Sitting here remembering my teens, probs 1971/72 have a photo somewhere, wearing white tights, platform shoes, a short dress, orange, with flowers on it and puffed sleeves. I think my make up was white eye shadow and an orange lipstick.
But those white tights!
Yuk!

hollysteers

White tights, clumpy shoes and a patchwork short dress which was really a nightdress from M&S. it didn’t look like a nightdress and I wore a black polo neck underneath it. (Still like a polo neck under things).
Hair in bunches. A few years ago I put my hair back in bunches, but my DD wouldn’t allow it😁

I have a daughter like that, hollysteers. Thankfully DD2 is more relaxed about what her mum wears! grin

I loved all the 60s and 70s fashions. I was just the right shape - tall and very slim (I'm still tall).

I had white tights, very short skirts, at one point a bright, flowered trousers suit, leather coat, white knee length boots, Dusty Springfield eyes. Great times.

I had lace up white shiny pvc boots like these in the late sixties. They were so uncomfortable to wear but I wouldn’t admit it.

Grannycool52 Mon 20-Jan-25 10:36:26

Yep, I had the white lacy tights too!
I had the white lacy gloves in the fifties for going to Sunday School.

I remember white Lacey gloves for church.

I used my sisters perfume and her make up come to that, occasionally her clothes too, probably even her white tights. Most without her knowledge. 😳
She got her own back when she borrowed my long sheepskin coat and left it on the bus. I never got it back.

I wore the white tights, ecru and red tights as well. My boots were similar to Grannynanny but were cream suede, how impractical can you get? Really enjoyed my Biba 60s clothes.

Fashion at that time was a nightmare for me as I’ve always had fat legs and need to hide them as much as possible. I did wear blue tights at one time in later life until I realised how they showed up my varicose veins.

I couldn’t wear tights for years, at 5’ 11” they weren’t long enough in the crotch, I just kept pulling them up and ripped them in the process. So no tights or trousers 😧

Just how I remember the 70s.
Looks like you're having great fun!

Kate1949 Mon 20-Jan-25 12:22:53

It was a wedding I think MissA.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Jan-25 12:30:00

I thought of the song "brand new pair of rollerskates" when I saw you two. smile

silverlining48 Mon 20-Jan-25 12:44:10

I have always been short and never very slim but here we are in 1970

Yes, the white tights I remember well. If we couldn't afford to buy them I seem to remember boiling tan ones in bleach at a friend's house smile. I had the flat, lace up moccasins and the broderie anglais button-up dress from Chelsea Girl. My dad wouldn't let me wear the dress as he said I looked pregnant so I would get my pal to smuggle it out the house for me and I would change at her house. When the midi look came in we would wear the coloured tights (red/green/whatever).

Leelaylo Mon 20-Jan-25 12:54:10

Don't remember the tights but did have white pop socks and leather look crinkly boots

AuntieE Mon 20-Jan-25 13:38:26

I had forgotten the white and off-white tights, but yes, I wore them too in the '70s with mini-dresses with short or puff sleeves, high-heeled lace up grannie shoes, oh and my tights had floral designs all the way down the outer leg!

I was a student living away from home, so I never took any of these garments home in the holidays, as my parents would have had a fit! And as I was under 18, I would have had to change into something more "suitable".

That's the sort of 'ingenious' thing that my friends and I would have done grin I love the way teenage minds work.

Mine were black and the most comfortable pair of boots I had ever had.

Doodledog Mon 20-Jan-25 13:41:10

Lovely photos!

And your boots are very stylish, grannynannywanny. I would have been very envious of those.

dalrymple23 Mon 20-Jan-25 14:31:36

I don't think that I ever had white tights but did have some navy and dark green ones plus the ubiquitous black. Do you remember those nonsense numbers which incorporated knickers with the tights?

I was lucky enough to have a friend who worked at The Chelsea Cobbler and so I had discounted or on sale wonderful boots: the black snakeskin knee highs and the thigh high black leather! I still have them but, funnily enough, cannot get them over my fat legs!!

NonGrannyMoll Mon 20-Jan-25 14:39:33

Late 60s, I think. I had a black-&-white op art plastic mac, black patent shoes & white tights, with giant black-&-white plastic hoop earrings. For variation, I also had neon-bright stockings in various colours (lime green, shocking pink, acid yellow, etc). I used to wear a different colour on each leg, never a matching pair. Ah, the heady days of youth!

A French girl I knew was the first to wear white tights .
They were expensive .
She had very slim legs and Mediterranean skin and they looked fantastic on her .
When I finally got my white tights -they didn't look quite the same.
I wore white tights regularly for ballet ,but they were seamed and thick .
I remember getting white patent buckled shoes and a matching handbag .
I thought teamed with a purple
jumper ,skirt and tights that I looked amazing. The purples didn't quite match .
I saw my ever patient , kind and generous grandmother give a wry smile when she saw the effect .
I once heard her attempt to conceal her laughter at the long black dress that I made .
I decided on Medieval sleeves and designed them to almost meet the ground .
I'd cut the dress out without a pattern and laboured over it on an old sewing machine for three days .
I was so determined to wear it .
And teamed with another make -a long bkack cloak I went off to a party .
It was the first and last outing of my dark arts outfit .
A guy said loudly here comes Bat Woman and soon a crowd of his male friends dissolved into fits of uncontrollable laughter .

Awful things. Never gave them the time of day. Non of my friends either. Still we were country girls.
