Time to turn the heating on?

I’ve cracked and put the heating on this morning because it was 17C downstairs. I’ll just warm the place up and turn it off until this evening and have it on again for a couple of hours. I can manage if it doesn’t fall below 18C and am getting a gas stove so I’ll be able to use that instead of the CH part of the time.
What’s your breaking point?

Had to put it on yesterday for DD2 as she’s always cold. Later, I felt a bit chilled, so it was on again for an hour, whilst I soaked in a very hot bath.

Crikey no heating on here ( well I haven’t got any central heating anyway but not put anything on till late October at earliest) 🤣 but it’s still not cold although I did put a light jacket on yesterday as it was stormy on and off

You sound hardcore BlueBelle. DD is with me at the moment so I’m using her as an excuse!

The temperature didn't rise above 11° here yesterday, so the heating was on for a couple of hours. I make no apology for it. I prefer to be warm.

Our heating is controlled by the clock and the thermostats so I never turn it on or off. I just leave it to get on with it.

Me neither Grandmabatty. When I was married my husband was always telling me it was too hot. He still walks into my house and says it’s roasting (when it’s only 19C.) My house, my rules 😊

I had one of those too LaCrepescule. No longer! Today in central Scotland it's 9° but feels colder. The heating will be on later without a doubt

kittylester Sun 14-Sept-25 08:06:27

Ours is set at 20° so comes on when the temperature goes below that.

Have a toasty day Grandmabatty. I’m a softie southerner 😊

Yes so do we, ours is a Hive controller. We can alter it using our phones we away so we don’t come back to a cold house.

You can do that on an ordinary CH controller, ours has a holiday setting where we can turn the heating off for a set number of days and it comes back on the day we return.

I really dislike being hot. I still have a very, very thin cover on my bed and always sleep with the window open unless it’s very windy. I might swap that for a summer weight quilt soon. As for the heating, that won’t go on until Oct at the earliest and then only for a couple of hours a day unless it gets very cold.

Witzend Sun 14-Sept-25 08:24:43

We haven’t succumbed yet, but I’ve been putting the electric blanket on, and wearing my sheepskin house boots! Unusual for it to be so relatively chilly at this time in September.

Sago Sun 14-Sept-25 08:31:14

No heating yet, still no duvet on the bed and windows still open.

It’s will be our first Autumn/Winter in our new home, I am expecting a huge change having gone from a draughty old Victorian house to a sleek new one with a very high energy rating!

tanith Sun 14-Sept-25 08:43:43

Nooo! It’s not cold yet I’m still using my Summer quilt with open window. When I’m cold I’ll put it on.

Jaxjacky Sun 14-Sept-25 08:58:29

Ours came on at 6:30 for an hour, different from last September.

theworriedwell Sun 14-Sept-25 10:30:52

We just leave it on and set the thermostat and timer. This morning the radiators were warm when I got up for the first time in months

Kiwiqueen123 Sun 14-Sept-25 10:34:35

Had the heating on last night for a couple of hours. Fluffy housecoat is out again too. Really cosy but definitely not fashionable.

missingmarietta Sun 14-Sept-25 10:42:39

No central heating here either. No need for any heating either last night or this morning. Still have the 4.5 tog duvet but with a throw on top now.

I'm in the South West.

LOUISA1523 Sun 14-Sept-25 10:42:40

I'm north west....log burner any time from October onwards....central heating from December to Feb ( log burner heats up kitchen and family room)

Skye17 Sun 14-Sept-25 10:57:15

No central heating yet but two duvets and a throw on the bed. The air temperature hasn't gone below 20°C in the house, but that doesn't seem to be the only thing that affects how cold I feel. When I start feeling cold in spite of several layers of clothes, I will put the heating on, set to keep the house at 20°.

RosieandherMaw Sun 14-Sept-25 11:48:53

No although I had a fire a couple of evenings last week but put that down to being post-Covid.

Put a jumper on!

Iam64 Sun 14-Sept-25 12:43:19

Mine seems to have cracked independently. It switched itself on about 11.30 am. I’m not arguing with whatever kind house fairy or technology responsible. It’s lovely to be warm

NanTheWiser Sun 14-Sept-25 12:47:00

Just turned mine on! 19° on my thermostat, and I’m feeling chilly, so I’ve succumbed. (In the South East).
