Why can't I wear this to a wedding?

I have a dilemma and would value some advice, please.
My eldest GD gets married in a few months time. Her Mum, my eldest DD, has asked me what I am wearing for the day.
Just before Covid, my cousin's GD got married and I bought a lovely 2-piece outfit. It is a coffee coloured lace skirt and matching top, both lined. It fits as if it had been made for me, is very comfortable to wear having an elasticated waistband and I like it.
When I told my DD I was planning to give this outfit a second airing, she was horrified. She says I must have something new. My argument is that 7 years ago I went to this wedding alone as it was some distance away so the family haven't seen me in it.
Should I stick to my guns and weather the inevitable fallout, especially on the day or should I surrender and cough up for a new outfit that will likely never see the light of day again?

My dad's Mum kept her coat on, with her handbag held in front of her like a shield.

Haha yes I have seen many older women relatives at weddings stood in that way, a long coat and a fiercely held handbag.😁

Interestingly, my SiL wore the same outfit to both her son and her daughters weddings, several years apart, and no one was apoplectic about it

I did exactly the same! I had bought an expensive (to me!) silk outfit and wore it once with a jacket and the second time with a cobweb bolero. Same shoes and handbag, too!

My DCs clearly weren’t bothered as they never mentioned it and I’d never even thought to clear it with them before the wedding!

Only in old photos I should add.

It sounds a lovely outfit. Wear it and have a happy day.

Am I the only one who can see that the daughter is thinking her daughter might ve upset to think she wasn't worthy of a brand new outfit. I wouldn't have even thought about releasing it. Its a big celebration for your family - surely worth splashing out on.

A bride is totally focussed on herself and HIM and their love for each other. On her wedding day she is the happiest luckiest most loved girl in the world.

She won't be pricing the guests outfits to assess her own "worth" in their eyes.

Heavens, do brides these days need to see the price tag on the wedding gifts to decide how much they like the giver?

I tend to agree with Kitty as I was virtually told this by a DC once they knew I was planning to wear the same outfit twice. Like others have said, it's not worth having a family dispute over and which could sour the happy day. However, if you do want to wear the same outfit then would it be possible to dye it a different colour?

kittylester Sat 15-Aug-26 15:52:27

butterandjam, I said the daughter, not the bride.

I really don't think it's worth a call out about.

I think the suggestion of going to a 'previously worn' shop is a good idea. I believe John Lewis do that.

Similar to Aldom, a good friend went to a 'second hand' shop for her outfit for her daughter's wedding. She looked fantastic.

If you love the outfit wear it, buy new shoes, bag and hat if you want but it is really important to feel comfortable.

If your daughter wants to take you shopping and buy an outfit then let her.

Lace is all the rage at the moment.

Maybe the moderators could remove that link, it was one of a few that I looked at regarding the popularity of lace right now. I didn't mean to post one for a business, in tall, skinny models wearing (very little) lace!!

Would some sort of compromise be to wear it and change up the "extras".
If something fits, that's a marvelous thing!

This wear it if you’re really comfortable and it’s a nice fit but jazz it up with new shoes bag earrings etc

Ziplok Sat 15-Aug-26 16:03:57

Apparently, looking on line, a lace outfit is fine to wear to a wedding, so go ahead and wear your outfit 😊.

Lathyrus3 Sat 15-Aug-26 16:18:51

It also says wear vibrant or dark tones in lace and keep the outfit short, just below the knee maximum.

You do make me chuckle at times MissA with your one liners.
😁

Crikey this a difficult one.

My first thought was ‘wear it and accessorise it differently’.

Then I thought maybe not. Feelings/emotions are involved here and they can be tricky buggers at the best of times.

Your daughter will be on high doh.
Possibly she feels you’re not making much of an effort for your granddaughter.

Not worth canvassing any one else’s opinion.

I’d just buy a new bluddy dress. Keeps the peace and you can’t put a price on tgat can you?

Gwyllt Sat 15-Aug-26 16:37:41

I would stick to you’d guns if you like it and feel good in it
Perhaps daughter would change her tune if you said something along the lines of

If you don’t want me to wear the same outfit are you going to buy me a new one and all the accessories to go with it You could go round a lot of shops and take a long time to choose

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 15-Aug-26 16:38:06

* I meant canvassing any more family members opinions.
Sorry I didn’t make that clear!

We on here just LOVE to be asked! 🤣

Please come back once you’ve made a decision and tell us won’t you? We have a vested interest in this now!

All the best whatever you decide.

Lathyrus3 Sat 15-Aug-26 17:09:57

The coffee lace outfit is obviously a problem for whatever reason

I can think of several.

stillawipp Sat 15-Aug-26 17:22:46

Gosh, I’m amazed at the number of people who are of the “do what you want even if it upsets someone else” persuasion!! Why would you risk upsetting your daughter on such a big day for her if you didn’t have to?! “Stick to your guns”, “why shouldn’t I?” “Do what you want , never mind her” don’t belong in any loving family relationship…

MissAdventure Sat 15-Aug-26 17:30:22

We should all just do as we're told, I expect.

Sometimes it’s for the best.

Especially if we’re going to be on a lot of photographs
😬🤣😱😳

Oreo Sat 15-Aug-26 17:37:13

At weddings I try to hide behind the biggest hat😁I have never got my posing face ready when the photo is taken.

MissAdventure Sat 15-Aug-26 17:40:13

I find the biggest person, amd try to stand behind them, witj just my face peeking over their shoulder.

It's fine, as long as they don't cotton on.

Smileless2012 Sat 15-Aug-26 17:40:25

The OP has a lovely outfit that she feels comfortable in and no one who will be at her GD's wedding has ever seen before.

Believing there will be the inevitable fallout if she doesn't do what her daughter wants doesn't belong in any loving family relationship either.

Lathyrus3 Sat 15-Aug-26 17:48:03

I’m concerned that it may not be the lovely outfit she thinks it is.

I bought an outfit for my sons wedding and when I put it on his face told me what I needed to know😳

I bought a different one.

Sometimes we all need a little guidance 😬

pinkwoollyjumper Sat 15-Aug-26 17:50:26

Why are women expected to buy a new outfit for every occasion when men just wear their best suit (maybe with a different shirt and tie). Will your DD expect all the male guests to buy a new suit for the occasion - I bet she won't.

MissAdventure Sat 15-Aug-26 17:51:50

I think its a slippery slope to go for the quiet life route.
I supose each family is different, so its to be taken into account when considering being "guided".
