots I ve get a photo somewhere I ll try and find it ….now that would be a laugh for you all
(I remember the fishnet tights and ones with patterns within the net) my skirts just covered my bum
That would have been late 60s I don’t remember white tights though

Ah yes, white tights which Mum thought were "a bit odd", but when I begged for yellow tights I wore her down until she caved in. To her credit, although she gave in she never criticised me openly but it's a good thing I couldn't read her mind.
This was 1969 - there were some weird sights on the street.

Dad abdicated all responsibility and simply said " it's up to your Mum". Coward!

grandMattie Mon 20-Jan-25 05:51:37

Oh yes, and the boys laughed at me saying my legs looked like candles. I was mortified!😂

JamesandJon33 Mon 20-Jan-25 06:08:24

Yes I remember them in the 60s. But I never ,ever wore them. I was an art student . Black everything was mandatory .

Bridie22 Mon 20-Jan-25 07:12:09

Lacey white tights and white stretchy patent leather up to the knee boots and mini skirts just covering my buttons, had to be careful leaning forward
Then I hit my hippie phase, maxi skirts, flowy dresses cheesecloth and loons!

I have a photo on my bedroom wall ,me and my 3 besties at school.(1971)
We all look identical in what we are wearing.
White tights( made my legs look huge)my freinds had very skinny legs.
Too compliment our outfits, we did think we looked cool smile.
We had what we used to call Doctors Handbags, anyone remember them?
Shoes with Blakeys stuck on the soles.
Clippity clop, we must have sounded like horses.
And of course the Black Crombie Coat.
Happy Dayssmile

The white tights were not very forgiving if you had plump legs, but they didn’t look attractive on most people. I never wore them. Always preferred American Tan.

Even in the height of summer you wore tights, well, you did round where I lived. Better be hot than have milk white legs. Daft really, bare legs might have got a real tan.

I had good legs but was flat chested.

Always glad I was a teenager in the time of Twiggy, mini skirts showing off my legs, my flat chest didn’t matter.

DH once said “Anything above a handful’s a waste!”

I remember that just after the white tights and shirt skirts/dresses episode we moved into midi and maxi length skirts and dresses I loved the maxi length gypsy skirts worn with Jesus sandals and no tights.

DanniRae Mon 20-Jan-25 08:12:54

I wore white, lacy tights but can't remember what with. I DO remember reeking of Blue Grass perfume........!
Funny what stays in your memory?

Cabbie21 Mon 20-Jan-25 09:20:59

I too had white tights, and grey ones. I must have been more fashionable than I remember.
The thing I loved most were my long red boots ( before my calves became too big to find long boots that fit).

Granmarderby10 Mon 20-Jan-25 09:38:04

DanniRae oooh Blue Grass my Dad bought me some on the plane back from holiday -I was about 15.
I don’t know why I chose that, I wouldn’t now, but I can actually remember the scent and be transported back to then -even the outfits I wore.

I had some white tights when I was about 12/13. I wore them proudly, with a pair of wet look sock things that you wore inside shoes to convert them into boots grin. I'm sure they were as bad as they sound, but (a) it was the early 70s, so worse was yet to come, and (b) if you can't indulge in crimes against fashion at 13, when can you?

Fortunately, no photos of these monstrosities exist.

😂

I used to wear Kiku perfume (1970) in a chubby yellow plastic bottle until my more sophisticated friend at college recommended. ‘Youth Dew’ by Estée Lauder. Dark brown liquid and ye gods it was powerful stuff! Then in 1973 I discovered ‘L’air du Temps’ which was (is) beautiful. I wore it for my wedding.

hollysteers Mon 20-Jan-25 10:14:02

White tights, clumpy shoes and a patchwork short dress which was really a nightdress from M&S. it didn’t look like a nightdress and I wore a black polo neck underneath it. (Still like a polo neck under things).
Hair in bunches. A few years ago I put my hair back in bunches, but my DD wouldn’t allow it😁

silverlining48 Mon 20-Jan-25 10:14:24

I remember white stretchy knee length boots and also white lipstick but not white tights.
