Time to turn the heating on?

I’ve cracked and put the heating on this morning because it was 17C downstairs. I’ll just warm the place up and turn it off until this evening and have it on again for a couple of hours. I can manage if it doesn’t fall below 18C and am getting a gas stove so I’ll be able to use that instead of the CH part of the time.
What’s your breaking point?

No central heating. We've had lovely fires, cosy.

No heating here yet and still have the bedroom windows opened a crack. We’re in a new build that’s really quite a warm house.

No heating on yet but we've gone from just the duvet cover and a throw on the bed to a 4.5 tog duvet. I'm still floating around in my kaftan though, no dressing gown yet. We're in South Wales and feeling that the temperature has definitely dropped

Had mine on Wednesday as I got home soaking wet and cold. Had it on for 4 hours today as it was cold. If my limbs get cold it effects my neurological condition and heart problems.

Got mine on now, it’s raining and I feel the cold!!

I had my annual gas service and the very nice man asked me how I like my heating, I told him hot and on. He told me he’d set the automatic to come on at 18, I thanked him had no idea what he was on about but yesterday and today my heating has clicked on so my friend explained it to me and how I can turn it up if I want to. What a wonderful invention this little gadget on the wall is and why hasn’t anybody told me before. I am now warm and very happy.

I live way above sea level and it's always a few degrees colder up here than the town down below.
I tried to cope for a few days but I've had to put the heating on now. It's only 12 degrees in here without it.

My heating is on permanently, kicks in when the temperature drops below 22.5 degrees. The thermostat is situated in the study which is the smallest room but I relocate it to the lounge in the winter.

karmalady Mon 15-Sept-25 08:03:46

I set my thermostats to come on, all 5 of them, modern digital and all reading different ambient temperatures. The lounge temperature is set a bit higher and the bedroom too, a bit prior to the time I would be showering, then it goes back to normal

I like a warmer lounge and it comes on during the early hours. I have UFH all downstairs and the floor is heat sink slab and takes ages to heat up. Quick acting radiators upstairs. The excellent insulation helps

heating has not kicked in yet, I don`t think. I am keeping the hall cool and bedroom overnight at 18

I was almost tempted to light the log stove yesterday but am glad I never did. My body needs to adapt to autumn/winter and it will.

The actual temperature is not the temperature that I actually feel, not on a grey rainy day. I have a vantage vu weather device that shows the actual lounge temperature and sometimes I feel cool when I should not be cool, so I throw a shawl around my shoulders

Tempting! At the moment just wearing thicker clothes. It only seems a couple of weeks ago we were basking in sunshine. The transition to Autumn feels very sudden this year.

Mine is on low I can turn the Immersion heater off and it’s nice wake up and it’s warm.

As in previous years my firm resolution is not to turn the heating on till October, but no doubt as usual I’ll be caving in well before then (possibly even today). Once it’s on it stays on during the day, controlled by the thermostat, clicking in whenever the temperature goes below 19 degrees. Off at night though, unless it drops below 12 degrees.

In the meantime I dug out my enormous black sherpa hoodie last night. It does keep me warm, and also lends me a distinct Traitors/Star Wars vibe that gives DH a good laugh.

I gave in last night. A rug over my legs and feet didn’t help enough and I didn’t want to go to bed with cold feet. Additional bonus is that the towels were warm.

For us it is time to turn it off. Today is the first day in ages we haven’t had to use it. A pleasant 23C today. Good Spring weather.

grumppa Mon 15-Sept-25 09:34:08

Turned it on this morning.

I wore a warm winter coat for the first time yesterday. Out for a walk, and it was honestly just like November - heavy cloud, very windy, rain any minute (though it did wait until I got home.) This in outer SW London.
I usually think of September as part of summer!

I was speaking to Dsis in Cape Cod yesterday, and she’s had very weird weather, too - not nearly such a hot summer as usual, and very much lacking rain.

Grandma2002 Mon 15-Sept-25 13:55:09

I was determined not to do anything with the heating tilt end of September . I was so cold I couldn't get warm and kept dropping things because my hands were freezing. My daughter said I was silly and I should put the heating onto auto and let the thermostat control it. So I have done hands are still cold but so I'm going to do the ironing now.

AuntieE Mon 15-Sept-25 13:55:24

Here it is 16 degrees, gale force wind and lashing rain, so yes, the heating is most definately on, as both cats and I are frozen silly.

Kamj Mon 15-Sept-25 13:58:08

Used to be not till November but last year held out till December 😁

Mollygo Mon 15-Sept-25 14:03:50

14° downstairs this morning, so I put the heating on for a couple of hours.

That little gadget is the thermostat, sets the temperature. I do hope someone has explained the TIMER to you so that when you go to bed at night, the heating goes off. No (financial) sense heating the whole house while you're asleep in cosy bed.

Our timer turns the heating back on as we wake up in the morning. By the time I've taken the dog out for a wee and DH reaches the kitchen and the kettle, the heating has come back on.

Cambia Mon 15-Sept-25 14:08:48

Yep logburner lit for the last two days and heating gone on today for a couple of hours morning and evening. Hate being cold and love warm and cosy.

Grantanow Mon 15-Sept-25 14:13:19

It's on now.

Babamaman Mon 15-Sept-25 14:13:37

Nooooo extra cardigan or dressing gown, socks ! No heating on before we change the clocks!!!

SillyNanny321 Mon 15-Sept-25 14:14:36

Woke up in middle of night as usual to freezing room. So put heating to come on early morning just to warm up a bit. Happened 3 mornings so far so guess it is time for the clock to take over & just regulate the temperature as & when! Cannot get to cold or I seize up & that hurts. Roll on Spring 😂
